A Harare woman, Chipo Madosi, who works for a US-based Christian humanitarian organisation, has landed in court facing serious fraud charges after allegedly duping a local miner of a whopping US$50,000 in a bogus mining equipment deal.
According to NewZimbabwe, Madosi of Brookville, Borrowdale, appeared before a Harare magistrate on Thursday to answer to allegations of criminal deception.
The complainant, Passmore Mapako of Hatfield—also a director at Neotrex Trading Mine operating in Mutoko—claims he was tricked by Madosi, who misrepresented herself as a registered agent capable of sourcing mining machinery from China.
State prosecutors told the court that in 2023, Mapako and his co-director engaged Madosi to procure an excavator and four other mining machines for their Mutoko-based operation.
After paying US$50,000 for the supposed equipment, Madosi allegedly vanished without delivering a single item.
"Complainant made several follow-ups, but the accused became evasive, prompting him to file a police report," read court documents.
Prosecutor Anesu Chirenje said the complainant suffered a total loss of US$50,000, and none of the funds have been recovered to date.
Madosi is reportedly employed by Country Disciple for Samaritan Purse, a US non-profit, adding an international dimension to the unfolding drama.
