Reporters Without Borders, an international non-profit organisation which focuses on safeguarding the right to freedom of information, ranked Zimbabwe 116 out of 180 countries surveyed and published on the Global Press Freedom Index. The best ranked country is on number 1. “Access to information has increased and self-censorship has declined. However, the media have been subjected to more persecution since President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s re-election in 2023,” says part of the report. The publication of the report coincides with the arrest and detention of Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) senior journalist Blessed Mhlanga who is accused of inciting violence through broadcasts of firebrand war veteran and nemesis to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Blessed Geza on the publication’s broadcast unit HStv. Since Mnangagwa came into power, a number of private media journalists, among them Hopewell Chinono, Garikai Mafirakureva, Wisdom Mudzungairi and many more have been arrested over politically motivated charges in Zimbabwe. The media landscape remains dominated by state-controlled media whose journalists are hardly subjected to the abuse experienced by their private media counterparts. According to the RWB, extremely harsh laws are still in effect and, when new laws have been adopted, their provisions are just as draconian as those they replaced. The amended penal code and Official Secrets Act and the new Cyber Security and Data Protection Act continue to hamstring journalism. “In June 2023, the government adopted a dangerous ‘patriotic bill’, criminalising any ‘attack on sovereignty and national interest’, threatening the work of journalists,” says RWB. The economic situation in Zimbabwe is holding back development of the media, says RWB. The cost of creating a new media outlet is prohibitive and discourages investors, while the annual licensing fees for a TV channel can reach tens of thousands of dollars. This situation allows the state to maintain its grip on the sector, with nearly 70% of print and broadcast media outlets under its control. Poorly paid journalists are exposed to the temptation of bribes, which weakens their independence. _*Nowhere-to-be-Found Cde Bombshell Geza Loses US$1.3 Million as Fallout with President Emmerson Mnangagwa Intensifies*_ Harare – In a dramatic turn of events, the State yesterday withdrew fraud charges against former Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (Arda) chairman Basil Nyabadza, who is accused of defrauding outspoken war veteran Blessed “Bombshell” Geza of US$1 362 000 in a land deal. The withdrawal comes amidst escalating tensions between Geza, a vocal critic of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, and the President’s allies, raising questions about the timing and motivations behind the legal proceedings. The charges were withdrawn before a plea was taken, meaning the evidence can be reused in a subsequent trial. Prosecutor Mr. Anesu Chirenje informed the court that Nyabadza would be summoned back to court once Geza makes himself available. Nyabadza opposed the withdrawal, insisting that charges should be read to him and the trial should commence. However, the new magistrate, Mr. Donald Ndirowei, who took over from Ms. Tilda Mazhande after she recused herself citing personal reasons, sided with the State and withdrew the charges before the plea. Last week, Ms. Mazhande had put the State on notice that she would remove Nyabadza from remand if Geza failed to appear in court. The case revolves around a land deal in which Geza allegedly purchased 42,3504 hectares from Nyabadza for US$1 362 000 on October 29, 2020. According to the State, Geza was granted sole authority to subdivide, develop, and sell the land. Prosecutor Chirenje alleged that Nyabadza misrepresented to Geza that the land had title deeds, which he promised to hand over within a month. However, he failed to deliver. While Geza was in the process of obtaining subdivision permits from the Department of Physical Planning in Mashonaland West, he allegedly discovered that Nyabadza had already sold the same land to Velda Estates. The court heard that Geza attempted to resolve the matter amicably with Nyabadza, only to find that his agreement of sale had been cancelled without his knowledge. As a result, Geza was allegedly prejudiced of US$1 362 000, with no recovery made. The withdrawal of charges against Nyabadza coincides with a concerted campaign to discredit Geza, a militant war veterans leader who recently launched a scathing attack on President Mnangagwa, demanding his resignation and vowing to thwart his alleged plans to extend his rule beyond 2028. Geza has been a vocal critic of President Mnangagwa, repeatedly calling for his resignation and accusing him of failing the country. His outspoken stance has drawn significant attention to his activities and whereabouts, making him a target for those loyal to the President. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is reportedly pursuing four criminal charges against Geza, including undermining the authority of or insulting the President. Allies of President Mnangagwa, including Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, are reportedly referencing an alleged murder case against him. According to The News Hawks, the army then exfiltrated Geza into safety in South Africa, just like they did Mnangagwa in 2017 after he was fired by Mugabe as vice president. A named security agency was involved in the operation, The News Hawks reported. The unfolding events raise concerns about the politicisation of the legal system and the potential use of state resources to target political opponents. With Geza reportedly in South Africa and facing a barrage of charges, his ability to pursue the fraud case against Nyabadza remains uncertain. _*Magistrate recuses self from Geza case*_ HARARE magistrate Tilda Mazhande yesterday recused herself from presiding over a case in which former Agricultural and Rural Development Authority board chairperson Basil Nyabadza is being accused of defrauding outspoken war veteran Blessed Runesu Geza “Bombshell” of over US$1 million. The matter later resumed before Harare magistrate Donald Ndirowei. State prosecutor Anesu Chirenje withdrew charges before plea indicating that the complainant was not available for the trial. Chirenje tendered an affidavit from the investigating officer, Hillary Mazhekete, who stated that he had failed to get hold of Geza. However, Chirenje told the court that the matter will be brought back to court when Geza becomes available to testify. The accused person opposed an application by the State for the withdrawal of the case saying he wanted it to be finalised. It is the State’s case that Geza bought a piece of land measuring 42,3504 hectares from Nyabadza for US$1 362 000 on October 29, 2020. Geza was granted sole authority to subdivide, develop and sell the land. Nyabadza allegedly misrepresented to Geza that the piece of land had title deeds, which he would avail in a month. However, he failed to deliver the title deeds. It is alleged that as Geza was in the process of obtaining subdivision permits for the land from the Department of Physical Planning in Mashonaland West province, he discovered that Nyabadza had sold the land to Velda Estates. The court heard that Geza engaged Nyabadza hoping for an amicable solution, only to discover that the agreement of sale was cancelled without his knowledge. _*Zimplats faces challenges as half-year production dips amid operational disruptions*_ Impala Platinum’s Zimbabwean unit, Zimplats was affected by power supply interruptions and poor availability of trackless machinery during the half-year period to December 2024, consequently lowering mined volumes by 2.5% compared to the same period a year earlier. Zimplats has completed re-development of the large Bimha mine which now has capacity of 3.1 million tons per year. However, during the period under review, Zimplats’ mined volumes “were hampered by poor trackless mobile machinery (TMM) availability at Mupfuti, Bimha and Mupani mines” while “intermittent interruptions to power supply at operations and a slow ramp-up at Bimha Mine following several lost-time injuries” also weighed in. This forced down mined volumes by 2.5% to 3.9 million tons compared to 4 million tons in the comparable period in 2023. Tons milled also decreased by 2.6% to 3.8 million tons due to lower ore supply while metal in concentrate production declined by 2% year-on-year to 279 890 6E ounces. However, Zimplats’ 6E mill head grade improved marginally to 3.38 grammes per ton. This has been attributed to “improved mining quality across the mines and increased tonnage from higher-grade zones” at Rukodzi and Bimha mines. “Lower-than-planned concentrator production, increase in furnace lockup and the delayed commissioning of the expanded smelter converters impacted 6E production, which decreased by 15% to 279 890 ounces from 327 810 ounces. In total 23 191 6E ounces were accumulated between concentrate and final production in the period,” said Zimplats CEO, Alex Mhembere. During the half year period, Zimplats suffered a 6% dip in revenues to $350.2 million (R6.4 billion). This was caused by a 13% decline in sales volumes to 279 740 6E ounces as average metal prices were 8% higher for the period. Moreover, cost of sales decreased by 6% to $323m on the lower sales volumes, partly offset by a 7% increase in costs to $885 per 6E ounce produced. Consequently, profit before income tax was 37% lower at $8.9m after an income tax charge of $4.7m for the half year, Interim post tax profits in Zimplats improved to $4.1m compared to a loss of $8.8m in the previous contrasting period, although there was no dividend declared for the period. Zimplats accessed borrowings of US$4.5m during the half year and closed the period with cash and cash equivalents of $41.4m . The development and upgrade of Mupani Mine which will replace Ngwarati, Rukodzi and part of Mupfuti mines that are depleting “remains on schedule, with full production of 3.6 million tonnes per annum planned” for the first half of 2029. Zimplats has spend a cumulative $339m as at 31 December 2024 against an approved project budget of $386m on Mupani mine development. _*Chitungwiza Pastor Allegedly Rapes Girl (14) And Gives Her Morning After Pills*_ A 36-year-old self-styled prophet is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl who is a member of his church, the Tabernacle of Power Ministries in Chitungwiza. According to HeraldOnline, Prophet Tino, whose real name is Tendai Tinodiwanashe Mashongashika, recently appeared in court to respond to the allegations. The incident reportedly happened on January 12, 2025, after a church service held at Pastor Tino’s home in Unit A. After the service, the youth chair lady asked the girl to stay behind and help arrange the chairs. During this time, Pastor Tino allegedly took the girl into his bedroom, where he forced himself on her and raped her. Afterward, he gave her a cloth to wipe off the blood and took her to her grandmother’s house. Before leaving, he prayed for her. The girl did not initially tell anyone about the assault because Pastor Tino had told her not to. He allegedly said that no one would believe her because he is a pastor. The next morning, on January 13, at around 6 AM, Pastor Tino met the girl again and gave her morning-after pills, instructing her on how to use them. The rape was discovered on January 30 when the girl’s grandmother checked her cell phone and found WhatsApp messages from the pastor proposing love to the 14-year-old girl. The grandmother also saw that the girl had been enquiring about morning-after pills and how to terminate a pregnancy. When she confronted her granddaughter, the girl did not disclose the rape. However, the grandmother informed her aunt, and the teenager then revealed the abuse by Pastor Tino. A medical report was presented in court as evidence. _*MPs Now Enjoy Free Parking In Harare Central Business District*_ Members of Parliament are now exempt from paying parking fees in Harare’s Central Business District. This follows an agreement between Parliament and City Parking, the company that collects parking fees for the City of Harare. Speaker of the National Assembly, Jacob Mudenda, announced that Parliament has reached an agreement with City Parking to allow two vehicles per Member of Parliament to park for free in the CBD. Said Mudenda (via Open Parly): I also wish to inform the House that the Administration of Parliament has reached an agreement with the City Parking, to exempt two vehicles belonging to each of the Members of Parliament from paying parking fees in the Harare Central Business District.Feedback You are therefore requested to submit copies of registration of the two vehicles to the Human Capital Department in office No. 340 on the Third Floor in order to finalise the arrangements. Zimbabwe has more than 200 parliamentarians who will now enjoy free parking in Harare, while ordinary citizens and residents will still have to pay US$1 per hour to park in the same area. Award-winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono commented on the situation, saying that politics in Zimbabwe has become a business, with both the ruling and opposition parties seeking to renew their “business mandate” during election time. He posted on social media: I have told Zimbabweans that politics in Zimbabwe is now a business, where both the ruling and opposition parties come to them at election time to renew their business mandate. But due to political illiteracy, some of our citizens would die for these crooks and looters! If you want free things, join politics! The fact that both ruling and opposition parties seek a mandate from the people during elections, only to prioritise their own interests and financial gain once in power when hospitals have no medication is wild and tragic m. Political illiteracy contributes to this cycle, as citizens who are not well-informed about the political