Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-'Uthaymeen once said: [ حفظ القرآن عند السلف ليس بالأمر الهين كما هو عندنا الآن ، الإنسان يحفظ القرآن ولكن لا يظهر عليه أثره ، لكن عند السلف إذا حفظ الإنسان القرآن ظهر عليه أثره بالسمت والآداب والأخلاق والأعمال الصالحة. ] Memorizing the Qur'an was not a light matter for the salaf as it is with us today. A person might memorize the Qur'an but no signs of it having an impact on him. Meanwhile, among the salaf, if a person memorized the Qur'an, its impact could be seen in his refraining from speaking, his good manners, his character, and his righteous actions.
