*Work to re-assess city’s conservation areas continues* We successfully bid for skills funding from the UK Government and Historic England to review our conservation areas. This began in January 2025. As part of phase one, the first two conservation area sites in the city centre and Kelham Island are being reviewed. Several areas are being looked at. *What an amazing surprise!* Ed Sheeran joined young aspiring musicians from TRACKS for a three-hour long street performance outside Sheffield Town Hall last night. Run by Sheffield Music School, TRACKS aims to help young people get into careers in the music industry. Ed visited Sheffield last year when he met and performed with students at Sheffield's Red Tape Studios. Sheffield is a city bursting with musical talent and it fantastic to see the global superstar recognising our young artists. Safiya is the city’s 128th Lord Mayor, and a big part of her journey has been as the founder of Reach Up Youth. *We’re improving footways and making the junction safer at Rockingham Street and West Street. And we’re making bus journeys into the city centre quicker and more direct.* We’ll start work on Saturday 24 May, replacing kerbs and paving. Then we’ll move to start improving the junction so buses can turn into Rockingham Street. Later on, we’ll add pedestrian crossings all around the junction of Rockingham Street and West Street. There will be temporary traffic lights in place, but no diversions. We expect to have work finished by the autumn. *The old Cole Brothers Department Store in Barker’s Pool is set to be transformed for this year’s Crossed Wires Podcast Festival.* The famous Grade II listed building, which originally opened in 1963, will be reimagined into a vibrant BBC Sounds hub. Over three jam-packed days, BBC Sounds is treating podcast fans to a full weekend of completely free shows, exclusively for Crossed Wires. The festival will take place in Sheffield between 4 - 6 July 2025.
