Iran has formally criticised the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Director General Rafael Grossi for allying the nuclear energy inspectorate with Israel’s “unjust war of aggression”. The IAEA accused the Iranian nuclear programme of “non-compliance” prior to the start of the Israel-Iran conflict, and its board of governors censured Iran on the basis of those allegations, given the state’s status as a signatory of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. However, on June 18, Rossi effectively retracted his assessment from a week prior, telling France24 that the IAEA was “not in a position to say whether there is a direct effort [in Iran] towards building a nuclear weapon". Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei issued a vehement condemnation on X following Grossi’s retcomments. “Do you know how many innocent Iranians have been killed/maimed as a result of this criminal war?” he said. “Misleading narratives have dire consequences, Mr. Grossi, and demand accountability.”
