Context: June 12 is celebrated as World Day against child labour. SDG 8.7 calls for global community to take efforts to check the child labour.Today globally there are 160 million child labour largely from Africa, Asia and Pacific region. In India also as per census 2011 around 43 lakh child in the age group of 5-18 are engaged as child labour. The government has made law and introduced many scheme like PENCIL, policy like National child policy which focuses on prevention, promotion and protection of child. But the VELPU Model has been lauded today because of community intervention in bringing down child labour to zero after s sustained effort of last 25 years. In this model, village sarpanch, money lenders, officials contributed and ensured education for all the children. Only People's movement can tackle people's problem.
