The Paris Court of Appeal reviewed today a request for the release of Lebanese activist Georges Abdallah and set July 17 as the date for issuing its ruling. Upon leaving the courtroom, his lawyer Jean-Louis Chalanset stated: “I told the judges, either release him or sentence him to death.”
Last February, the French judiciary agreed to release Abdallah and deport him to Lebanon immediately, but the national anti-terror prosecutor's office appealed the decision. Abdallah was asked to compensate the civil parties affected by the acts he was accused of, which he has denied throughout his imprisonment.
Georges Abdallah is the longest-held prisoner in France. He was arrested in 1984 and accused of participating in the assassinations of American and Israeli diplomats after founding the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions in support of the Palestinian cause.
