He was the first student whom the Trump administration jailed as part of its campaign to deport non-American students taking part in anti-genocide protests. The campaign, which considered Khalil “a threat to national security” and ignored the fact that he held a green card, has now failed after a US judge ruled that Khalil did not pose such a threat and that detaining him based on the political interests of the State Department was unlawful. Khalil was kidnapped by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from under his home on March 8, in front of his pregnant wife, who later gave birth while he was behind bars. Before his arrest, Khalil had sent a letter to Columbia University, where he was a student, asking for protection after receiving threats, but the university ignored the matter.
