Mbhashe Local Municipality Hands Over Access Road in Riverview, Ward 13 – Elliotdale
Today, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Samkelo Janda, accompanied by the Portfolio Head for the Budget and Treasury Office, Cllr Nombongo Apleni, ward councillor, municipal officials, and the contractor, officially handed over a newly constructed access road in Riverview, under Ncihane West, situated in Ward 13 of Elliotdale. This much-anticipated infrastructure project marks a significant milestone in the municipality’s ongoing efforts to improve rural connectivity and access to essential services.
The 4.1-kilometre road, built to a width of 3 metres, comes as a response to the long-standing transportation challenges faced by the Riverview community. The project not only enhances local mobility but also promotes socio-economic development by easing the movement of people, goods, and services in and out of the area.
Scope of Work
The construction project was comprehensive, reflecting a commitment to quality and sustainability. Key elements of the work included:
General Site Establishment: The site was thoroughly prepared through clearing, grubbing, and setting up infrastructure for construction operations.
• Bulk Earthworks.
• Roadbed Preparation
• Wearing Course
• Stormwater Drainage
• Ancillary Works
• Landscaping and Environmental Controls
Road signs were also installed as part of the project to improve safety and navigation. In addition, training was provided to the individuals employed during the construction phase, empowering them with valuable skills and experience; as a result, they also received accredited certificates. Approximately 12 people were employed throughout the project, contributing to local job creation and community development.
This new access road is set to significantly benefit the people of Riverview, Langeni and the surrounding areas. Improved road access will assist learners travelling to schools, patients reaching health facilities, farmers transporting produce, and residents accessing local and regional markets.
During the official handover ceremony, Executive Mayor, Cllr Samkelo Janda, delivered a heartfelt keynote address, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the project's success.
"We deeply appreciate the commitment and cooperation of all stakeholders involved, the contractors, community members, and especially the leadership of Ward 13. This project is a clear example of what we can achieve when we work together for the betterment of our communities."
He added that this project forms part of the municipality's broader infrastructure development programme aimed at improving the quality of life for residents, especially in rural areas.
The successful completion and handover of the Riverview access road reaffirm the municipality’s dedication to delivering service delivery projects that are impactful, sustainable, and community-driven.
Community members expressed their joy and appreciation for the new road. Mr Simon Worhani, a resident of Riverview, shared his thoughts.
"We are very thankful to the municipality. Before this road, we had nothing — just a path full of rocks and mud. This new road will make a huge difference in our daily lives as services will be able to reach us."
