*Ethiopia was never colonized: What does that mean?*
-The world over, Africa is known as Poor People's Land. That perception must change, against exploitation, against non empowerment of Youths, against non mandatory education, and all for the African people, on the African soil-
While both colonization and occupation, involve invasion and subsequent control by the invading foreign power. The nature, intent, and duration of that control, differs significantly between the two. For instance, when Britain through Rhode's settlement, Rhodesia, exploited Zimbabwean natural resources (including the people), with that also imposed their British culture, language, and governance. The long term goal for Britain was to fully integrate Zimbabwe and its people, into the British Empire, or System i.e. today's Saint Helena, Bermuda, and other British Overseas Territories.
Meanwhile in Ethiopia's case, Ethiopian forces led by Emperor Menelik II, at the Battle of Adwa in 1896, defeated the Italians with their attempt at Colonial conquest over Ethiopia. It was later in the years, during world war 2, when Italy led by Benito Mussolini, occupied not colonized Ethiopia, from 1936 to 1941, and too was as a result of that conflict. The assertion behind this essay is; *The world is currently integrated into a Western-centric global system [Neo-colonized]. China, Russia, now Burkina Faso and others that reject it, are labelled "Global Pariahs"*
*Reflection*
So with the cases of Rhodesia and Ethiopia(1936-1941), colonization and occupation are clearly defined. Although in that Ethiopian case, Italy had colonial ambitions with Ethiopia, the characteristics of their invasion, were however consistent with those of occupation. Italy failed to impose even such as an administration and infrastructure, also relied on maintained military presence, during an active broader conflict, both in Ethiopia and the World.
Also the occupation worked as part of an immediate broader East African flank war plan, further highlighting those occupation characteristics of World war 2's Italian invasion of Ethiopia. Also marked its end with the 1941 regression of Axis powers, in particular Italy in the then ongoing global conflict. However the assertion here being explored suggests a global form of colonial conquest, that is less fixated on individual nations or territories, however the world as a unit, under the atonement to a global system, beneficial only to the interests of an Individual block of nations.
Ominously called... THE WEST, Western hemisphere nations, of Western Europe, and North America, have dominated Global Politics, through transnational Monetary and Governance Policy Institutions i.e. the UN, IMF, World Bank, Regional Institutions, etcetera. This dominance has led to greater development competitive advantage for these nations, through advantageous global monetary and governance policies, which have been enforced the world over through the barrel of a gun i.e. Libya (2011), and the ongoing pressure on the Sahel Tri-alliance of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, to conform or face eventual DIRECT military action, instead of the current regime change efforts, using clandestine and indirect hostile engagement.
*Compounding Reflection*
Let's talk BRICS, and what exactly the block can offer at this moment in time, in terms of an alternative to the existing global economic governance structures. Firstly, what is BRICS? It is said to be an amalgamation of emerging national economies, fostering bilateral trade and development ties among each other, for an increased multipolar global economic balance.
BRICS can in my view offer a less politically polarized global economic structure. Socio-cultural diversity across Africa, has long told for a need to tolerate one other, for continued mutual engagement, let alone economic mutual engagement. We all know how that has panned out, especially mixed with foreign interference from that Western-centric global order (Western influenced transnational Institutions and their policies).
On the global stage side of things, that diversity, is a billion times more, and so are the same challenges faced by African efforts towards continental integration and mutual engagement. Take for example, the African case of the Sahel Tri-alliance having faced being ostracized by ECOWAS, a regional block which was intended for regional integration and mutual engagement. They however instead during that period of uncertainty for the newly self redefined nations of the Sahel 3, became an extension of French and Western outcry, and frustration over their interests in that region being curtailed.
*Conclusion*
So in a way, from the context of Neocolonialism, Ethiopia has along with the rest of the world atoned eventually. Because Neocolonialism through Socio-economic means, has the world over achieved for the West, Socio-political and Socio-cultural superiority. People are leaving their countries for greener pastures in the West, learning English, French, German, Polish, etcetera, to integrate themselves into Western nations, for better opportunities.
Platforms owned and managed by Western conglomerates like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more of the majority of Social media, have pushed more Western-centric pop-culture, opinions, and beauty standards; further integrating youths and adults alike, the world over, into Western Socio-political and Socio-cultural norms.
Now, as young Africans we are growing out of such an environment, and with very little competitive alternatives, to feed our youthful hunger for stimulating experiences, or content. We have plenty of creatives, we have plenty of stories, are we wrong to call for more funding and resourcing based empowerment? I mean we would secure the African socio-political and Socio-cultural future...
