*📍 Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam – Tamil Nadu*
*🛕 The Largest Functioning Hindu Temple in the World!*
Nestled on an island between the Kaveri and Kollidam rivers, the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam is a breathtaking blend of divinity, Dravidian architecture, and timeless history.
✨ Historical Significance
Dedicated to Lord Ranganatha (a reclining form of Lord Vishnu), this temple has been revered since ancient times. Believed to be over 1,000 years old, it finds mention in Tamil literature as early as the Sangam era. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams (sacred Vishnu temples) praised by the Alwars.
The temple was expanded and patronized by the Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, Nayaks, and later the Vijayanagara Empire. During the 14th century, the temple was invaded by Delhi Sultanate forces and later restored by devotees and rulers.
🏛 Architectural Marvel
The temple complex is spread over 156 acres, making it the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world. It has 7 concentric walls (prakaras) and 21 gopurams (gateway towers). The Rajagopuram, completed in 1987, stands 237 feet tall, and is the tallest in Asia!
Inside, you’ll find intricate carvings, pillared halls, the stunning Garbhagriha (sanctum), and the 1000-pillared hall, showcasing remarkable stone craftsmanship.
🧘♂️ Spiritual Core
The reclining deity, Lord Ranganatha, rests gracefully on the serpent Adisesha. Devotees believe that this is the first and foremost of the eight self-manifested temples of Vishnu (Swayam Vyakta Kshetras).
