Because I use Claude more than the other AIs, this announcement was exciting for me (Limbikani) but I'm unhappy about the whole limited preview thing for Claude Code! Anyway... *First, Sonnet 3.7* * Can switch between quick responses and extended thinking mode (visible step-by-step reasoning thing that most AI interfaces are copying from DeepSeek) * API users can control how long the model thinks (up to 128K tokens) * Same pricing as previous models ($3/million input tokens, $15/million output tokens) * Available on all Claude plans (Free, Pro, Team, Enterprise) - but I'm assuming free has the same annoying limitations ekunzi, mirira kusvika mangwana to continue 😔 * Extended thinking mode not available on free * Some improvements in coding capabilities - they are claiming it outperforms competitors but that jury is obviously still out *🧑💻 Claude Code* As indicated above, this is in limited research preview so you will have to ask to be let in (here https://docs.anthropic.com/en/docs/agents-and-tools/claude-code/overview) There's a waitlist and they are saying it's at capacity ☹️. It's a new command-line tool for agentic coding letting devs delegate engineering tasks directly from their terminal It san search/read code, edit files, write/run tests, commit/push to GitHub Anthoropic says Claude Code is already indispensable for its own developers and it has reduced development time for complex tasks there. Full announcement here: https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-3-7-sonnet *Other Updates* * GitHub integration now available on all Claude plans * Claude 3.7 Sonnet reduces unnecessary refusals by 45% compared to predecessor * Detailed system card available explaining safety evaluations

*Another Memecoin, Another Scam? Inside Argentina’s $LIBRA Disaster* https://www.techzim.co.zw/2025/02/another-memecoin-another-scam-inside-argentinas-libra-disaster/ Less than two weeks ago, we talked about the Central African Republic’s memecoin disaster, and now the news cycle has been dominated by Argentina’s own over the last few days. Here is a timeline of what happened: *Launch and Endorsement:* The $LIBRA memecoin launched on the Solana blockchain on February 14, 2025. It gained rapid attention after Argentine President Javier Milei promoted it on social media, suggesting it was a private initiative to bolster Argentina’s economy by funding small businesses. Milei shared the token’s contract address, leading to a surge in public interest. `Stay updated. Follow Techzim on WhatsApp:` https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaS23mO84OmAI88Cwd2q *The Rapid Rise and Fall:* Following Milei’s endorsement, the memecoin’s market capitalization shot up to about $4.5 billion. However, within a few hours, the coin’s value dropped like a bag of sand, losing around 89% of its value. Naturally, people started questioning the token’s legitimacy and stability. *Allegations and Investigations:* The incident led to allegations of a potential scam and accusations that Milei had participated in it—an actual president pumping and dumping a memecoin. Opposition politicians called for Milei’s impeachment, and legal investigations were initiated to determine if there were grounds for criminal charges. There were also many questions raised about the movement of large amounts of Solana from the LIBRA liquidity pools to a few wallets. This could indicate insider manipulation or a rug pull—a scheme where developers drain funds, leaving investors with worthless tokens. *Political and Legal Fallout:* The whole fiasco raised questions about the ethical implications of influential figures promoting volatile financial products. Celebrities have done this too, and in all cases, these memecoins have dropped off a cliff. President Milei has denied personal gain and called for investigations into the incident. He also pointed out that very few of the people who lost money were Argentine. *Memecoins are stupid* It’s been a nightmare for Milei, but he should not have gotten himself into this mess. I am a huge fan of Milei and his smal government philosophy which has brought some true revolution to Argentina. He messed up here. I am also a fan of cryptocurrency and how it genuinely provides an alternative financial system that’s not controlled by the likes of Mthuli and Mushayavanhu. However, memecoins are a joke and should not be taken seriously. It all started as a joke with DOGE and remains so. Memecoins come with no promise or ambition at all. They are not trying to change the financial system, they are not introducing new technology or anything like that. They are just a wild “trust me, bro” pyramid scheme. There is absolutely no reason why one should invest in memecoins, but people still do. I think everyone believes they are cleverer than the rest, thinking they will get out before it crashes. However, there’s no transparency with memecoins, and the rug is pulled before you can pull out. You don’t want to play that game—but if E-Creator succeeded for as long as it did, it’s clear that too many people think they know when to get out, and not all do so successfully.

*Starlink Capacity Opens In Bulawayo, Towns Surrounding Harare* https://www.techzim.co.zw/2025/02/starlink-capacity-open-in-bulawayo-towns-surrounding-harare/ Starlink capacity has started opening up in previously sold out areas in Zimbabwe. Bulawayo, where some areas where sold out last year in November, has open up completely. Some towns surrounding Harare that were also sold out have started opening up too. `Stay Updated. Follow Techzim on WhatsApp:` https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaS23mO84OmAI88Cwd2q Capacity in Harare and parts of Bulawayo ran out just weeks after Starlink went live in Zimbabwe last year. In Harare, the sold out area quickly increased to cover areas more than 100km from Harare such as Chegutu and Macheke. This sold out area is reducing though. Both Chegutu and Macheke now have capacity. Other previously sold out areas such as Mvurwi also now have capacity. The congestion has mostly been blamed on informal resellers who bought several kits each to resell them locally at a profit to people that could not buy online for one reason or the other. When capacity filled up, the secondary market for Starlink kits thrived on platforms such Facebook and WhatsApp. The additional capacity is therefore good news for many. It’s not just Zimbabwe. Capacity has opening up in other countries too since mid February, such as Mozambique and Zambia. The expectation so far is that this will continue to happen and hopefully, soon, sold out will be a thing of the past.

