In an important step towards improving Zimbabwean infrastructure, TelOne was approved by Cabinet as a proposal to implement a Homegrown Smart Traffic Management System funded by Mutapa (a local funding entity). Efforts towards traffic congestion reduction and better road safety will also be funded under this initiative.
Nick Mangwana, Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, shared the announcement via social media platforms such as Twitter. He stressed the significance of local expertise and resources being leveraged, further noting how this project represents not just technological advancements but an opportunity to share knowledge transfer and skills development essential for national advancement.
Zimbabwe will introduce an advanced traffic management system using advanced technology to monitor and regulate traffic flows, providing real-time updates and alerts to drivers. This move marks a vital part of Zimbabwe's wider plan to incorporate modern technological solutions in key sectors like transport.
"Embarking upon local expertise builds national pride while making certain the technology used fits Zimbabwe's specific requirements," Mangwana stated. The system's implementation will also create employment opportunities and strengthen local tech industries.
As this project moves forward, expectations are high that it will reduce traffic-related challenges, improve road safety and aid more effective city planning across Zimbabwe's urban centres.