process or the motivations of their leaders are more susceptible to manipulation and empty promises. _*Good News for Zimbabweans: Starlink Boosts Satellite Capacity, Resumes Accepting New Customers from Sold-Out Areas in Zimbabwe*_ Zimbabweans can breathe a sigh of relief as Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, has begun restoring capacity in previously sold-out areas, bringing renewed hope for reliable and high-speed internet access. After months of frustration and limited availability, residents in Bulawayo and towns surrounding Harare, including Macheke and Chegutu, can now place orders for the coveted Starlink kits. While Harare itself is still awaiting its turn, the promise of restored capacity is on the horizon. Starlink’s initial launch in Zimbabwe in 2024 was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, as it offered a much-needed alternative to the slow speeds, high costs, and frequent outages that plague traditional internet service providers (ISPs). However, the surge in demand quickly outstripped supply, leading to widespread shortages and leaving many Zimbabweans unable to secure a Starlink connection. Capacity in Harare and parts of Bulawayo ran out just weeks after Starlink went live in Zimbabwe last year. In Harare, the sold-out area quickly increased to cover areas more than 100km from Harare such as Chegutu and Macheke. This sold out area is reducing though. Both Chegutu and Macheke now have capacity. Other previously sold out areas such as Mvurwi also now have capacity. The restoration of capacity in Bulawayo and surrounding areas marks a significant turning point, particularly for regions where traditional ISPs have struggled to deliver consistent and reliable service. Furthermore, previously restricted areas like Mvurwi and parts of Bulawayo are once again accepting new Starlink users. One of the primary factors contributing to the initial congestion was the proliferation of informal resellers. These individuals and businesses capitalised on the high demand by purchasing multiple kits upon launch and reselling them at a premium to customers who faced challenges such as payment restrictions or a lack of online purchasing access. As Starlink’s network quickly reached capacity, the secondary market thrived on platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. The additional capacity is therefore good news for many. As availability increases, this reseller-driven scarcity is likely to ease, providing direct access to more Zimbabweans. Beyond Zimbabwe, Starlink has also been expanding in neighbouring countries. Since mid-February, capacity has been opening up in Mozambique and Zambia, indicating that SpaceX is actively addressing network congestion across the region. The company has already restored capacity in neighbouring countries like Mozambique and Botswana. This expansion suggests a future where “sold out” becomes a thing of the past. For those eager to ditch slow internet and embrace the high-speed connectivity offered by Starlink, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to order a kit in Zimbabwe: - Visit the Starlink Website: Go to www.starlink.com. - Check Availability: Enter your address to confirm that service is available in your specific area. - Place Your Order: Once availability is confirmed, proceed with ordering your Starlink kit. - Make Payment: Complete the payment process using a valid international payment method. An Ecocash virtual mastercard can also be used. Just load your Ecocash USD wallet, make sure you have at least US$5 extra for charges (eg, If you intend to pay $200 then make sure you load at least $205 to be on the safe side). - Set Up and Enjoy: Upon arrival of your kit, follow the simple setup instructions and begin enjoying high-speed internet access. It’s crucial to act swiftly, as demand remains high and kits could sell out quickly. For residents of Harare and its surrounding areas, the wait is not over yet, but Starlink has assured that capacity will be restored soon, although a specific date has not been provided. The best course of action is to stay informed and be prepared to place your order as soon as the opportunity arises. Zimbabwe’s internet landscape is undergoing a transformation as Starlink expands its capacity in previously sold-out areas. The coming in of Starlink has forced other Internet Service Providers (both ISPs and IAPs) such as Strive Masiyiwa’s Liquid and State-owned Tel One to up their game in order to remain in business. This development signifies a significant shift in the country’s digital connectivity, offering a glimmer of hope for improved internet access and a more connected future. _*High Court to hear Tshabangu's appeal against CCC expulsion*_ Expelled Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) interim secretary-general, Senator Sengezo Tshabangu, is set to have his appeal against expulsion heard at the High Court in Harare this afternoon. In his urgent application, filed through his legal representative, Mr Kholwañi Ngwenya, Senator Tshabangu argues that the terms of office for organs of the party, as set out in Article 6 of the party constitution, expired on 27 May 2024. “Because the terms of office expired, none of the organs in Article 6 of the party constitution, and in particular Professor Welshman Ncube, had lawful and competent authority to appoint a national disciplinary committee and an arbiter general. “The panel appointed by Prof Ncube, purporting to be a national disciplinary committee, and an arbiter general purporting to be one, could not and did not lawfully sit in judgment and prosecution on Senator Tshabangu,” reads the court papers. Senator Tshabangu contends that the ruling of the purported national disciplinary committee, both in verdict and sanction, is of no consequence. _*Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and wife found dead in their home*_ Oscar-winning US actor Gene Hackman has been found dead along with his 63-year-old wife Betsy Arakawa at the New Mexico home. The couple’s dog was also found deceased besides them. While investigations were still at an early stage, no foul play is suspected in the 95-year-old’s death and that of his spouse. The two had been married since 1991. Hackman retired from acting in 2004 and had become a recluse. He is famous for movies such as Bonnie & Clyde, The French Connection, Unforgiven, and Enemy of The State. Chiwenga was the only high-profile official from the Presidium who was not visible at the event, raising fresh speculation about the ongoing power struggles within Zanu PF. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. The event was attended by key government officials, including Chiwenga’s co-vice President, Kembo Mohadi, Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri, State Security Minister Lovemore Matuke, Higher Education Minister Fredrick Shava, and Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Christopher Magomo, among others. Security chiefs were also present, alongside Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) chairperson Michael Reza and Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) director-general Dr Gift Machengete. Nine hundred and seven police officers graduated at the ceremony, with 624 males and 283 females completing their training. However, Chiwenga’s absence overshadowed the proceedings as speculation over his relationship with Mnangagwa continued. Chiwenga’s no-show at Thursday’s event is not an isolated occurrence but part of a growing pattern of absences from key state functions presided over by Mnangagwa. These absences have fueled speculation about a widening rift between the two former allies, with analysts suggesting Chiwenga is strategically distancing himself from Mnangagwa’s administration. Chiwenga played a decisive role in the 2017 coup that ousted former President Robert Mugabe. The two had a tense alliance and reportedly agreed to exchange power after Mnangagwa’s two terms. But Mnangagwa is now pushing Chiwenga out, disregarding the coup gentleman’s agreement. Chiwenga and his military allies have grown increasingly frustrated with Mnangagwa’s move to extend his rule beyond 2028. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. _*Opposition Attacks Blessed Mhlanga’s Detention*_ The arrest and continued detention of Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) journalist Blessed Mhlanga has sparked widespread condemnation from opposition parties in Zimbabwe, who have described the move as a blatant attack on press freedom and democratic values. Mhlanga, who was arrested on Monday and charged with two counts of contravening Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, remains in prison after his bail ruling was postponed to Friday, 28 February 2025, at 12 noon. Stand in magistrate, Marewanazvo Gofa said the delay was attributed to Magistrate Farai Gwatima’s absence due to a funeral. Mhlanga’s arrest stems from allegations that he transmitted data messages inciting violence, based on statements allegedly made by Zanu PF central committee member and liberation war veteran Blessed Geza during press conferences on 27 January and 11 February 2025. Opposition parties said these charges have been widely criticised as an attempt to silence critical journalism and suppress freedom of expression. The Patriotic Front (TPF) has strongly condemned Mhlanga’s incarceration, describing it as a brazen attack on press freedom. “TPF is appalled and outraged by the incarceration of journalist Blessed Mhlanga, a brazen attack on press freedom and a stark reminder of the Zimbabwean government’s relentless war on journalism,” said TPF Secretary General Prosper Ncube. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. Ncube invoked the words of French philosopher Albert Camus, stating, “The duty of journalism is to publish the truth, and the duty of the government is to protect the truth. In Zimbabwe, however, the government seems hell-bent on suppressing the truth, using every tool at its disposal to silence the messengers.” He further criticised the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for its selective application of the law. “The ZRP has once again demonstrated its penchant for targeting journalists, while allowing heist criminals and other perpetrators of serious crimes to roam free. This warped priority and blatant disregard for the rule of law undermine the very foundations of our democracy,” Ncube said. The TPF demanded Mhlanga’s immediate release, an end to the harassment of journalists, and concrete steps by the government to protect press freedom. Ncube also called on the international community to condemn the Zimbabwean government’s actions, quoting Nobel laureate Amartya Sen who said: “A free press is not a luxury, but a necessity, for a functioning democracy.” The Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) also condemned Mhlanga’s arrest, describing it as a reflection of the Zanu PF regime’s contempt for democratic values. “MRP vehemently condemns the arrest and harassment of journalist Blessing Mhlanga by ZRP. This blatant attack on press freedom and the rule of law is a stark reminder of the Zanu PF regime’s contempt for democratic values and human rights,” said MRP’s National Spokesperson Mbonisi Gumbo. Gumbo said MRP demands Mhlanga’s immediate release and an end to the harassment of journalists and opposition leaders. “We call on the international community to condemn these actions and hold the ZANU-PF regime accountable for their blatant disregard for human rights and the rule of law,” he said. Mhlanga’s arrest is the latest in a series of incidents targeting journalists and opposition figures in Zimbabwe with critics arguing the government is using the legal system to intimidate and silence dissenting voices. Both the TPF and MRP have called on the international community to take a stand against the Zimbabwean government’s actions. Ncube quoted Martin Luther King Jr., saying, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” and urged global stakeholders to condemn the persecution of journalists in Zimbabwe. Gumbo echoed this sentiment. “The MRP will continue to stand in solidarity with journalists, opposition leaders, and all those who fight for democracy, freedom, and justice in Zimbabwe.” _*No Change Without ZANU PF Continuity : Prof Jonathan Moyo*_ REQUIEM FOR CHANGE WITH CONTINUITY: There are some who of late have been falling on each other, peddling and exchanging wishes and even hallucinations that what happened yesterday can happen again today just like it happened yesterday. They should perish the thought; that kind of tomorrow never comes, it is not coming. This is in line with the enduring insights about history from the likes of Heraclitus to Karl Marx to George Santana to Eugene O'Neill, and from the rich pool of wisdom embodied in African proverbs. