*Protecting Our Communities — The Horsefly Regional Emergency Spillway Project Update* The Horsefly Regional Emergency Spillway is one of the most significant flood mitigation projects ever constructed in southern Alberta — and the MD of Taber is proud to be a key partner in keeping our community safe. Led by the Southern Regional Stormwater Drainage Committee (SRSDC), this project brings together municipalities, irrigation districts, and provincial and federal partners to manage growing flood risks and protect homes, agricultural land, businesses, and critical infrastructure. As our landscape evolves and heavy rain or snowmelt becomes more frequent, safely diverting excess water is more important than ever. The Horsefly Spillway is designed to do just that — acting as a pressure release by sending excess water from the SMRID main canal directly into the Oldman River. This helps ease pressure and reduce flooding across the region. ✅ Phase 1 (Taber Lake to Oldman River) — Complete ✅ Phase 3 (SMRID Main Canal to Horsefly Lake) — Complete ➡ Phase 2A (Red Trail Crossing to Taber Lake) — Currently preparing for tender This project is funded by federal, provincial, and municipal contributions, including the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund and the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program by Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada, the Alberta Community Resilience Program by YourAlberta (Government of Alberta), and financial support from participating municipalities. The SRSDC is also developing a collaborative governance framework to help us respond together to future flood events and protect our agricultural community. This project is a powerful investment in our future — strengthening resiliency and securing the safety, prosperity, and way of life for everyone in the MD of Taber.
