The government, council, and police often label Harare drivers as reckless, but a recent survey revealed something shocking: depending on the route, up to 100% of traffic lights are not working, leading to chaos and congestion. Our roads are not only riddled with potholes the size of ditches, but motorists also face misleading traffic lights.
For instance, the lights along Nelson Mandela and Angwa, as well as those at the intersection of Leopold and Robert Mugabe, only function on one side, leaving the other side completely off. Police officers (both council and ZRP) frequently stand near these malfunctioning lights, setting traps for unsuspecting drivers who can't see the other side.
The cost to fix a single traffic light starts at US$25. Authorities often delay addressing these issues until they affect large areas and require significant funding.