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. The critical takeaway about history from these sources is that — because the essential question about human existence is the same everywhere and is therefore constant and ubiquitous — the past happens over and over again in new ways, shapes or forms, as the present and as the future; hence the abiding biblical tenet in Ecclesiastes 1:9 that “there is no new thing under the sun”. Those who learn nothing and who forget everything from the past are doomed to repeat it, as a tragedy or as a farce. People evolve and adapt as they and the environment around them always change, such that no one can step into the same river twice. While ordinarily change should be for the better; Murphy’s Law dictates otherwise in that in the real world things always tend to go wrong along the way because anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and there’s nothing on earth that cannot go wrong. It is for this reason that the best reform or a meaningful revolution in any and every society is change with continuity. A plan that does not consolidate change with continuity is doomed to end either tragically or farcical. Consequently, the compelling lesson from the foregoing is that there will be no change in Zimbabwe without ZanuPF-continuity. New leaders with new ideas will come from ZanuPF. Anything else is noise from rootless or baseless and self-indulgent voices whose messages are doomed by their lack of continuity; meaning their lack of connection with Zimbabwe's history for the sake of continuity. All told and things being equal; this is why after all has been said and done and whether anyone likes it or not, ZanuPF is here to stay! _*A Nation's Vision: Beyond Individual Ambitions*_ by Mlilo Joyinani and Ndaba Nhuku As Zimbabwe navigates its development trajectory, a crucial question emerges: should a nation's vision be tied to an individual's ambitions, or should it transcend personal interests? President Emmerson Mnangagwa's "ED2030" campaign, implying a potential extension of his term beyond 2028, raises concerns about the country's future. President Mnangagwa has repeatedly stated his commitment to respecting the constitution and stepping down in 2028. However, the "ED2030" campaign and discussions within the ruling ZANU-PF party about extending his term have sparked debate. Critics argue that this would undermine the country's democratic principles and create uncertainty about the nation's future. The concern is not just about President Mnangagwa's personal ambitions, but also about the potential risks of tying a nation's vision to an individual's leadership. What if nature calls it a day and he dies? Would the country's development plans come to a grinding halt? A nation's vision should be resilient enough to withstand changes in leadership and should prioritize the collective interests of its citizens. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. Zimbabwe's development plans should be institutionalized, ensuring that progress is not dependent on individual leaders. The ruling party and government should prioritize succession planning, ensuring a smooth transition of power when the time comes. The government should respect the constitution and adhere to its provisions, including term limits, to maintain stability and democratic credibility. While President Mnangagwa's leadership has been instrumental in shaping Zimbabwe's development agenda, it is essential to prioritize the nation's interests over individual ambitions. By institutionalizing development, prioritizing succession planning, and adhering to the constitution, Zimbabwe can ensure a resilient and sustainable development trajectory that benefits all its citizens. The Constitution of a country should not be based on individual leaders as that would mean every new leader reforms it to suit their needs. Once allowed for President Mnangagwa, what will stop Chiwenga, Chamisa, Ncube, Biti or Tshabangu from doing likewise? ZanuPF , as a liberation and post independent nation founding party, should have been patriotic enough to ensure the country has a Constitution iron that is iron clad from individual or political abuse. Zanu PF would one day have left power popular as a democratic party but as it it, it is soiling its own history and legacy. The national aspirations should arise above personal ambitions and power hunger. _*Mnangagwa set to pacify war veterans*_ President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to hold a crucial meeting with Zimbabwe's war veterans in the coming weeks, amid increasing dissent within their ranks, with some calling for his resignation. The meeting, confirmed by Zanu-PF War Veterans League leader Douglas Mahiya, aims to address grievances among former liberation fighters. The urgency of the gathering comes as a vocal faction, led by ex-combatant Blessed "Bombshell" Geza, openly demands Mnangagwa's departure, accusing him of corruption, nepotism, and plotting to extend his rule beyond the constitutional two-term limit. Mahiya underscored the significance of the dialogue, saying it would allow war veterans to voice their concerns directly to the President. "After the successful launch of the War Veterans Welfare Fund, we saw it fit that comrades meet with their fellow fighter to discuss and spend the day together. The meeting is going to happen two to three weeks from now," Mahiya stated. This engagement comes at a delicate time, as Geza intensifies his campaign against Mnangagwa's "ED2030" agenda, which critics view as a bid to extend his presidency beyond 2028. Geza has instead rallied support for Vice President Constantino Chiwenga to take over. Geza's vocal opposition has also drawn the attention of the state, with legal actions being taken against him. He recently called for a national shutdown and issued a 10-day ultimatum for Mnangagwa to resign, although he later distanced himself from a social media post making the threat. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. The calls for Mnangagwa's resignation are not limited to Geza alone. The War Veterans Pressure Group (WVPG) has also criticized the President, accusing his administration of betraying the liberation struggle by compensating white former farmers displaced during the land reform programme. "To that end, our perception of the situation in the country resonates with that expressed by comrades, specifically, Cde Geza and war-time commanders who are demanding change," the group said in a statement. The growing unrest within Zanu-PF's traditional support base signals potential fractures in the ruling party. Analysts warn that discontent among war veterans played a crucial role in the 2017 coup that led to former President Robert Mugabe's ouster. Meanwhile, Mnangagwa's administration is rolling out the War Veterans Welfare Fund across all 10 provinces, led by Special Investments Presidential adviser Paul Tungwarara. Each province is receiving US$150,000 in zero-percent revolving loans for war veterans to start projects, along with housing initiatives and solar-powered boreholes. Tungwarara dismissed suggestions that the fund was a response to criticism from war veterans, insisting it was long planned. "These heroes battled tirelessly for our freedom. It is our responsibility to ensure their legacies endure," he said. Tungwarara also took aim at social media campaigns calling for Mnangagwa's removal, warning, "You cannot challenge the President without confronting the entire presidium and Cabinet. We remain focused on positive efforts for Zimbabwe's future." Political analyst Pardon Taodzera believes the planned dialogue is a strategic move to prevent further divisions within Zanu-PF. "By creating a platform for war veterans to voice their concerns, Mnangagwa acknowledges their significance while trying to maintain party unity," he said. Taodzera noted that the timing of the meeting, coupled with the welfare initiatives, reflects a dual approach: offering economic support while attempting political reconciliation. "This isn't just about loans or a borehole — it's about securing their allegiance," he explained. As Zimbabwe navigates political uncertainty, Mnangagwa's ability to manage the growing discontent within the war veterans' ranks may prove pivotal in shaping the country's political future. _*Grace Mugabe In Rare Appearance*_ Former, First Lady Grace Mugabe made a rare public appearance on Thursday in Harare, where she signed the book of condolences for the late former Namibian President, Sam Nujoma. She joined mourners in honouring the life and legacy of Nujoma, Namibia’s founding father and a key figure in Africa’s liberation history. Nujoma, who passed away in Namibia early this month, was a towering figure in African politics and a close ally of Zimbabwe’s late President Robert Mugabe. The two leaders shared a deep bond forged through their nations’ protracted struggles against colonial rule. Nujoma led Namibia’s fight for independence from South African apartheid rule, just as Mugabe led Zimbabwe’s war against British colonial domination. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. Their friendship extended beyond liberation struggles as they worked together to shape regional politics, including forming the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Both were champions of pan-Africanism, land reform, and economic independence, often standing in defiance of Western influence. Their legacies continue to shape political discourse in both countries and the broader SADC region. However, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been grappling with the challenge of managing Mugabe’s enduring legacy in Zimbabwe. Despite efforts to rebrand the ruling ZANU-PF government and distance it from some of Mugabe’s policies, the former president’s influence remains deeply embedded in Zimbabwean political culture. Mnangagwa’s rise to power through a military-assisted takeover in 2017 alienated many within Mugabe’s inner circle, including his widow, Grace Mugabe. Her reappearance at the Nujoma memorial event is symbolic, underscoring the lasting impact of her late husband’s legacy. Meanwhile, Mnangagwa has sought to position himself as a reformist, courting Western investment and attempting to mend diplomatic ties. However, he continues to struggle with economic decline, governance crises, and public discontent, which have led many to compare his administration unfavourably to Mugabe’s era. _*Robbers Steal Chinamasa’s New Car*_ In a daring heist, armed robbers raided the farm of ZANU PF Secretary for Legal Affairs, Patrick Chinamasa, making off with a brand-new Mazda BT-50 double cab vehicle, a pistol, and other valuables. The robbery occurred under the cover of darkness when four men overpowered the security guard stationed at the main entrance of the farm before targeting the farm manager. The suspects tied up both men, force-marched them into the main farmhouse, and covered them with blankets while they ransacked the property. _*Cost Of Living Skyrockets*_ Details to follow… _*Implats seeks meeting with Mnangagwa over Zimbabwe forex rules*_ IMPALA Platinum (Implats) is seeking a meeting with Zimbabwean president Emmerson Mnangagwa to discuss foreign exchange retention rules that make it increasingly difficult for the miner to invest in the southern African country. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe recently increased the amount of dollar receipts it retains, which potentially increases the cost of goods and services that have to be procured in the local currency. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. “We are concerned about the need for increased access to forex by the Zimbabwean government. It is something that needs to be discussed between our company and the government,” said Nico Muller, CEO of Implats. “It is something that is on the agenda for us to have a discussion with the finance minister [Mthuli Ncube] as well as the principle [Mnangagwe]. It is not something I want to scrub under the carpet.” Implats’ 85% owned Zimplats borrowed money in order to pay for capital goods because the cash it was receiving from the dollar receipts fell short, said Meroonisha Kerber, Implats CFO in a presentation of the firm’s interim results on Thursday. “From an efficiency point of view it makes sense to borrow there [in Zimbabwe] as well as from a discipline perspective because, as we have said, all our operations have to fund all of their own capital,” she said. - Zimplats faces challenges as half-year production dips amid operational disruptions - Implats production falls as challenges mount in PGM market Implats said earlier today that it was assessing its portfolio in the event that poor platinum group metal prices persisted. Muller identified the firm’s Canadian mine Lac des Iles (Impala Canada) and Marula as the most vulnerable assets. Lac des Iles would be run down as the firm had last year targeted its high margin ounces, reducing its reserve life. Regarding Marula, a decision has to be made in two years regarding a second phase expansion which would access up to 24 years of reserves. It first, however, had to become cash flow positive, said Muller. Muller said most of the cost cuts, including job losses, had been done with little now to reduce in overall corporate overheads. “We are now at portfolio decisions,” he said. There were several shafts in the firm’s flagship Rustenburg division that were also “sailing close to the wind”, he told media earlier in the day. Implats has invested heavily in the processing capacity of its Zimplats. Said Muller: “We have always been positive about our investment orientation with regards to Zimbabwe. We do believe the Great Dyke offers the best available resource out there. _*You cannot be on national duty every week – ministers under fire for evading Parliament, failing to respond to policy questions*_ A number of cabinet ministers are under fire for not participating in Parliament business, a concern that has been raised by Speaker Jacob Mudenda. During Wednesday’s Question and Answer (Q &A) session, Mudenda revealed that quite a number of cabinet ministers had given apologies on the pretext of being on national duty, something he said should be investigated. The Q & A session is one of the most important Parliament business schedules where the public gets answers to policy questions asked by their constituency representatives (MPs) from cabinet ministers. In recent years, cabinet ministers and the two VPs have evaded the session, leaving citizens without crucial information needed for development’s sake. Several MPs have raised their concerns since the previous Parliament until now (10th Parliament), with the Speaker at one point having threatened to report culprits to President Emmerson Mnangagwa. “After listening to this, there are quite clear apologies that have been very consistent to you. And my suspicion is that these ministers who make apologies cannot be on national duty every week. