A group of Texas lawmakers is urging Tesla to delay its planned Robotaxi launch in Austin, citing concerns about public safety and the need to align with new, stricter autonomous vehicle regulations set to take effect in September. The legislators, including several from Austin, have sent a formal letter requesting that Tesla postpone its rollout until September 1, 2025, when the state will require companies to obtain authorization before operating driverless vehicles and will have the power to revoke permits if safety is compromised. The lawmakers argue that delaying the launch would help build public trust and ensure that critical safeguards—such as detailed plans for emergency responder interaction and the ability for vehicles to achieve a “minimal risk condition” in the event of a system failure—are in place before Tesla’s Robotaxi service goes live. Tesla has not yet publicly responded to the request, and it remains unclear whether the company will adjust its scheduled June 22 launch date.
