'When I asked my tour guide what he loved most about Malta, his answer caught me off guard. 'After boasting about the island’s rich history and the fact that its litany of enthralling attractions are all within an hour’s drive, he casually added: "And it’s been voted the world’s safest place for LGBTQ+ travellers."' Meaningful LGBTQ+ representation in the period genre is few and far between, but Apple TV Plus’ hit series The Buccaneers is determined to show ‘queer people have always existed.’ There has been a steady increase in how much LGBTQ+ representation we see in this genre on TV – especially when it comes to women. The lead star Josie Totah spoke to Metro about just how much this storyline means to her in a new interview. Read more 👉 https://trib.al/GgpBAIW

A far-right politician has been kicked out of the Polish parliament for destroying an exhibition about LGBTQ+ equality. Grzegorz Braun ripped down posters which had been put up in the corridors of Poland’s parliament building and stamped on them. A group of 17 European Union countries have slammed Hungary’s new law that allows the government to ban public pride events. *content warning: body image* The first time I ever got a girlfriend, I was delighted. I’d come out as bisexual when I was 18, and two years later, after only ever been on dates with women, I was in a relationship with one. Shortly afterwards, though, I started to struggle with the way I looked. It wasn’t that I didn’t feel love from my partner; more that I couldn’t stop comparing my body to hers. According to LGBTQ+ organisation The Trevor Project, queer and trans youth are disproportionately impacted by body confidence issues. Read more 👉 https://trib.al/mEqXtnX

British national treasure Sir Stephen Fry decided to finally speak out against JK Rowling’s relentless demonisation of trans people and the rampant bigotry gripping the UK. Fry, who narrated all seven of Rowling’s Harry Potter audiobooks, told a podcast how he no longer had regular dinners with his fellow author, and that her views on trans people were ‘strange’. His comments were appreciated… But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t also saddened that it took him this long to say something. Read more 👉 https://trib.al/6kbMCaT

Sharan Dhaliwal, 41, knows what growing up without LGBTQ+ Pride is like. She founded Middlesex Pride in 2019, so that no one across the former county ever has a childhood like hers. Around 200 Pride events are taking place this year, according to the Gay Pride Shop, 20 more than in 2024. But Middlesex Pride may not be one of them, as organisers are coming close to calling off the main event held in Gunnersbury Park on July 27. The reason is simple – money. Snuggling up on our bed, I held back tears of joy. After years of trying, I finally had my happy little family. My wife, Sandi, and I had spent the day playing with our newborn daughter and my heart had melted with every single giggle and gurgle. Our dog had been beside herself, excitedly wagging her tail as she sniffed our newest arrival. This moment in bed, with my wife at my side and my daughter in my arms, was one I never thought would come true. Read more 👉 https://trib.al/z4XUIwg

Mae Martin’s semi-autobiographical show, Feel Good, remains one of the greatest gifts to LGBTQ+ TV five years after its premiere. The two-season comedy starring Mae as a fictionalised version of themselves and Charlotte Ritchie as their love interest George has to be one of my favourite depictions of queerness in all of its forms. The Channel 4 show first came out to plenty of acclaim and fanfare, securing it a second season and cultivating plenty of impressed fans along the way, myself included.