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. “I am therefore directing the truck and the staff to make a proper analysis of those ministers who have been consistently telling their apologies,” said Mudenda. He added, “And such apologies do not seem to answer that, actually. And where you have deputy ministers, again, consistently accepting themselves as an apology, that cannot be accepted. Second, in terms of the Constitution, Provisional Section 107, Subsection 2, it is very clear that every Vice President, minister, and deputy minister must attend parliament and parliamentary committees in order to answer questions concerning matters for which he or she is collectively or individually responsible. Chiwenga and Mohadi rarely come to Parliament during the Q and A session. He went on, “The challenges government is facing and what government is doing about those challenges. And that erodes public trust in the government of the day. We cannot afford to miss that golden opportunity. “We should not. And above all, it is the taxpayer who shoulders the responsibilities of us being in our offices. And that must be respected.” The Speaker highlighted that some important written questions had not been answered since 2024 to date. Said Mudenda, “And the apology must be taken sooner rather than later. That’s the first observation. The second observation is that when His Excellency addressed the cabinet, the 25th cabinet session, he made a very telling statement in which he was appealing to all the ministers and their deputies to perform in terms of their contribution on this. “I have been analysing questions, written questions, which have not been attended to. And I will go through them. A question to the Minister of Industry and Commerce (Mangaliso Ndlovu). One question has been outstanding since the beginning of the programme. _*Zim shells out US$1,6 billion on second hand cars*_ Zimbabweans have spent US$1,6 billion on importing second-hand vehicles over the past six years, underscoring the urgent need to revive the local automotive industry. Speaking during a meeting with a South African business delegation led by the Association of the African Automobile Manufacturers (AAAM) on Wednesday, Industry and Commerce Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu emphasised that reversing these losses is a priority. “For the last six years, we have spent US$1,6 billion on second-hand vehicles,” he said. “Not to mention the jobs that we have exported. “The majority of those are pre-owned vehicles, most of which last less than three years in the country.” He said revival of the country’s iron and steel industry would pave the way for increased local vehicle production. “With our iron and steel sector taking shape, we believe we can re-localise a significant portion of automotive manufacturing,” he said. Sunday Mail _*Simbisa Defies Economic Challenges with Aggressive Expansion*_ Despite Zimbabwe’s ongoing economic difficulties, Simbisa Brands, the country’s largest fast-food chain, continues to grow its presence across the region, showcasing resilience and adaptability in a tough operating environment. According to a report by NewZWire, Simbisa opened a net total of 38 new counters between December 2023 and December 2024, with 16 of these added in just the last six months. The company shows no signs of slowing down, with plans to launch an additional 10 outlets by June 2025. This expansion underscores Simbisa’s commitment to maintaining its dominance in the fast-food industry, even as consumers grapple with declining disposable incomes. In the six months leading up to December 2023, Simbisa served 24.8 million customers, a 7% increase compared to the same period the previous year. However, the company faced a 3% decline in average spending per customer, a reflection of the economic pressures faced by consumers. In response, Simbisa has strategically lowered some of its prices to remain accessible to its customer base. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. Adapting to the 1% Fast Food Tax Simbisa is also contending with the government’s recently introduced 1% fast food tax, a measure that has added another layer of complexity to its operations. The company has stated that it is actively developing strategies to mitigate the tax’s impact on menu prices while safeguarding its profit margins. _*Liquidity constraints weigh on ZSE as trading activity remains subdued*_ Monday’s trading session is expected to reflect continued liquidity constraints on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE), with activity anticipated to remain subdued. The ZSE All Share Index gained 0,49 percent at the end of last week but remains down 12,31 percent year-to-date. The Top 10 and Top 15 indices also registered marginal gains, rising 0,72 percent and 0,57 percent, respectively. However, the Medium Cap index declined by 0,16 percent. Market turnover stood at US$1,79 million, with foreign buys amounting to US$0,944 million, while no foreign sales were recorded. Platinum Securities noted that the coming week is likely to see continued low trading activity due to liquidity challenges, though blue-chip counters such as Delta and Econet may provide some stability. “On the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange (VFEX), sentiment remains weak as low foreign investor participation and competing demand for USD-denominated assets continue to weigh on the market,” they added. Despite these challenges, individual counters such as African Sun and Padenga saw gains of 0,72 percent and 6,05 percent, respectively, while Simbisa advanced by 2,45 percent. _*OK Zimbabwe Faces Restructuring Amid Shareholder Shakeup and Credit Monitoring*_ OK Zimbabwe, the country’s largest retail chain, has embarked on a major restructuring process following significant management changes and a fresh influx of investors. The retailer is implementing a recovery strategy to address financial difficulties that have led to store closures and stock shortages. According to NewZWire, the company announced the return of former executives Willard Zireva and Albert Siyavora to lead a “comprehensive review and restructuring” while a search for new leadership is underway. This move follows the departure of CEO Max Karombo, CFO Phil Mushosho, and Supply Chain Director Knox Mupaya. Shareholder Shakeup Raises Concerns Ahead of the management overhaul, an unusual trading activity on February 5 saw approximately 23 million OK Zimbabwe shares change hands, raising concerns of a takeover. Stanbic Nominees offloaded 12,448,714 shares, while AMZIM Pension Fund-Old Mutual Investment Group sold 1,151,945 shares. The primary buyers were Akribos Wealth Managers Nominees, which acquired 12,285,281 shares, and Akribos Nominees, which took up 4,053,000 shares. Datvest Nominees purchased 3,199,625 shares. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. Akribos Wealth Managers, which had a 1.7% stake in 2023, has been steadily increasing its holdings and is now the tenth-largest shareholder with a 2% stake. Mega Market, one of the biggest investors on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE), also increased its OK Zimbabwe portfolio by acquiring 844,300 shares, adding to its existing 55,470,376 shares. Understanding OK Zimbabwe’s Financial Crisis The retailer’s financial turmoil has been attributed to stock procurement challenges, currency shifts, and supplier reluctance to accept payments in Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG). OK Zimbabwe had procured stock in US dollars from April to June 2024, securing contracts with suppliers to ensure competitive pricing and extended payment terms. However, the introduction of ZiG in April significantly reduced USD collections, dropping from 75% to below 30%, leaving the company unable to meet supplier obligations. Further complications arose when the ZiG devalued in September 2024. The exchange rate adjustment from 13 to 26 meant that OK Zimbabwe needed twice the amount of ZiG to settle supplier debts, worsening its liquidity crisis. The Recovery Plan In response, OK Zimbabwe has entered a Credit Monitoring Arrangement (CMA), allowing banks to assess its financial position and recovery prospects. The process will be led by Grant Thornton, which will engage with suppliers on behalf of the company’s creditors. OK Zimbabwe’s largest creditors include: - Innscor: US$1.1 million - Mega Market: US$966,201 - National Foods: US$861,337 - Seed Co: US$782,494 - Delta Corporation: US$742,880 - Blue Ribbon: US$602,606 Overall, the company owes US$9.88 million and ZiG 177.09 million to its top creditors, accounting for 69% of its total obligations. Store Closures and Strategic Expansion As part of its restructuring, OK Zimbabwe is shutting down underperforming branches in Glen Norah, Kuwadzana Extension, Julius Nyerere Way (R. Manyika), and Chitungwiza Town Centre. These will be replaced with new outlets in Pomona, Makoni, and Liberation City. The company is also focused on decentralising working capital, cutting operational costs, and securing new funding for both operations and capital expenditure. As OK Zimbabwe navigates its financial recovery, shareholders and industry observers will be watching closely to see if the company can stabilise and reclaim its position as Zimbabwe’s leading retailer. _*Komani: Police nab bus driver en route to Zimbabwe with millions worth of abalone*_ Komani police arrested a 48-year-old bus driver in the Komani CBD on Sunday, February 23, while en route to Zimbabwe. The driver was found in possession of 26 boxes of abalone valued at R2 million. Reporting on the incident, police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela stated that the Queenstown dog unit (K9) received information about a bus from East London heading to Zimbabwe with tower batteries. According to her, following this tip-off, the bus was intercepted in the Komani CBD and searched. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. “Upon searching, five solar batteries worth R25,000, six solar panels valued at R12,000, four tower batteries worth R160,000, inverters worth R200,000, and 10 boxes of medication were also recovered,” she added. The 48-year-old driver of the bus was arrested on charges of possession of abalone, suspected stolen property, contravention of the Medicines Act 101 of 1965, contravention of the Marine Living Resources Act 18 of 1998, and damage to essential infrastructure. The suspect is expected to appear before the Komani Magistrate’s Court today, February 25. _*Africa’s medical system risks ‘collapse in next few years’, warns health leader*_ Health services in Africa are at risk of “collapse in the next few years” due to soaring chronic diseases, a senior public health leader has warned. Foreign aid to Africa has been focused on infectious diseases, leaving conditions such as cancer and diabetes to escalate, said Dr Githinji Gitahi, group CEO of Amref Health Africa. In sub-Saharan Africa, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including hypertension, diabetes and heart disease accounted for 37% of deaths in 2019, up from 24% in 2000. They are forecast to become the leading cause of death in the region by 2030 – driven by factors such as unhealthy western-style diets, less active lifestyles and air pollution. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. “Aid is not charity” and will inevitably follow donor countries’ own interests such as stopping infectious diseases that could spread overseas, said Gitahi, who called for Africa’s leaders to step up their own work on controlling NCDs. Gitahi spoke to the Guardian at the Global NCD Alliance Forum in Kigali, Rwanda, earlier this month, a gathering of more than 700 delegates from 89 countries. _*Safer roads for everyone. . .Tame traffic jungle, says President Mnangagwa*_ Details to follow… _Ramaphosa moves to ‘mend relations’ with Trump following aid cuts*_ South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has indicated his willingness to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in an effort to mend strained relations between the two nations. This development follows Trump’s decision to cut aid to South Africa, citing concerns over the country’s land expropriation policies and its stance on international legal matters. The fallout between the two leaders has further complicated diplomatic and economic ties, with Ramaphosa now seeking to rebuild relations through direct engagement. *IGNITE SPORT* _*Chelsea's 2024 squad is most expensive ever - UEFA report*_ Chelsea's squad at the end of the 2024 financial year was the most expensive ever in terms of transfer fees per the annual European Club Finance and Investment Landscape report, commissioned by UEFA. The publication analyses all of Europe's top leagues through submissions and detailed reviews. Its findings paint a vivid picture of the scale at which Premier League clubs are shelling out fees and accruing revenue. The study found that English clubs' transfer spending increased by 17% to a record €2.1 billion ($2.2bn) in 2023. Of the 20 most expensive squads in the world, nine are from from the Premier League. This list is topped by Chelsea, who since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in the summer of 2022 have signed 41 players across six transfer windows. The report found that their squad at the end of the club's 2024 financial year was officially the most expensive ever assembled, with a combined transfer cost of €1.656bn. It comfortably surpassed the value of the Manchester United's squad of 2023, which cost €1.422bn. Audited figures from the club's financial statements showed that across a five-year period from July 2019 to June 2024, their spending far exceeded that of any other European club. They spent / invested just under €2bn in transfer fees during this period, two-thirds more than the next highest club Manchester City [€1.175bn] and Arsenal [€1.145bn] and considerably more than Barcelona [€733m] or Liverpool [€657m]. the report found. Chelsea's exorbitant spending under Boehly-Clearlake has yet to translate to on-field success, with the club failing to qualify for the Champions League or win a trophy under their leadership. Ahead of their clash against Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, a group of Chelsea fans held a protests against the way the club is being run. