Heritage Malta and the Archdiocese of Malta have signed an MOU to restore this remarkable church and open it to the public through MUŻA – the National Community Art Museum. This agreement underscores a shared commitment to preserving and celebrating this iconic Knights-era landmark. St. Catherine of Italy stands as the only surviving Hospitaller church still attached to its original auberge—the Auberge d’Italie, now home to MUŻA. ⛵ Did you know that Phoenician, thought to have been developed by Tyrian sailors using simple written symbols to cope with different languages on their journeys, is one of the oldest verified alphabet? Etched on Malta’s Cippi is a heartfelt dedication by two Phoenician brothers, named Abd’Osir and ‘Osirshamar, to their god Melqart, in both their native language and Greek. 🇲🇹Ħmistax-il pittura tas-seklu sbatax tal-artist magħruf Malti Stefano Erardi, li juru lill-appostli, ġew trasferiti lura f’idejn Heritage Malta u l-maġġoranza ġew installati bħala parti mill-wirja permanenti fil-Palazz tal-Inkwiżitur fil-Birgu. Il-pitturi ġew trattati mit-tim ta' konservazzjoni ta' Heritage Malta. 🇬🇧Fifteen seventeenth-century paintings by renowned Maltese artist Stefano Erardi, featuring the apostles, have been transferred back to Heritage Malta and the majority installed as part of the permanent display at the Inquisitor’s Palace in Birgu. 🇬🇧🧐 Who is this enigmatic figure? 🪑For centuries, this image – known as ‘The Seated Figure’ and located in the main tomb complex at St Paul’s Catacombs – has sparked curiosity and debate. In the 1800s, Gatt Said put forth a chilling theory: he believed this was Eutichia, a martyr who perished in flames, bound to a cippus in her own bath. 🖌️ The drawing was recently revealed again, following a conservation treatment where the biofilm covering it was removed. For those who are wondering, a biofilm is a green film of microscopic plants that grow in the environment surrounding the drawing.
