โAll the countries around us do not share our ideology. For us to be secure, let us fence our borders.โ
~ General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff
This isnโt just a statement, itโs a strategic reality check.
With over 4,000 km of porous land borders, Nigeria shares boundaries with Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and Benin, countries facing their own security, ideological, and governance challenges. These unguarded entry points have become gateways for:
๐ด Arms smuggling
๐ด Cross-border terrorism (e.g., ISWAP, Boko Haram routes)
๐ด Human trafficking and drug trade
๐ด Illegal migration
๐ด Cattle rustling and banditry
In 2023 alone, intelligence reports revealed that a large number of weapons used by terrorists entered Nigeria through unguarded bush paths and unpatrolled zones.
๐Fencing the borders isn't about isolation โ it's about insulation.
We must protect our sovereignty, control who comes in and out, and align our national security architecture with global best practices.
Even countries like Kenya, India, Morocco, and Israel have implemented border fences to limit infiltration and protect national interests.
Yes, itโs a huge project.
Yes, it demands political will and collaboration.
But if Nigeria is to thrive, then securing our borders must be non-negotiable.
The call has been made. Now, will the leadership act?