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. The penalties were due to "derogatory and offensive statements towards the Turkish referee" and accusations of chaos and disorder in Turkish football, the TFF said. The TFF said Mourinho's remarks violated sports ethics, promoted violence and disorder and could incite fan incidents. The visitors' defensive frailties were exploited by the home side as both goals resulted from failed clearances, Soucek prodding in from close range in the 21st minute and a shot from captain Jarrod Bowen being deflected in by Jannik Vestergaard. It was a second victory in a row for West Ham under manager Graham Potter after a surprise 1-0 win at Arsenal, an upturn in form after losing three and drawing one of their previous four games. _*Rashford up for permanent Villa move*_ Manchester United and England forward Marcus Rashford, 27, is prepared to turn his January loan move to Aston Villa into a permanent deal Ignite Media Zimbabwe sports tit bits: *Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also keeping tabs on Rashford* *Liverpool have a growing interest in Newcastle and Sweden forward Alexander Isak, while Arsenal also remain keen on a move for the 25-year-old* *Arsenal might have to sell Belgium forward Leandro Trossard, 30, or their 23-year-old Brazil winger Gabriel Martinelli to fund a summer rebuild, with both players targets for Saudi Pro League clubs* *Victor Osimhen is keen on a transfer to Manchester United, although they will need to overcome several major clubs to sign the 26-year-old Nigeria striker, who is on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli* *Manchester United are prepared to offload Denmark forward Rasmus Hojlund, 22, in order to gain Osimhen's signature* *Chelsea remain keen on the possibility of signing Borussia Dortmund and Germany winger Karim Adeyemi, who is valued at 45m euros (£37.1m)* *Manchester City are keen to sign a goalkeeper to replace Brazilian Ederson, 31, this summer and the club are in talks with Porto over a move for 25-year-old Portugal international Diogo Costa* *Bayern Munich have withdrawn their offer of a new contract to Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich after becoming frustrated with the 30-year-old's hesitation to extend his deal* *The Premier League could be forced to have two separate transfer windows this summer because of disruption caused by the Club World Cup* This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production.

The stand-in magistrate, Marewanazvo Gofa, cited the bereavement of Farai Gwatima, the magistrate who initially heard Mhlanga’s bail application, as the reason for the delay. Mhlanga, who appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court on Thursday clad in prison attire, faces serious charges under Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act for allegedly transmitting messages that incite violence. The charges stem from interviews Mhlanga conducted with Blessed Geza, a liberation war veteran and ZANU PF central committee member, on January 27 and February 11, 2025. These interviews were broadcast on AMH’s terrestrial television station, HSTV. The State alleges that Mhlanga broadcast content from a press conference addressed by Geza, in which the war veteran called on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resign over alleged grand corruption and other misdeeds. AMH are the publishers of NewsDay, The Standard, and Zimbabwe Independent. Mhlanga had initially appeared in court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody by Magistrate Farai Gwatima, pending the bail ruling, which was initially scheduled for Thursday. The decision to make Mhlanga wear prison garb ahead of the bail ruling has sparked outrage and accusations of selective justice. Critics have pointed out that other high-profile figures, such as journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and politician Job Sikhala, were allowed to wear their own clothes while in remand. Abel Runga, speaking to Change Radio before the postponement, described Mhlanga’s treatment as a case of selective justice. “Blessed Mhlanga should not be treated like a convicted prisoner, especially since the state’s case against him is weak,” Runga said. He also argued that the arrest was an attack on constitutional provisions, particularly Section 61 (freedom of expression), Section 62 (right to access information), and Section 141 (protecting public participation in law-making processes). Toneo, a local media personality, has even called for a media blackout in protest of Mhlanga’s detention, stating, “If they don’t give Blessed Mhlanga bail, my media house will stop publishing or posting news for 14 days.” The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has also weighed in on the matter, calling on Zimbabwean authorities to immediately release Mhlanga. “It is absolutely shameful that Blessed Mhlanga has been thrown behind bars simply because he gave voice to a war veteran’s criticism of Zimbabwe’s government,” said CPJ Africa Program Coordinator, Muthoki Mumo, in Nairobi. “Zimbabwean authorities should free Mhlanga unconditionally and respond to their citizens’ concerns, rather than punishing the messenger.” Mhlanga, who works with the privately owned Heart and Soul TV, had previously reported that three armed men came to his office searching for him on February 17, soon after which the police phoned him to ask him to come in for questioning. On February 21, the police issued a statement seeking information about Mhlanga’s whereabouts. Mhlanga responded to the police summons on February 24 and was subsequently arrested. According to the Zimbabwe chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights network, and Mhlanga’s lawyer Chris Mhike, he faces two counts of transmission of data messages “inciting violence or damage to property” under the 2021 Cyber and Data Protection Act. If found guilty, Mhlanga could face up to five years in jail and a fine of up to US$700. Prosecutors had opposed Mhlanga’s bail application, arguing that he was a flight risk, Mhike told CPJ. Mhlanga was previously assaulted and arrested in 2022 while covering the attempted arrest of an opposition politician, highlighting a pattern of harassment against journalists in Zimbabwe. Veteran award-winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono expressed his lack of surprise at the postponement, stating that authorities “always do that when their victim is innocent.” Hopewell Chin’ono posted on X: “As expected, the ruling on journalist Blessed Mhlanga’s bail application has been postponed to 12 PM on Friday. They always do this when their victim is innocent—cowards!” The postponement of Mhlanga’s bail ruling has further heightened concerns about the state of press freedom in Zimbabwe and the potential for the government to use the law to silence critical voices. The eyes of the nation, and the international community, will now be on the Harare Magistrates’ Court at 12 PM on Friday, awaiting the outcome of this crucial case. _*Every day that passes perpetuates his suffering for doing his work – lawyer says as journalist Mhlanga’s bail ruling is postponed again*_ The bail ruling in the case Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) journalist Blessed Mhlanga is accused of transmitting information that incites violence or damage to property, has been postponed to Friday 12 pm by stand-in Magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa. Gofa deferred the ruling, citing that Magistrate Farai Gwatima, who is presiding over Mhlanga’s case is absent, attending to a bereavement. Mhlanga was arrested on Monday after presenting himself at the Harare Central Police Station in the company of his lawyer, Chris Mhike. He is charged under Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23. The charges relate to him granting an interview to Blessed Geza, a war veteran and a staunch opponent of the Mnangagwa 2030 agenda. Geza had issued press briefings through AMH broadcaster HSTv, calling for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resign from office immediately. Mhlanga is the head of HSTv. - Blessed Mhlanga: Why his arrest is unlawful and State-facilitated abduction - Journalist Blessed Mhlanga to spend two more nights in jail as bail ruling is deferred to February 27 Mhike said he is disappointed in the postponement of the bail ruling, which means his client, Mhlanga, will spend another night in jail for doing his journalistic work. “We are disappointed with this development because every day that passes with this journalist in custody is an elongation or perpetuation of his suffering, suffering for doing his work as a journalist,” said Mhike. “We sympathise with the circumstances of the magistrate, but we remain deeply aggrieved by the fact that the time in which our client is in custody has been made longer, so we wait with hope that when we come back tomorrow (February 28) Blessed will find his liberty once again.” _*”Blessed Mhlanga Being Treated Like A Convicted Criminal”*_ Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) senior journalist, Blessed “Dhara” Mhlanga, appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court on Thursday wearing prison attire. Mhlanga is facing charges under Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act for allegedly transmitting messages that incite violence. The charges are related to interviews Mhlanga conducted with Blessed Geza, a liberation war veteran and ZANU PF central committee member, on January 27 and February 11, 2025. Mhlanga had initially appeared in court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody by Harare Magistrate Farai Gwatima, pending a ruling on his bail application, which was set for Thursday. Ahead of the bail ruling, Mhlanga was made to wear prison garb, sparking reactions from some who have raised concerns about the fairness of this treatment. Critics have pointed out that other figures, such as journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and politician Job Sikhala, were allowed to wear their own clothes while in remand. Before the ruling, Abel Runga spoke to Change Radio, describing Mhlanga’s treatment as a case of selective justice. Said Runga: Blessed Mhlanga should not be treated like a convicted prisoner, especially since the state’s case against him is weak. He also complained that the arrest in the first place is an attack on constitutional provisions, particularly Section 61 which guarantees the people of Zimbabwe the freedom of expression, Section 62 which guarantees the right to access information, and Section 141 which protects public participation in law-making processes. Toneo, a local media personality, has called for a media blackout in response to Mhlanga’s detention. He said: If they don’t give Blessed Mhlanga bail, my media house will stop publishing or posting news for 14 days. _*The Details: President Emmerson Mnangagwa to meet War Veterans and ‘talk’ as Cde Bombshell Geza demands his resignation*_ President Emmerson Mnangagwa is poised to engage in a critical dialogue with war veterans in the coming weeks, a move orchestrated amidst growing calls for his resignation from within the ranks of the liberation war heroes themselves. Zanu PF war veterans league boss Douglas Mahiya confirmed the impending meeting, highlighting its significance in addressing a multitude of issues impacting the ex-combatants. The meeting’s urgency is underscored by the vocal dissent emanating from a faction of war veterans, spearheaded by the firebrand Blessed “Bombshell” Geza, who has publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with Mnangagwa’s leadership. Geza, a former Zanla ex-combatant, has been at the forefront of calls for Mnangagwa’s resignation, accusing him of overseeing rampant corruption and nepotism, and of plotting to extend his term beyond the constitutionally mandated limit. Mahiya emphasised that the meeting would provide a crucial platform for veterans of the liberation struggle to air their grievances directly to the President. It is also envisioned as an opportunity for Mnangagwa to address the former liberators’ concerns and articulate his vision for their welfare. Speaking at the launch of the Harare provincial welfare fund, Mahiya stated, “After the successful launch of the war veterans welfare fund, we saw it fit that comrades meet with their fellow fighter to discuss and spend the day together. The meeting is going to happen two to three weeks from now. This is a testament to our government’s unwavering commitment to those who fought for our freedom.” The timing of this meeting is particularly sensitive, coinciding with Geza’s escalating campaign against Mnangagwa’s perceived bid to stay in power beyond 2028, when the President’s two-term limit expires. Geza has openly advocated for Vice President Chiwenga to take over the reins, further fueling speculation about potential divisions within the ruling party. Geza’s outspoken opposition to Mnangagwa’s “ED2030” mantra has drawn the ire of the state, resulting in criminal charges against him. Some observers view Geza’s prosecution as victimisation of a man who has bravely challenged Mnangagwa’s unpopular attempts to remain in office. In a recent press conference, Geza urged Zimbabweans to prepare for a national shutdown as calls for Mnangagwa’s resignation grow louder. “We implore you to resign peacefully. If you don’t resign in peace, people will use the constitution to exercise their right to push you out of office,” Geza said. He also warned the police that if they dared to beat or shoot demonstrators protesting against Mnangagwa, the public would hold them accountable in their own neighbourhoods. Geza also issued a 10-day ultimatum to Mnangagwa to resign or face unspecified action, although he later denied being behind the social media account that posted the threat. He has also declared that he will occupy the State House against all odds, adding that the “real drama” is about to unfold against Mnangagwa’s “machinations,” indicating his