Blue Wave Aquaculture, a startup led by two brothers, is all set to build Indiaโs first full-scale land-based trout farm using Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technology in Kolkata, West Bengal.
Co-founder Vatsal Agarwal recently presented the bold project at the RAStech 2025 conference in San Diego, USA, aiming to attract international investors. Blue Wave is offering 16% stake in the company in exchange for $1 million (โน8.3 crore) to complete the initial build.
Why This Matters:
Target Production: 100 metric tons of rainbow trout in phase 1
Expansion Goal: Scale up to 400 metric tons
Market Opportunity: India faces a 2,700-ton trout supply gap due to disease and climate challenges
USP: Fresher, local supply with advanced RAS tech
The project aims to solve India's trout shortage and become a model farm for the countryโs land-based aquaculture sector. It will also help cut down trout imports and boost India's self-reliance in premium fish production.
Whatโs RAS?
RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System) is an eco-friendly method of farming fish indoors, reusing water with minimal waste โ perfect for urban, climate-sensitive farming.
The startup is now seeking visionary backers who believe in sustainable fish farming and the future of aquaculture in India.
