MUST READ! Excerpts from the Sermon delivered by Sheikh Usaamah Khayyat! A Moment of Accountability and Reflection Farewell moments stir emotions and awaken sorrow. They signal departure and hint at endings. A full year has passed, with its seasons flipped, its days gone, and its age reduced for those who remain. As the nights and days of life pass by one after the other, it serves as a warning to the heedless that each day gone is one less, and each sunset brings us closer to the end. Let the seeing eye reflect upon the message of the passing years and draw from them the lessons of contemplation and remembrance. One of the most significant lessons at the end of seasons is self-accountability. Just like a merchant reviewing his business—assessing profit and loss, analyzing causes and outcomes—the wise believer pauses to reflect on his life, questioning what has been gained or lost, and striving to correct any faults and learn from mistakes. The conscious Muslim who follows the righteous path aims for noble goals and higher aspirations. He seeks to maintain hidden good deeds rather than flaunting them. He does not settle for minor gains but pushes himself to achieve noble accomplishments and righteous deeds, seeking the highest of rewards and stations. He fulfills the meaning of Allah’s verse: “Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one’s] hope.” [Surah Al-Kahf: 46] Thus, a major concern for the wise is diligent self-reflection and sincere accountability, adopting the path of awakening and righteousness. This reflection helps prevent falls into sin, heals flaws, and corrects shortcomings. It strengthens resolve, raises ambition, purifies intent, and sets the soul on the straight path toward understanding, hope, and peace from heedlessness. Linking accountability with change leads to improvement and excellence. It clears the mind and heart from impurities. It reveals faults and shortcomings, allowing one to correct them with determination, sincerity, and a clear path. If one persists, Allah will aid and guide, fulfilling His promise: “And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.” [Surah Al-Ankabut: 69] True accountability and review is not only for individuals, but for the whole community. This nation is entrusted with a divine mission. It cannot ignore its responsibility or the farewell of a year. It must continue progressing with expanding reform, strengthening its systems, and honoring its foundations. Allah says: “O you who have believed, fear Allah and let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow—and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Aware of what you do.” [Surah Al-Hashr: 18] This moment of accountability reveals the depth of wisdom in the rational mind. It reflects one’s sincerity in seeking truth and avoiding misguidance. Each person must hold themselves accountable for every stage of life and its actions—ending each chapter with repentance, sincere intention, and righteous deeds. He submits to his Lord, entrusts Him with his life and goals, and awaits the greatest victory in this life and the next, standing on the Day of Witnesses.
