The Feast of Mary Help of Christians was instituted by Pope Pius VII in 1815 in thanksgiving for his miraculous release from captivity. This feast gained widespread popularity due to the strong devotion of St. John Bosco, founder of the Salesians, to the Virgin Mary under this title. The Salesians have since spread this devotion through their missionary work, educational institutions, and charitable establishments around the world.