involvement in a broader political effort to remove the President. The war veteran’s defiance has raised concerns about growing dissent within Zanu-PF and the potential for unrest in Zimbabwe, which is already grappling with renewed political instability over Mnangagwa’s third term ambitions and perceived governance failures. Adding to the complexity of the situation, a groundswell of discontent is brewing within the ranks of Zimbabwe’s war veterans, with a growing number voicing their support for Geza’s call for Mnangagwa to step down. The War Veterans Pressure Group (WVPG) has emerged as the latest voice to condemn Mnangagwa’s government, citing alleged suppression of dissent, constitutional violations, and a perceived abandonment of the values that underpinned Zimbabwe’s hard-won independence. “To that end, our perception of the situation in the country resonates with that expressed by comrades, specifically, Cde Geza and war-time commanders who are demanding change,” the group stated, aligning themselves with Geza’s sentiments and the broader calls for reform. The WVPG went on to paint a grim picture of Zimbabwe’s current state, accusing State authorities of systemic abuse, economic mismanagement, and implementing policies that “reverse the gains of the revolution.” The group’s statement paints a picture of a nation “adrift in a sea of corruption, kleptocracy and lawlessness,” warning that the current trajectory dishonours the sacrifices made during the liberation war. The lobby group accused Mnangagwa’s government of betrayal following its decision to compensate white former farmers who lost their farms during Zimbabwe’s land reform programme at the turn of the century. Amidst this backdrop of growing dissent, the Mnangagwa administration is also rolling out the War Veterans Welfare Fund across all 10 provinces, spearheaded by Special Investments Presidential adviser Paul Tungwarara. The fund provides each province with US$150,000 in zero-percent revolving loans for war veterans to initiate projects. The initiative also includes the construction of houses and the drilling of solar-powered boreholes at the former liberation guerillas’ rural homes. While the government touts the War Veterans Welfare Fund as a genuine effort to improve the lives of ex-combatants, critics have suggested that the project is a thinly veiled attempt to buy the silence of war veterans who have become increasingly critical of Mnangagwa’s leadership. Tungwarara, however, vehemently denied that the project was a response to criticism from a section of war veterans. “These heroes battled tirelessly for our freedom. It is our responsibility to ensure their legacies endure. The project was already in the pipeline and it was just waiting to be executed,” he asserted. He framed the programme as a vital link between Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and its modern development goals, stating, “Their courage inspires us to reject division and work collectively towards economic sovereignty.” Tungwarara also addressed the political tensions head-on, condemning unnamed groups allegedly using social media to destabilise Mnangagwa’s administration. “Let me be clear: you cannot challenge the President without confronting the entire presidium and Cabinet. We remain focused on positive efforts for Zimbabwe’s future,” he declared. Political analyst Pardon Taodzera believes that the planned dialogue demonstrates a strategic effort at reconciliation, aimed at averting a potentially damaging fallout with a wider section of war veterans. The analyst drew parallels to the events of 2017, when the late former President Robert Mugabe was ousted in a military coup following a breakdown in relations with ex-combatants who had become disillusioned with his leadership. “By creating a platform for war veterans to voice their concerns, he acknowledges their enduring role in Zimbabwe’s liberation while proactively mitigating tensions,” Taodzera commented. “This isn’t merely about appeasement — it’s an astute recognition that the stability of Zanu PF’s base hinges on maintaining trust with these liberation icons.” Taodzera highlighted the timing of the meeting, which coincides with both the rollout of the War Veterans Welfare Fund and growing dissent within the ex-combatant community, as being crucial to ensuring stability not only within the ruling Zanu PF party but also within the country as a whole. “The welfare initiatives, paired with open dialogue, signal a dual approach: tangible economic support complemented by political inclusivity,” Taodzera said. “This isn’t just about loans or a borehole — it’s about validating their legacy and securing their allegiance in Zimbabwe’s evolving socio-political landscape.” The analyst also underscored the symbolic significance of Mnangagwa leading the conversation himself. “His identity as ‘Cde Emmerson’ bridges generational and ideological divides. This meeting isn’t just a presidential obligation; it’s a reunion of comrades. That resonance could disarm critics and foster cohesion ahead of critical national objectives,” he concluded. _*Factionalism rocks Zanu-PF's in Bulawayo: currently divided along two main factions..one loyal to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the other supporting his deputy, Constantino Chiwenga, who is considered a leading figure in the party's succession race*_ The Zanu-PF cell verification programme in Bulawayo has been marred by factionalism and infighting within the ruling party, sources have revealed. The exercise, which is essential for party organisation, has been delayed twice under unclear circumstances, with insiders attributing the setbacks to internal party divisions. Zanu-PF is currently divided along two main factions: one loyal to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the other supporting his deputy, Constantino Chiwenga, who is considered a leading figure in the party's succession race. Tensions have intensified following reports that Mnangagwa's loyalists are pushing for an extension of his term by two years, from 2028 to 2030, despite the President's repeated declarations that he intends to step down in 2028 as per the Constitution. These unresolved tensions have impacted party activities, with the cell verification exercise being one of the casualties. Originally scheduled for February 15, the programme was first rescheduled to Sunday, February 23. However, it was once again postponed. A source close to the proceedings confirmed that the exercise would not take place as planned, and that it had been pushed to March, though no official explanation was given. "The situation remains tense. We were supposed to have cell verification on Sunday, but for the second time, it was postponed to March," the source said. "Factionalism is clearly at play here." Another insider confirmed that the new dates for the programme are set for March 1 and 2. In response, Zanu-PF Bulawayo province spokesperson Archibold Chiponda dismissed claims that factionalism was responsible for the delays, attributing the postponements to scheduling conflicts with other significant events. "First, there was a youth inter-district event, then a national war veterans fund lunch, and last week, there were National Youth Day commemorations," Chiponda explained. "The programme was postponed for logistical reasons, not because of factionalism. We are an organised organisation and do not engage in strategic ambiguity." Despite the official statements, the delays have raised concerns about the ongoing factional strife within Zanu-PF, which has plagued the party for years. The factional infighting traces its roots to the era of former President Robert Mugabe, whose failure to manage succession issues ultimately led to his downfall in a military coup in November 2017. The coup, led by Chiwenga, paved the way for Mnangagwa to take power. As the cell verification programme is rescheduled for early March, it remains unclear whether the internal tensions within Zanu-PF will continue to disrupt the party's activities in the lead-up to crucial elections. _*Where is the Opposition as Zimbabweans now depend on warring ZANU-PF factions for salvation? Mbofana*_ ZIMBABWE stands at a crossroads, teetering on the edge of yet another political precipice. The air is thick with tension as factions within the ruling ZANU-PF party lock horns over the future of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s tenure. On one side, loyalists aligned with Mnangagwa are pushing to extend his presidency beyond the constitutional limit of two five-year terms, which would see him remain in power past 2028. On the other, a faction believed to back Vice President Constantino Chiwenga resists this move, with some voices within the party escalating their dissent into bold calls for Mnangagwa’s immediate resignation. Amid this cacophony of infighting, one question echoes louder than all others: where is the opposition? As Zimbabweans grapple with a crumbling economy, rampant corruption, and a decaying infrastructure, the so-called champions of the people are eerily silent, leaving the citizenry to pin their hopes on warring ZANU-PF factions whose motives may have little to do with the welfare of ordinary people. The debate over Mnangagwa’s term extension is not merely a procedural squabble; it is a battle for the soul of Zimbabwe’s political future. The Constitution, enacted in 2013 after a hard-fought referendum, clearly stipulates that a president may serve only two five-year terms. Mnangagwa, having assumed power in November 2017 following the coup that ousted Robert Mugabe and subsequently “winning” disputed elections in 2018 and 2023, is set to conclude his second term in 2028. Yet, his supporters within ZANU-PF are undeterred by this legal barrier. They argue that Mnangagwa needs more time to fulfill his ambitious Vision 2030, a blueprint to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy. This narrative, however, rings hollow to millions of Zimbabweans who have seen little tangible progress since the heralded “Second Republic” was ushered in with fanfare seven years ago. Instead of prosperity, the reality for over 80% of Zimbabweans is one of unrelenting hardship. According to the World Bank, extreme poverty has risen sharply, with more than 49% of the population living on less than $1.90 a day as of 2023. Unemployment hovers at a staggering 90% in the formal sector, forcing millions into a precarious informal economy where survival is a daily gamble. Inflation, though tempered by the introduction of the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency, remains a specter, eroding purchasing power and driving up the cost of basic goods. Health care systems are in tatters, with hospitals lacking essential drugs and equipment, while schools struggle to function amid chronic underfunding. Power generation, once a point of pride, has faltered, with citizens enduring rolling blackouts that can last up to 18 hours a day. These are the issues that gnaw at the core of ordinary Zimbabweans, yet the opposition—historically the voice of the downtrodden—offers no resistance, no outrage, no alternative vision. The silence of the opposition is deafening, but it is not merely a passive absence. It is a vacuum that has forced Zimbabweans to look within ZANU-PF itself for salvation, a perilous proposition given the party’s track record. Recently, voices like that of Blessed Geza, a ZANU-PF Central Committee member and war veteran, have emerged as unlikely beacons of dissent. Geza and his associates have not only opposed Mnangagwa’s term extension but have gone further, demanding his immediate resignation. They point to the undeniable: the impoverishment of millions, the unchecked corruption that siphons national wealth into the hands of a privileged elite, and the collapse of vital systems that once sustained the nation. Their rhetoric is bold, their stance fearless, but their motives remain murky. Are they genuinely moved by the plight of the people, or are they pawns in a broader power struggle between Mnangagwa and Chiwenga? History suggests the latter. The November 2017 coup that toppled Mugabe offers a sobering lesson. Back then, Zimbabweans flooded the streets of Harare, naively believing that the military’s intervention marked the dawn of a new era. The masses cheered as Mugabe’s 37-year reign ended, hopeful that Mnangagwa and his allies, including Chiwenga, would deliver the democratic reforms and economic recovery they so desperately craved. Yet, the “Second Republic” has proven to be a mirage. Far from alleviating suffering, it has deepened it. Corruption, already a festering wound under Mugabe, has metastasized under Mnangagwa. The 2024 Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) ranks Zimbabwe at 158 out of 180 countries, with a score of 21 out of 100,. The CPI measures perceived levels of public sector corruption, with scores ranging from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). Zimbabwe’s 2024 score indicates a significant perception of corruption within its public sector, making it the most corrupt nation in southern Africa. This is not an abstract statistic; it is a lived reality for Zimbabweans who watch as lucrative government contracts—worth millions of dollars—are awarded to shadowy companies linked to the ruling elite. Meanwhile, the country’s vast mineral wealth, including diamonds, gold, and lithium, is plundered and smuggled to destinations like the UAE and South Africa, leaving little for the people who rightfully own it. The looting of these resources should be a rallying cry for the opposition, yet they remain mute. The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), once a formidable force under Nelson Chamisa, has disintegrated into irrelevance. Its leadership fractured after the 2023 elections, with Sengezo Tshabangu—a figure previously unknown to most Zimbabweans—emerging as a self-styled interim Secretary General. Tshabangu’s ascent was no organic rise; it was a calculated maneuver facilitated by ZANU-PF’s machinery. With the blessing