Story of Miriam
Early Life and Bravery
Miriam was the sister of Moses and Aaron. When Moses was born, Pharaoh had decreed that all Hebrew male infants be thrown into the Nile River. To save her brother, Miriam's mother placed Moses in a basket and set him afloat on the river. Miriam watched over him from a distance until Pharaoh's daughter discovered him and adopted him as her own. Miriam then suggested that her mother act as a nurse for Moses, ensuring his care and well-being (Exodus 2:1-10).
Leadership and Worship
Later, after the Israelites escaped from slavery in Egypt and crossed the Red Sea, Miriam played a key role in celebrating their deliverance. She took a tambourine and led the women in dance and song, praising God for their salvation (Exodus 15:20-21).
Challenge and Consequence
However, Miriam's story also includes a moment of challenge to Moses' leadership. Along with Aaron, she questioned Moses' authority and his marriage to an Ethiopian woman. God was displeased with their criticism and punished Miriam with leprosy. Moses interceded for her, and God healed her after she was isolated outside the camp for seven days (Numbers 12:1-15).
Miriam's story highlights her bravery, leadership, and faith, as well as the importance of respecting God's appointed leaders and dealing with the consequences of one's actions.
