🩸 Screen It Before You Stream It — Safe Blood Saves Lives! 🩸
On this 🩸World Blood Donor Day🩸, we recognize and celebrate the heroes among us — voluntary blood donors — who offer the gift of life. A single unit of blood can save up to three lives, but only if it’s safe, screened, and infection-free.
🩸Transfusion-Transmitted Infections (TTIs) refer to infections that can be passed from a blood donor to a recipient through the transfusion of contaminated blood or blood components. These infections can have serious or even fatal consequences, especially in patients who are already immunocompromised, critically ill, or undergoing major surgeries.
🩸TTI screening ensures that blood is free from infections that can be passed to recipients through transfusion. Common TTIs include:
📌 HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
📌 Hepatitis B (HBV) and Hepatitis C (HCV)
📌 Syphilis
📌 Malaria (in endemic areas)
✅ Key Reasons to Screen Blood for TTIs:
🛡 Protects patients' lives, especially those who are immunocompromised
🌍 Prevents the spread of infectious diseases across communities
🏥 Maintains the safety and credibility of the national blood supply
📋 Fulfills ethical, legal, and WHO guidelines on safe transfusion
🔍 Detects asymptomatic carriers, protecting both donor and recipient
🔄 What Makes Blood Truly Life-Saving?
🩸It's not just the act of donating — it's ensuring that the blood is tested, safe, and responsibly collected.
🩸Let us thank every voluntary blood donor who gives selflessly, and also emphasize the importance of rigorous TTI screening to ensure that each donation is safe and effective.