of the ZANU-PF-aligned Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Mudenda, and a complicit judiciary, Tshabangu orchestrated a wave of recalls that ousted over a dozen elected CCC parliamentarians. These lawmakers were then barred from contesting the subsequent by-elections, paving the way for ZANU-PF to secure a two-thirds majority in Parliament—a threshold it failed to achieve in the 2023 general elections but desperately needed to push through constitutional amendments, such as Mnangagwa’s term extension. Tshabangu’s group cannot be called a legitimate opposition. They are a caricature, a puppet faction propped up to give the illusion of democratic contestation. Their actions—cozying up to Mnangagwa, attending tours of his Precabe farm in Kwekwe, and endorsing his 2030 agenda—betray their true purpose: self-enrichment at the expense of the people they claim to represent. The lavish perks dangled by the ZANU-PF government—cars, loans, and parliamentary privileges—have proven too tempting to resist. In January 2025, Tshabangu openly declared his willingness to support Mnangagwa’s extended tenure, stating, “If our presence here improves your stay in power and makes the people of Zimbabwe happy, then let it be.” The irony is bitter: an opposition leader cheering for the very regime he should oppose, while the people he claims to serve languish in despair. So, where is the real opposition? The CCC’s collapse has left a void that no other party has filled. The faction led by Welshman Ncube has expelled Tshabangu, but its own legitimacy is questioned, mired in internal squabbles and lacking the grassroots momentum once wielded by Chamisa. Other opposition figures, like Jameson Timba, have been silenced through arrests and prolonged detentions, as seen in his five-month ordeal in 2024 before a suspended sentence was handed down. The state’s repressive tactics—beatings, arrests, and torture—have long been tools to crush dissent, but the opposition’s failure to adapt, reorganize, and resist is its own undoing. The result is a political landscape where Zimbabweans, desperate for change, have no choice but to turn to ZANU-PF’s internal factions, a gamble fraught with danger. Relying on a Chiwenga-backed faction for salvation is a risky bet. The Vice President, a former army general who orchestrated the 2017 coup alongside Mnangagwa, is no stranger to power plays. His supporters’ public opposition to Mnangagwa’s term extension has won him unlikely allies among war veterans and civil society, but his ambitions are unlikely to prioritize the ordinary citizen. The factional battles within ZANU-PF have historically been about control—of resources, patronage networks, and state machinery—rather than the welfare of the masses. The 2017 coup promised liberation but delivered continuity; a Chiwenga-led takeover could repeat the pattern. Analysts like Admire Mare have noted that any pushback against Mnangagwa’s agenda will require a broad alliance of forces—opposition parties, civil society, and dissenting ZANU-PF elements—but without a credible opposition to anchor this coalition, the effort risks being co-opted by self-serving elites. The absence of a genuine opposition leaves Zimbabweans vulnerable to the same trap they fell into in 2017. Back then, the euphoria of Mugabe’s ouster blinded many to the reality that power was merely shifting hands within the same party, not transforming the system. Today, as Geza and others rail against Mnangagwa, the temptation to rally behind them is strong, especially given the opposition’s inertia. But salvation from within ZANU-PF is a mirage. The party’s DNA—forged in decades of authoritarianism, violence, and kleptocracy—does not lend itself to the kind of radical reform Zimbabwe needs. Whether it’s Mnangagwa’s loyalists or Chiwenga’s faction, the endgame is power, not progress. The question remains: why is the opposition so quiet? Some argue it has been systematically dismantled—through recalls, court rulings, and state repression—a process that began with Tshabangu’s gambit in 2023. Others point to internal failures: infighting, lack of strategy, and an inability to capitalize on public discontent. Whatever the cause, the effect is clear: Zimbabweans are left adrift, forced to choose between a regime that has failed them and a faction whose promises may prove equally hollow. The opposition’s absence is not just a political failure; it is a betrayal of a people crying out for a voice. Until that voice emerges—bold, united, and untainted by ZANU-PF’s machinations—Zimbabwe’s salvation will remain a distant dream, caught in the crossfire of a ruling party at war with itself. _*Harare City Council Vows To Demolish Unapproved Shopping Malls*_ The City of Harare has warned against illegal structures springing up across the city and vowed to demolish unauthorised developments. The rise of informal businesses has led to an increase in new constructions and the conversion of old buildings into retail spaces. Large commercial properties are being repurposed into shopping malls with subdivided units for multiple operators. While this has proven profitable for property owners, concerns about the legality of these developments are growing, with some lacking approval from city authorities. Harare City Council spokesperson Stanley Gama told Business Times that the municipality will take action against illegal structures and unlicensed operators. Said Gama: New malls or structures have to be approved and licensed by the City of Harare. Illegal structures will be demolished, while those operating without licences will have their businesses closed down. We don’t tolerate lawlessness. If the City of Harare follows through with its warnings, several newly established malls in the Central Business District may face demolition. City regulations require that any change in business use comply with Section 26 of the Regional, Town, and Country Planning Act (Chapter 29:12 of 1996), which mandates prior approval from the relevant authorities. An urban planning expert, who declined to be named, told Business Times, that the current increase in mall construction has largely been unregulated, with some developments not meeting the minimum operational standards required by law. Said the expert: There is an uncontrolled influx of retail spaces, and some of these structures obstruct pedestrian movement. The city was not designed to accommodate this level of commercial activity in such a disorganized manner. _*Two Pregnant Soldiers Among 200 South African Troops Returned From DRC*_ About 200 South African soldiers have returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In an interview with SABC News, Pikkie Greeff, the national secretary of the SA National Defence Union (SANDU), said the group included three critically injured soldiers, along with others who were sick, wounded, or dealing with family issues, such as the death of a loved one. Two pregnant officers were part of the returning group. Greeff said that soldiers cannot remain in an operational area while pregnant, though it was unlikely they were deployed while pregnant due to mandatory medical tests before deployment. Earlier this month, 14 SA National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers were killed, and many others were injured during clashes between M23 rebel forces and DRC government troops. Regarding the presence of South African soldiers in M23-controlled areas, Greeff revealed that sensitive negotiations were ongoing. Said Greeff, as quoted by TimesLive: We know their food supply, electricity, water and so on is subject to M23 control because they’re surrounded by them. They’re basically blocked inside their bases. It’s very frustrating and demoralising. I think the public should know our soldiers do have what it takes to sit it out. We’ll see how the negotiations go. I’m optimistic there will be a solution. SANDU expressed disappointment over the defence department’s lack of clear communication, adding that even the affected soldiers are not regularly updated on the situation or what the authorities are doing on their behalf. Said Greeff: We understand it’s sensitive and there’s a fine line to be walked. There’s so much uncertainty, especially with families and others asking questions that we feel that the department could have been a lot more expressive, reassuring the public that it is taking the necessary steps. The department remaining silent while questions mount by the day, it’s not helpful for the trust the public has in the defence force, for the family members and the soldiers. The soldiers themselves aren’t regularly updated on the situation and what the authorities are doing on their behalf. Over the weekend, 13 of the 14 SANDF soldiers killed in the DRC conflict were laid to rest in their hometowns. _*Betting Shops vs Betting Apps: Which Is Better in 2025?*_ We've all been there - standing in line at a betting shop, feeling the energy of the crowd, the buzz in the air. It really depends on what you're after. - Betting shops are for those who crave the social experience, the thrill of immediate cash in hand, and the nostalgia of a traditional betting environment. - Betting apps are for those who value convenience, 24/7 access, and a wider variety of markets. Plus, the chance to download Betway or similar apps gives you access to an entire betting world in your pocket. The winner? Well, it's clear that mobile betting is on the rise, and it's hard to ignore the convenience of betting apps. But hey, there will always be a special place in our hearts for the gritty, fast-paced energy of a betting shop. Whether you're a shop regular or an app enthusiast, you can't lose! _*South Africa launches countrywide blitz on illegal immigrants*_ South Africa has announced a nationwide campaign to flush out illegal immigrants, citing economic pressures likely to be worsened by recent sanctions imposed by Donald Trump's United States government. The operation, set to commence on March 1, 2025, aims to enforce the country's immigration laws and curb the presence of undocumented foreign nationals. In a statement dated February 25, 2025, South Africa's Home Affairs spokesperson, Siya Qoza, said the crackdown would primarily target illegal immigrants from Zimbabwe, Somalia, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Malawi. "The Department of Home Affairs, under the directive of the Honourable Minister, hereby informs all foreign nationals residing unlawfully in the Republic of South Africa of an impending national operation aimed at enforcing the country's immigration laws," the statement read. "Effective from 1 March 2025, the department, in collaboration with relevant law enforcement agencies, will commence a nationwide operation to identify, arrest, detain, and deport all illegal foreign nationals who are in contravention of the Immigration Act No. 13 of 2002. “Foreign nationals without valid documentation are strongly encouraged to regularise their stay or voluntarily depart the country before the commencement of the operation to avoid legal action. The Department of Home Affairs remains committed to a fair and lawful process and urges all stakeholders to respect the legal requirements governing residence and employment in South Africa." South Africa has long grappled with migration challenges, with thousands of illegal immigrants, particularly from Zimbabwe, continuously entering the country in search of economic opportunities and escaping political instability. According to 2019 statistics, South Africa was home to approximately 4.2 million international migrants, making up about 7.2% of the total population. Despite ongoing deportations, many undocumented immigrants manage to return, underscoring the complexities of border control and regional migration dynamics. The upcoming operation is expected to reignite debates on immigration policy and its economic and social implications, with concerns over potential xenophobic violence and strained diplomatic relations with neighboring countries. _*Trump2025 has ordered HIV projects in SA funded through USAID to shut down —immediately and permanently*_ US President Donald Trump ordered USAID-funded HIV organisations in SA to close down overnight. • Pepfar-funded HIV organisations in South Africa woke up to letters telling them their grants had been ended - permanently. • The letters tell them that "your award is not aligned with Agency priorities" and that "continuing this programme is not in the national interest". • The document also instructs them to "immediately cease all activities, terminate all subawards and contracts, and avoid incurring any additional obligations chargeable to the award beyond those unavoidable costs associated with this Termination Notice". Pepfar-funded HIV organisations in South Africa, who receive their funds through the United States Agency for International Development, USAID, woke up to letters that were sent overnight telling them their grants have been ended - permanently. Pepfar, the President's Emergency Plan for Aids, is a fund that was launched in 2003 to help fight Aids in countries with high HIV infection rates such as South Africa. The country has since received around $8 billion (about R145 billion) of which $439 537 828 (about R8.1 billion) was for the current US financial year, which stretches from 1 October 2024 to 30 September 2025. USAID funds 44 health projects in South Africa. USAID-funded district health projects, supported outside of Pepfar, but with other US government funds administered by USAID, have also been instructed to close down. The Anova Health Institute, the organisation in South Africa which receives the most Pepfar funding, lost all its funding, a senior Anova Health Institute official confirmed to Bhekisisa. Anova helped to test people for HIV and make treatment available in under-staffed government clinics. TB programmes funded through USAID also report having received such letters. Letters were also sent to partners of the Accelerating Programme Achievements to Control the Epidemic (Apace), which