Iran: Iran airspace remains closed due to hostilities with Israel. U.S. citizens seeking to depart Iran should depart by land to Azerbaijan, Armenia, or Türkiye if they deem conditions are safe/if they can do so safely. U.S. citizens should enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at http://STEP.state.gov to receive the latest updates on security in Iran. If You Plan to Leave Iran: The Department has opened a crisis intake form for U.S. citizens in Iran to pass information about consular assistance. However, because of the limitations on consular support in Iran, we do not anticipate offering direct U.S. government assisted departure from Iran. U.S. citizens seeking departure should take advantage of existing means to leave Iran. Please read instructions on the crisis intake form carefully at: https://mytravel.state.gov/s/crisis-intake U.S.-Iranian dual nationals must exit Iran on Iranian passports and should be prepared to encounter checkpoints and questioning from Iranian authorities before departing Iran. The Iranian government does not recognize dual nationality and will treat U.S.-Iranian dual nationals solely as Iranian citizens. U.S. nationals are at significant risk of questioning, arrest, and detention in Iran. Showing a U.S. passport or demonstrating connections to the United States can be reason enough for Iranian authorities to detain someone. U.S. passports may be confiscated in Iran. U.S.-Iranian dual nationals should consider obtaining, in their Iranian passports, the necessary visas for the countries they will transit on their return trip to the United States so that if that happens, they may depart Iran using their Iranian passports. These individuals can then apply for new U.S. passports in the country they are transiting. U.S. citizens residing in Iran on permanent resident visas must obtain an exit permit when departing Iran, regardless of the period of stay. All Iranian passport holders are required to pay an exit tax. More at https://daftar.org/fa Depart Iran by land via the Armenian border: As of Friday, June 20, the land border with Armenia (Agarak) is open. Depart Iran by land via the Turkish borders: Türkiye’s Kapikoy and Esendere land border crossings are open. Due to capacity limitations, avoid the Gürbulak land border crossing. Dual nationals who plan to enter Türkiye on Iranian or Turkish passports do not require advance approval. Türkiye now requires that the U.S. Embassy in Ankara request an entry permit for U.S. citizens who plan to use U.S. passports to enter Türkiye via land border. U.S. citizens who plan to enter Türkiye using their U.S. passports and those who lack a valid travel document should send personal details to [email protected]. Depart Iran by land via the Azerbaijan border: Azerbaijan’s land borders remain closed, but U.S. citizens may be able to enter Azerbaijan at the Astara border crossing with special authorization. U.S. citizens need approval from the Government of Azerbaijan before going to the border. Request entry at [email protected]. Turkmenistan border: To date, no U.S. citizens have received approval from the Government of Turkmenistan to cross into Turkmenistan. The Swiss Protecting Power office in Tehran is closed until further notice and cannot assist U.S. citizens in Iran at this time.
