Their control began after defeating the Mamluks and ended when British forces captured the city during World War The Turks who lived mainly in present-day Turkey, Northern Cyprus and Azerbaijan founded the Ottoman empire, conquered, and ruled over parts of Europe, Middle East and Africa for centuries.
