Fighting for animals at the highest level! Yesterday, the NSPCA uncovered the reality behind wildlife in captivity to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. Lion cubs dumped like trash, opium labs hidden behind the ruse of wildlife “farms”, and slow progress in the justice system. Chief Inspector Wolhuter, Manager of the NSPCAs' Wildlife Protection Unit, led an impassioned plea to Parliament to give captive wildlife the swift justice they have been denied for so long. "Weak penalties and excessive legislative red tape are delaying justice and enabling cruelty to persist, made worse by lenient, ‘slap-on-the-wrist’ sentences handed to offenders." None of us can afford this delay, least of all the animals. We will continue to push hard for stronger wildlife laws and faster prosecution. The NSPCA is offering a R20,000 reward for information leading to a successful conviction in relation to the killing of the Chacma baboon, affectionately known as “Raygun”, who was chased at Botleng Secondary School in Delmas, Mpumalanga, beaten, and set alight. Raygun’s body was later mutilated, with his hands, feet, head and heart cut from his body. “Prosecution, education, or both - justice for Raygun starts with you,” comments Chief Inspector Douglas Wolhuter. On the morning of 3 February 2025, our Inspectors received an anonymous complaint alleging that chickens had been left without food for at least three days, possibly even five, resulting in the birds cannibalising each other and mortalities due to starvation. Upon inquiry to the farm, which is a contract grower, no conclusive evidence was provided as to when the birds were last fed, however, it was divulged that the farm received only half of the scheduled delivery of chicken feed.
