At the end of surah al-Furqan [25], Allah described the believers by saying: [وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَشْهَدُونَ الزُّورَ وَإِذَا مَرُّوا بِاللَّغْوِ مَرُّوا كِرَامًا] _And they are those who do not witness falsehood and if they pass by foul speech, they pass by it in a noble way_. [72] In one of his works, ibn al-Qayyim wrote: [وتأمل كيف قال سبحانه : { لا يشهدون الزور } ولم يقل بالزور لأن يشهدون بمعنى يحضرون فمدحهم على ترك حضور مجالس الزور فكيف بالتكلم به , وفعله ؟!] Reflect on how Allah said, "They do not witness falsehood," rather than saying, "They do not give false witness," because the meaning of *yashhadun* - "witness" - here is: to be present for it. Allah is praising them for not being present in gatherings of falsehood, so then what about speaking falsehood or committing falsehood?!
