Ibn Al-Mubaarak said: "I came to Sufyaan At-Thawree on the evening of the day of Arafah and he was kneeling upon his knees and his eyes were shedding tears. So I said to him: "who is in the worst condition from this gathering?” so he said: "the one who thinks that Allāh will not forgive them." [Lataa-if al-Ma'aarif p.384, trans: WrightStreet]
Sufyan ath-Thawri (رحمه اللّه) said: “Remember Allāh frequently, and, as a result, Allāh will make you less desirous of this world (and its pleasures and possessions). Remember death, and, as a result, Allāh will make your worldly affairs easier for you. Yearn for Paradise, and, as a result, Allāh will help you obey Him. Be frightened by the Hellfire, and, as a result, Allāh will make it easier for you to endure the hardships of this life.” [The Biography of Sufyān Ath-Thauri, p.176-181]
Sufyan ath-Thawree (rahimahullah) said: If certainty (about the life of hereafter) entered the heart as it should, then the hearts would fly (out of our chests), longing for al-Jannah and fearing the Hellfire! Sufyan al Thawri said: An angel entered upon Yusuf in prison. So Yusuf said to him: Oh Angel with a pleasant fragrance, how is Ya’qub? How is his sorrow? The angel said: His sorrow reached that of 70 grieving mothers. -Tafsir Al Thawri pg 145
