A Harare man whose pitbulls mauled a passerby to death will spend more time behind bars after a magistrate postponed his bail ruling to Friday.
Mike Mupinga (40), of Bluffhill, appeared before Harare magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa on Monday facing a charge of culpable homicide.
He was not asked to plead.
The State, led by prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi, is opposing bail. Chonzi told the court she would file her submissions by end of day Wednesday, with Mupinga’s lawyer, Steven Chikotora, expected to respond Thursday.
According to prosecutors, on the night of May 31, Mupinga left four unrestrained dogs — three pit bulls and a Rottweiler — roaming in his yard, which is only enclosed by a low brick wall.
He then allegedly retired to his bedroom, unaware of the tragedy about to unfold.
The dogs reportedly scaled the wall and attacked Samuel Machara, a passerby walking along a nearby street.
Chonzi said the animals viciously mauled Machara, leaving him with severe neck wounds, as well as deep gashes on his limbs and torso.
He succumbed to the injuries on the scene.
“The accused person’s vicious dogs then scaled over the short perimeter wall and met the now deceased Samuel Machara,” said Chonzi.
“They bit him all over the body.”
The court heard that Mupinga’s white pit bull was found with bloodstains on its coat.
All four dogs were retrieved from the property by police and the SPCA, and were later euthanised.
According to NewZimbabwe, both witnesses and the accused positively identified the dogs.
Mupinga will remain in custody until the court delivers a ruling on his bail application this Friday.
