DRC has 250 ethnic groups identified across its vast territory.
1. Luba one of the largest ethnic groups, primarily in the Kasai and Katanga regions.
2. Mongo a major group in the central Congo Basin, including subgroups like the Ekonda and Nkutu.
3. Kongo found in the west, also present in Angola and the Republic of the Congo.
4. Mangbetu known for their distinctive art and elongated head tradition, located in the northeast.
5. Azande in the northeast, near the borders with South Sudan and the Central African Republic.
6. Teke historically part of the Teke Kingdom, found in the west.
7. Yaka in the southwest, known for their vibrant masks and rituals.
8. Lunda spread across southern DRC and into Angola and Zambia.
9. Pende known for their striking masks and sculpture, located in the south-central region.
10. Tetela In the central region, with a strong oral tradition.
11. Hema and Lendu found in the Ituri region, with a complex history.
12. Mbuti and Twa (Pygmy groups) Indigenous forest-dwelling peoples of the Congo Basin.
There are many more, including the Alur, Bembe, Lega, Songye, and Zande, each with their own languages, customs, and histories.
