So to the great delight of their fans, Chelsea have made history again.
Chelsea supporters wanted to sing ‘we’ve won it all’ when the club qualified for the Conference League tournament last season, and now they will get to chant it in Wroclaw all night. One suspects it will ring around Stamford Bridge for much of next season too.
But this has greater significance for the here and now. This is the first piece of silverware since the Todd Boehly-Clearlake consortium took over three years ago.
Other clubs’ followers will sneer at the standard of the competition. Chelsea have rightly been installed as clear favourites from day one. But it is still a huge psychological barrier for these players to overcome.
It is also a significant moment for head coach Enzo Maresca. This could have been a bad night for him after his five changes to the starting XI backfired in the first half.
Chelsea were labelled ‘billion pound bottle jobs’ after losing the Carabao Cup final to Liverpool last year. No one can accuse them of that now.
