We are now in the heart of winter, and the price of leafy vegetables like covo has increased slightly. Generally, a bundle of rape, covo, or tsunga sells for US$0.50. However, in supermarkets, prices have risen to US$0.55 at Pick N Pay and US$0.60 at OK. Vendors in places like Mbare are employing shrinkflation tactics, selling bundles for US$0.50 but reducing the size by removing just enough leaves to maintain profitability. Typically, leafy veggies are cheapest in March and April, just as people shift focus from maize farming, and again in October after winter. Prices peak during summer due to rains causing rotting and a focus on maize farming.
