🟢Dr. Henrietta Ukwu🟢
Her journey offers a powerful source of motivation for us all.
She led through two global health crises—HIV and COVID‑19—turning turbulence into triumph.
She once said, “Vision always comes first.Without knowing where you want to go, you’re never going to get anywhere.”
As students and alumni, start with a clear vision of your goals, then backtrack to identify the steps needed to get there. In challenging times, this mindset keeps you grounded and driven.
Her Courage to Step into the Unknown. Switching from academic medicine to high‐stakes pharma leadership took courage.
Dr. Ukwu embraces discomfort. Growth often lies outside your comfort zone. Be ready to pivot, whether it’s internships, novel research, entrepreneurship, or cross-border opportunities.
Prioritize Well‑Being. During the marathon COVID‑19 vaccine filings, she instituted “walk‑and‑work” meetings to sustain energy and morale.
Academic success isn’t just about hours—it’s about balance. Take breaks, recharge, and encourage others to do the same.
Leadership Through GRACE. Dr. Ukwu founded GRACE—Gratitude, Resilience, Attitude, Contribution, Excellence- as a model for sustaining balance and excellence
Excellence isn’t just talent, it’s also mindset and generosity. Cultivate gratitude, bounce back from setbacks, maintain a positive attitude, contribute meaningfully, and always strive for quality.
Communication & Mentorship. Her leadership philosophy centers on three C’s: communication, collaboration, contribution, and giving feedback generously
She invests in mentoring others. Share your insights, build collaborative networks, and help lift others. Feedback given and received is a gift.
Alumni can mentor juniors; students can seek and offer peer guidance.
Small Gestures, Big Impact. As thanks to her team, she sent coffee vouchers and celebrated milestones believing humor and appreciation build morale.
Value people. A simple “thank you,” a shout‑out, or a shared coffee can make a significant difference in team spirit and motivation.
Dr. Ukwu’s path from medical school in Nigeria to executive leadership at Novavax shows that vision, courage, care, and the habit of lifting others are powerful tools-no matter your stage or field.