*Coal for Now, Green for Later: Zimbabwe’s Climate Plan Submitted to the UN* https://www.techzim.co.zw/2025/02/coal-for-now-green-for-later-zimbabwes-climate-plan-submitted-to-the-un/ Being the good boys and girls that we are in Zimbabwe, we were the only African country to submit its 2035 climate plan (Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC)) on time to meet a UN deadline of February 10. You can’t help but fear the worst when there is talk of climate plans because there is significant pressure to go green, even when it hurts an economy, at least in the short term. _Techzim on WhatsApp:_ https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaS23mO84OmAI88Cwd2q However, I think I like the plan that our country submitted. It rightly played the lip service game and talked up plans to go green but also highlighted immediate concerns that will mean relying on coal and gas even more in the next few years. Zimbabwe’s climate plan, as submitted to the United Nations, tries to balance energy security with emissions reduction. Key points related to electricity generation include: - *Increased Coal Use in the Short Term:* Due to severe droughts affecting hydropower output, Zimbabwe plans to refurbish the Hwange coal power station and construct a new 720 MW coal plant to address immediate power shortages. - *Transition to Gas Power:* The plan includes shifting towards natural gas as an alternative to coal in the medium term, aiming to reduce carbon intensity while maintaining energy reliability. - *Renewable Energy Integration:* Zimbabwe intends to expand solar and wind energy projects, though progress is limited by inadequate funding and infrastructure challenges. The Kariba hydro plant, which typically provides about 40% of Zimbabwe’s electricity, is currently operating at a reduced capacity of 185 MW due to insufficient water supply. - *Emissions Reduction Target:* The country aims for a 40% per capita emissions reduction by 2035 compared to a business-as-usual scenario, with energy sector emissions expected to peak in 2026 before declining. So, yeah, the plan reflects Zimbabwe’s challenge of securing reliable electricity while gradually transitioning to cleaner energy sources, constrained by economic and funding limitations. If the global prefects want us to go green quicker, they will have to fund those efforts. We are too broke to do it ourselves for now, and so ‘in coal we trust.’ I’m willing to fight any climate activist in a boxing ring who advocates shunning coal in Zim when these blackouts are killing us.

*GPT-4.5: More Thoughtful, More Expensive, Less Hallucination-Prone* https://www.techzim.co.zw/2025/02/gpt-4-5-more-thoughtful-more-expensive-less-hallucination-prone/ You can’t even blink with these AI models. Every other day, you hear about “life-changing” new features. Most of it is exaggerated, but it’s still impressive. OpenAI and ChatGPT have the limelight today. OpenAI has unveiled GPT-4.5, its most advanced language model to date. They say it has improved emotional intelligence and conversational depth. CEO Sam Altman says GPT-4.5 is “the first model that feels like talking to a thoughtful person.” Being the salesman that he is, he says he was pleasantly surprised when he received genuinely good advice from the AI. `Stay updated. Follow Techzim on WhatsApp:` https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaS23mO84OmAI88Cwd2q *Key Features of GPT-4.5* *Enhanced Emotional Intelligence* GPT-4.5 is trained to better understand and respond to social cues. This should make the AI’s interactions feel more natural and empathetic. It allows the model to provide nuanced support, such as offering comfort during challenging times. I don’t know anyone looking for this kind of support, but it’s there now. OpenAI demonstrated how the new model handles a request to write an angry text to a friend. GPT-4.5 manages the situation better, as an example. Although, one could argue it performed worse because it strayed further from the request and tried to play the role of a responsible aide, stopping you from sending a text you might regret. Listen, if you vent to your AI, then more power to you, I guess. *Reduced Hallucinations* GPT-4.5 has a lower tendency to generate inaccurate or fabricated information across various topics. Now, this is huge. The model generates fewer inaccuracies compared to GPT-4. It has a lower hallucination rate of 37.1%, compared to GPT-4o’s 61.8%. The AI hallucination problem persists, and any update that reduces it will always be welcome. *Improved Performance* As you would expect, with an expanded dataset and improved training techniques, GPT-4.5 offers deeper contextual understanding across diverse topics. GPT-4.5 excels in tasks like writing, programming, and problem-solving, making it a versatile tool for both personal and professional applications. *Not Free for Now* However, these advancements come with increased computational demands. Altman says GPT-4.5 is a “giant, expensive model” and adds that GPU shortages have limited its immediate availability. Currently, GPT-4.5 is accessible to ChatGPT Pro subscribers and developers via the API, with plans to expand to other subscription tiers as more GPUs become available.

Now, I’ve done this kind of dance with iffy earphones but this is a new level 🤣🤣

Nigerians are serious! Found this number quite staggering! Nigeria is about 14 times the size of Zimbabwe. Based on these numbers alone, Zim has the potential for more than 1,000 tech startups? Is it a question of market size limiting our imagination of what we could build, or is it this economy doesn't encourage entrepreneurship? Or Naija are just made of different stuff!
