Murder case dropped 10 years later: Post-mortem revealed suicide— case linked to cold case murder Criminal proceedings against a Cumuto woman and her father, who were charged with the 2014 murder of his common-law wife, have formally ended. Shastri Jagroo, 25, was released from prison on June 18 after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) filed a notice of discontinuance. Her father, 58-year-old Sewak Jagroo, died in prison on January 1 while awaiting trial. The two were charged in August 2023 with the murder of 54-year-old Esther Williams, who was initially believed to have died by suicide at her Cumuto home in April 2014. However, a post-mortem revealed she died from ligature strangulation and blunt force trauma. The case remained unsolved for years until it was reopened by the Cold Case Unit, led by acting ASP Sean Dhillpaul. Charges were laid in 2023 following legal advice from the DPP. Shastri was a university student at the time.— Story via Jada Loutoo, Newsday
