When it comes to mushrooms, Zimbabwe is a bit of an anomaly. Worldwide, button mushrooms are the most consumed, but in Zimbabwe, oyster mushrooms take the lead due to their lower price. A punnet of oyster mushrooms sells for US$1 at Mbare and other informal markets, while in other markets like Food Lovers Greendale, prices range from US$1.20 to US$1.80. In contrast, button mushrooms are priced at US$2 per punnet in Mbare and US$4 to US$5 in supermarkets and shops like Food Lovers. The higher price of button mushrooms is attributed to Zimbabwe's less conducive growing environment, as they require lower temperatures (around 15°C), whereas oyster mushrooms can thrive in temperatures as high as 25°C.
