Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care has officially partnered with the Chinese government to open a Chinese Traditional Medicine Hospital at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, in a move aimed at diversifying healthcare approaches and strengthening bilateral ties.
Health and Child Care Minister Dr. Douglas Mombeshora announced in Parliament on Wednesday, noting that the facility is already offering treatment using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which he said is yielding promising results.
“The Chinese Traditional Medicine Hospital at Parirenyatwa is already operational and providing care to patients. We are seeing positive outcomes in those who have undergone treatment using methods such as acupuncture, herbal therapy, and therapeutic massage,” Dr. Mombeshora said.
The facility, staffed by a team of Chinese medical professionals currently stationed in Zimbabwe, is part of a broader China-Zimbabwe health cooperation agreement.
According to Dr. Mombeshora, the partnership is not only enhancing treatment options but also opening avenues for Zimbabwe to integrate and develop its traditional medicine sector.
“With this collaboration, we also expect the Chinese to assist us in promoting our indigenous traditional medicine. The aim is to ensure it is researched, regulated, and used correctly for the benefit of our people,” he added.
The team of Chinese doctors working at Parirenyatwa includes specialists in internal medicine, acupuncture, and rehabilitation therapies, all trained in traditional medicine disciplines. They have brought with them a wide array of herbal remedies and techniques that are being adapted to treat chronic conditions such as arthritis, migraines, and digestive disorders, among others.
Zimbabwe and China have a long-standing diplomatic and economic relationship, which has in recent years expanded into health cooperation.
This partnership has included medical donations, infrastructure development, and personnel exchanges.
In the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, China supplied vaccines and personal protective equipment to Zimbabwe and continues to play a supportive role in the country's health sector.
The integration of traditional medicine into Zimbabwe’s public healthcare system is a significant step for the country, which has a rich but underutilised heritage of indigenous healing practices. National
The Ministry of Health is expected to initiate consultations with local traditional healers and herbalists as it looks to standardise and expand the use of natural therapies under professional oversight.
