A modest sign read “Relax & Rejuvenate Spa.” But what lay behind those gates was far from relaxation. It was a sex ring disguised as a massage parlour, where under-age girls were lured, pampered, perfumed, and pimped out to Zimbabwe’s moneyed elite. The woman at the centre of the scandal has since appeared in court and been convicted of running an unlicensed brothel. But the ripple effect of her high-end deception is shaking cities from Harare to Bulawayo and beyond, where the same operations are spreading like a seductive virus. B-Metro went undercover and also spoke to several girls trapped in this system, who painted a steamy, disturbing picture of life behind the scented candles and baby oil. “I was broke at university. No rent, no food. A friend said I could make good money just for massages organised by a ‘Madam’. She would just need US$10 per client that I serviced and the rest, no matter how much it would be, was mine,” said Zanele, a former UZ student now fully entrenched in the game. “I was scared out of my wits when this bulky guy started touching me during my first massage session. My friend whispered ‘relax, this is part of it.’ He offered US$100 to have sex with both of us. We did it. I couldn’t believe I’d just made more money in an hour than I had in a whole semester.” Zanele now works solo and says business is booming. “I don’t need to beg my parents anymore. I just bath, smell good, and smile.” Shekinah (23) says she was recruited in Bulawayo by a woman promising “safe high-end sex work” in Harare. “She told me Harare men love Ndebele girls, especially if they are educated. So, they taught me how to lie. I became a fake Media Studies graduate from MSU. I even memorised names of lecturers to sound convincing,” she laughed bitterly. “These guys are rich but semi-illiterate. For some reason, they feel good if they think they’re having sex with a grad, as long as you act classy and sound clever.” Shekinah now lives in Waterfalls, where her madam houses six girls at a time. Her cut? Between US$30 and US$60 per session, plus tips. “On a good day, I can walk away with a hundred bucks. I pay school fees for my two kids in Bulawayo. That’s the reality.” Shorai, another girl in the network, explained how names and identities change depending on the city. “Shona names work better in Bulawayo. Ndebele names are gold in Harare. These guys have tribal fetishes. We just switch identities an accents depending on the location.” Not all stories are glossy. Netsai lived every girl’s Instagram dream until it crumbled. “A rich guy from Midlands fell for me. Set me up in a flat in Bulawayo. Bought me a car, clothes, even an iPhone 14,” she said. “But he was abusive. Jealous. Possessive. He’d beat me up if I talked to anyone. One day, he found me with a male friend. He beat me, threw me out, and took everything because the flat and car were registered in his name. All I have to show for the almost three years I was with him is a stunning persona on Instagram, an iPhone 14 and chronic back pain.” The game finally caught up with Cassandra Mavhura, 26, from Braeside, who was exposed in court this May. Police raided her so-called massage parlour in Hillside, Harare, where they found her and four women mid-operation. Cassandra was convicted of three offences: soliciting, profiting from prostitution, and operating without a licence. She walked away with a fine of US$130. Her employees, known by their aliases Chelsea (30), Tanya (22), Chichie, and Sky, were fined US$30 each and got suspended prison sentences from Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo. Prosecutors say they lured men to the house and charged US$20 for sex, under the pretext of massage services. In Bulawayo, another operator known only as Queen Mother is reportedly running a similar enterprise. The woman recently featured on the DJ Sparks podcast. She hand-picks girls from nightclubs and pairs them with Harare-based mbingas, rich older men with bottomless pockets. “She moves around with her girls. Airbnbs, guesthouses, even hotels,” said one source. “She knows how to stay ahead of the police. She’s already planning to set up in Mutare.” Queen Mother’s girls are chosen for their looks, skin tone, and ability to act freaky, a term used for their willingness to perform without question. Despite the flashy Instagram posts, the designer perfumes, and flirtations with fame, the truth remains haunting. “It’s a lonely, thankless job,” said Netsai. “Some clients are violent. The bouncers help, but money talks. If the guy pays enough, even the madam looks away.” Bongiwe, another girl in the loop, added a moment of comic horror. “I remember pretending to be a UZ Media Studies grad. I told a client about my favourite lecturer. Guess what? It was him. He had never seen me before in his life. He was so furious he tried to beat me up. The other girls had to hold him back.” When asked how she survived at GZU without money, another girl who is into the massage/sex business simply shrugged. “My parents only paid tuition. What did they think I was eating?” A woman who runs the massage for sex business in Bulawayo told B-Metro she was a “saviour for her girls.” “I protect them from extortion and harassment by the police. I ensure they get regular high-paying clients and operate in a safe environment. B-Metro Don’t try to scandalise a beautiful thing,” said the woman who declined to be named. Beneath the lingerie, the lies, and the money lies a darker truth. Zimbabwe’s secret sex industry isn’t just alive. It’s thriving. And for many of the girls caught in its grip, there’s no going back.
