Maariv quoted Israeli Magen David Adom (MDA) ambulance service spokesman Zaki Heller as saying that shelters may not withstand rocket strikes when buildings are hit directly. He added that emergency and rescue teams are inspecting each apartment individually after the attacks to ensure that there are no casualties.
On the third day of Iran’s retaliation to the Israeli aggression, Home Front Command data revealed serious gaps in Israel’s rocket defense readiness. Around 40% of residents in major cities don’t have access to shelters that meet safety standards, leaving many to seek cover in underground parking lots.
The Israeli Knesset Research and Information Center estimates that there are around 12,000 shelters across the country, but more than half of them are not fit for use in emergencies.
The Iranian missile attacks have killed 19 people since Israel launched its assault on Iran last Friday.
