What does a successful teacher-scholar do in and outside the classroom? How can one thrive as a scholar in higher education while advancing education about Asia? Why do the liberal arts matter in American undergraduate education? Why do colleges that serve primarily undergraduate populations need experts in Asian and AAPI / Asian American Studies? ASIANetwork, a consortium for undergraduate education about Asia, invites early-career faculty to join a community of peers who value being imaginatively reflective and increasingly skilled educators. The faculty development workshop will gather participants in a collaborative learning cohort to engage in structured skills development and curricular conversations, unstructured social time, personal and communal discovery, relaxation, restoration, and the opportunity to build relationships over shared meals that will sustain a healthy professional life in higher education. Through the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation, airfare, ground transportation, accommodations, and meals will be covered. ASIANetwork is grateful to Denison University for hosting this event. Led by experienced faculty members from undergraduate-serving institutions, the cohort will grapple with such questions as: How can we diversify our pedagogical tools, such as through new technology and AI, to create an innovative learning environment? What strategies can we employ to teach and advise effectively on topics outside our areas of training or research focus? How can we leverage the particular challenges and rewards of teaching and conducting research on Asia and the Asian diaspora at institutions focused primarily on undergraduate education? How can we express our agency in the classroom and in our career? How do we read and adapt to varying institutional contexts, cultures, and politics? How can we remain imaginative, creative, and, if it is important to us, spiritual in our teaching? Outcomes: To incorporate diverse pedagogical tools (i.e., technology, universal design for learning, and AI) and methods (i.e., contemplative pedagogy and trauma-informed pedagogy) into our classrooms. To learn strategies for publishing, writing grants, and building a scholarly network in different institutional contexts. To better understand our teaching lives at our home colleges and universities, and within the changing landscape of higher education. To share practices that help teacher-scholars to flourish and to care for self, family, students, and communities to which we are committed. To form a collaborative cohort of teacher-scholars who, in a generative space, can reflect on the craft of teaching and envision career development trajectories. Eligibility We invite applications from colleagues who: Hold a full-time academic position (tenure track, visiting, or renewable long-term faculty) Come from all backgrounds, disciplines, and teaching areas in which Asia or AAPI / Asian American studies play some role Have launched their careers within the last five years Application Materials Personal essay (no more than 800 words) addressing the following: What is your current position? What topics/subjects do you teach and/or plan to teach in the coming years? What do you hope to gain from the retreat? Please share a brief story about a teaching moment that you found challenging and rewarding. CV: No more than two pages.
