Video: Lagos government shuts down Oko Oba abattoir over hygiene violations
The Lagos State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of the Oko Oba Abattoir in Agege over what it described as persistent unhygienic practices and breaches of environmental regulations.
The move, which is part of ongoing efforts to reform the state’s meat processing and distribution systems, was confirmed by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, following an inspection of the facility.
In a statement released on Thursday, Wahab said the shutdown came in response to multiple public complaints and findings that butchers operating within the premises were failing to comply with basic hygiene and safety standards.
“Following our inspection of the abattoir, we have directed its immediate and indefinite closure due to unhygienic practices and violations of various environmental laws,” he said.
