The Canadian Southeast Asian Studies Initiative (CSEASI) seeks applications for the Visiting Scholar position for outstanding researchers from Southeast Asia, hosted at the University of Toronto in 2025-26.
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Eligibility & Qualifications:
• A faculty member or professional researcher who has a full-time position with another employer to which they can return. Visiting professors may also include those who are on sabbatical, doing collaborative research at the university.
• A Southeast Asian scholar or practitioner based in the region. Preference may be given to scholars who have not had significant post-graduate experience in a global north institution.
• Hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field, such as history, political science, sociology, anthropology, languages and literature, fine arts, or related fields. Applicants with significant field experience will be considered in lieu of a terminal doctorate.
• While preference may be given to scholars who have received their doctorate in the last five years, the committee will also consider applications from exceptional mid-career to senior scholars who may benefit from the fellowship.
• Demonstrate experience and a strong research record in Southeast Asian Studies.
• Proficiency in English, with research knowledge of at least one Southeast Asian language

• A cover letter outlining your research interests and goals during your tenure as a Visiting Scholar.
• Contact information for two references who can speak to your academic qualifications.
• Two writing samples showcasing your research work.
• Letter of support from home institution verifying that they will be on approved leave and will be returning after their appointment as a visiting professor has ended (this is a necessary document to complete their work permit).
