Marking World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15 June 2025, the Department of Social Development hosted a community engagement in Fort Beaufort, Eastern Cape, with Minister Nokuzola Sisisi Tolashe leading the proceedings, joined by Eastern Cape MEC for Social Development, Ms Bukiwe Fanta. The engagement brought together traditional leaders, civil society organisations, and community stakeholders, spotlighting the rights and wellbeing of older persons.
Welcoming approximately 400 older persons who braved the early winter chill, the engagement created a platform for them to voice their concerns directly to the Minister, with many expressing that it was their opportunity to speak up and be heard.
Ms Siza Magangoe, Deputy Director-General for Welfare Services, highlighted the significance of protecting older persons as a national priority. Stressing the Department’s mandate under the Older Persons Act, she outlined how the Department was providing services through community-based care, support for residential facilities, and the strengthening of protective legislation.
“Recognising elder abuse as a hidden pandemic happening behind closed doors, we are calling for urgent action—strengthening prevention, empowering families, and protecting our elders from harm and neglect,” said Ms Magangoe.
Underscoring the central role of families, she noted that care must begin at home. “Promoting strong family systems is essential to protecting older persons. That’s why we are revising the White Paper on Families—aiming to strengthen intergenerational care, build healthier relationships, and instil a culture of dignity and respect,” she added.