include large nonprofits such as the Wits Reproductive Health Institute, Broadreach Healthcare and Right to Care. The Apace projects conducted HIV testing, got people who tested positive onto treatment, got HIV-negative people who needed it onto preventive anti-HIV pills, increased children's access to HIV treatment and also tested and treated people for tuberculosis (TB), the most common illness that people with HIV get when not on treatment. It's not confirmed if all of the USAID-funded organisations received letters, but Bhekisisa has seen confirmation from several projects working on fighting HIV within key populations such as LGBTQI+ groups, and also those working with orphans and vulnerable children, to close down their projects immediately. South African organisations say they have also had reports from Pepfar-funded projects in Kenya and Malawi saying they had received similar letters. Some organisations received emails, with attached letters, which were signed off with "thank you for partnering with USAID and God Bless America" South African organisations say they have also had reports from Pepfar-funded projects in Kenya and Malawi saying they had received similar letters. Some organisations received emails, with attached letters, which were signed off with "thank you for partnering with USAID and God Bless America". The letters read as follows: Dear Implementing Partner, This award is being terminated for convenience and the interests of the U.S. Government pursuant to a directive from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in his capacity as the Acting Administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development ("the Agency" or "USAID") and/or Peter W. Marocco, who is performing the duties and functions of both Deputy Administrators for USAID. Secretary Rubio and PTDO Deputy Administrator Marocco have determined your award is not aligned with Agency priorities and made a determination that continuing this program is not in the national interest. The decision to terminate this individual award is a policy determination vested in the Acting Administrator and the person performing the duties and functions of the Deputy Administrator. I have been delegated authority to issue this termination notice. Detailed instructions will follow, and a formal modification/amendment to memorialize this action is forthcoming. Immediately cease all activities, terminate all subawards and contracts, and avoid incurring any additional obligations chargeable to the award beyond those unavoidable costs associated with this Termination Notice. Immediately provide similar instructions to all subrecipients and contractors. Kindly confirm receipt of this Termination Notice via electronic email response to the sender. From waivers to nothing The new Trump administration froze funding globally for all US-funded aid projects on 24 January. It then announced a limited waiver for some projects on 1 February. Earlier in February, USAID-funded projects in South Africa were asked to apply for 90-day limited waivers, which excluded all HIV prevention activities but most included treatment programmes. They were asked to resubmit work plans that adhered with the waiver rules and also to submit adjusted budgets. But no one had heard back. Instead, many projects received termination letters last night. Pepfar projects receiving their funds through the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are still operating. A federal judge ordered the Trump administration in February to allow CDC-funded projects to restart their original projects. But many say they've only received funds, so far, to operate until the end of March. Reaction from health experts in South Africa With the help of HIV activists, Bhekisisa is gathering responses to the Trump administration's abrupt cuts of USAID-funded HIV projects. The common theme? South Africa's national health department isn't providing the required leadership during this time, with hardly any communication to partners and the media. Yvette Raphael, co-founder and co-director Advocacy for Prevention of HIV and Aids (APHA) "We are deeply concerned about the bad decision to end USAID. The Trump administration has declared war on the right to health globally. The South African government must take this as an opportunity to expedite universal access to healthcare and meet its obligations to our people." Sibongile Tshabalala, chairperson Treatment Action Campaign chairperson "The NGO sector in South Africa woke to a letter from USAID terminating grants. It is so painful that these terminations mean death to poor people of the world. Key and vulnerable populations are the most affected. These terminations happen at a time when the whole world is bewildered by these outrageous decisions by the Trump administration. "While the Trump administration is fighting for a land Bill that has nothing to do with them and making noise about human rights violations, they are inadvertently committing genocide that will be remembered for years to come. "It is time for the world to speak up and call the Trump administration out for these unfair decisions. "We need our government to step up at this moment in time, we need to hold their feet to the fire. The government must act swiftly and come up with a plan to save lives." Linda-Gail Bekker, CEO of the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation "Saving dollars and spending lives - no words! We now really need to hear the plans from our country health departments how the chaos will be filled urgently." An HIV clinician, speaking anonymously, who has provided the health department with help in its clinics and hospital via Pepfar for 17 years said: "Government has to cease the inaction and their seeming return to the behaviour we saw during the worst years of Aids denialism, where politicians let their own opinions impact hundreds of thousands of lives. This cannot be allowed to happen again." "Eight million South Africans rely on the government's antiretroviral HIV treatment programme and although Pepfar-funded organisations may only account [along with the health department's Pepfar funds] for 17% of the budget, what they do with that 17% is so critical. "Without it, and without an urgent plan to fill the gap, there is no doubt deaths will increase, people will suffer, babies will get infected and die and the monitoring of the programme and its ability to improve and react will become utterly non-existent. "The SA government must now also be held to account to step in as we have seen with Nigeria and other African countries." Fatima Hassan, founder, Health Justice Initiative "One expects a greater sense of urgency and better communication from the health ministry and other departments including the presidency in this time of crisis. They are downplaying the financial and human impact in South Africa, and that will not take us forward. "As civil society we wrote in early February to the government, asking for its urgent plan, we got no response. We wrote again, and a month later we still await its urgent plan, which shockingly, we learnt from media reports that an assessment is being outsourced to Deloitte and will take a month or longer while right now there is a crisis! "We spent decades fighting and litigating for the human right to receive proper healthcare services for HIV especially. This is all going up in smoke because of the impact of the Trump administration’s ideological executive orders and actions and its own defiance of court orders in the US — and because our government has no urgent plan to absorb staff, programmes, patients and communities. "The impact is there for all to see — and frankly, one circular from the national health department which is not even being fully implemented, will not mitigate the chaos. Government should answer — where is the money and where is the plan?" Kholi Buthelezi, director, Sisonke "Sex workers are at increased risk for a range of health issues, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), TB, HIV, and violence-related injuries. In South Africa, access to regular health screenings, education, and preventive care should be a basic right, not a privilege. When a major funding partner like USAID pulls its support, the ripple effects are felt throughout the entire ecosystem of services designed to support these individuals. This is why the government must step up now." Anon HIV prevention programme implementer in Gauteng "Cutting USAID funding for health and education programmes in South Africa isn't just about budgets - it's about people. It's about sex workers who no longer have a safe place to get HIV prevention services, LGBTI+ communities losing the support they fought so hard for and thousands now facing a future without the healthcare and education they rely on to survive. "These aren't just numbers on a spreadsheet. They are lives, futures, and communities being abandoned. The reality is heart breaking: People will suffer, people will die, and decades of progress will be undone. "This is not just a funding cut - it's a betrayal of the very people these programmes were meant to protect. And yet, from the national health department, there is silence. No communication, no coordination, no urgency - just a deafening void where leadership should be. "The very institutions meant to protect the most vulnerable have offered no plan, no reassurance, no voice. How long must communities wait in fear? How many clinics must close before those in power acknowledge the crisis? This silence is complicity, and it is costing lives." Kate Rees, public health specialist "Our programmes have been officially terminated. Thousands of dedicated healthcare workers across South Africa have been retrenched. I am especially concerned for the community health workers and data capturers, who are financially vulnerable and won't be easily absorbed into the health system. "Despite their years of commitment, these healthcare workers have been abandoned with almost no notice. For patients and communities, critical services have already been impacted - including following up on positive HIV tests for babies, following up on possible meningitis cases, and caring for the most vulnerable pregnant women whose babies are now at risk of contracting HIV." Kholi Buthelezi, Sisonke "Sex workers are at increased risk for a range of health issues, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), TB, HIV, and violence-related injuries. In South Africa, access to regular health screenings, education, and preventive care should be a basic right, not a privilege. When a major funding partner like USAID pulls its support, the ripple effects are felt throughout the entire ecosystem of services designed to support these individuals. This is why the government must step up now." Public health specialist, anonymous "This is absolutely shattering, heartbreaking, and incomprehensible. The termination letters issued by the US state department in the last 24 hours mark the abrupt and devastating end to years - decades - of investment in lifesaving programmes that have transformed communities, saved countless lives, and built essential infrastructure for health, education, and development. "The intellectual capital, expertise, and dedication poured into these programmes have simply been erased by bureaucratic decisions made overnight. How do you quantify the loss of a child's access to malaria treatment? A mother's TB medication? A community's clean water project? "The people - the patients, the frontline workers, the programme recipients who relied on these services for survival - are now left stranded, abandoned by a system that once promised progress and partnership. "Every contract cancelled is not just a number; it represents a life, a community, a future now in jeopardy. The sheer disregard for the impact on millions of vulnerable people is unfathomable, and the ripple effects of these decisions will be felt for generations to come. _*Zimbabwe external trade statistics for January 2025*_ The total value of exported goods in January 2025 was USD 652.0 million, representing a 5.8 % decrease from USD 692.4 million reported in December 2024. The crux of the issue lies in the nature of his arrest and the context surrounding it. Mhlanga was taken into custody under what critics describe as dubious charges related to an interview he conducted with Blessed Geza, a controversial figure. The fundamental argument against his arrest is that it violates the principles of journalistic freedom. Mhlanga, as a journalist, was simply performing his duties by interviewing someone of public interest, which should not expose him to criminal liability for the statements made by his interviewee, Blessed Geza and his war vets. It is a well-established legal principle that journalists are not responsible for the opinions expressed by their sources. By arresting Mhlanga, the state appears to be sending a chilling message to other journalists, discouraging them from pursuing stories that may be politically sensitive. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. Moreover, the legitimacy of the charges against Mhlanga is called into question. Mhlanga is an employee of Alpha Media Holding (AMH) and critics point out that if those responsible for the production and broadcasting of the interview are not being prosecuted, the charges against Mhlanga seem to lack a solid legal foundation. This raises concerns about selective prosecution and the misuse of state power to target individuals for their professional activities. Mhlanga’s arrest has been described as a breach of the rule of law, particularly in a context where the presumption of innocence is a fundamental right. The state claims that Mhlanga amplified potentially criminal remarks made by his guest, yet this assertion hinges on the determination that the interviewee’s statements were indeed criminal, a determination that has not yet been made by a competent court. Until such a ruling occurs, any action against Mhlanga can be seen as premature and lacking legal basis. Furthermore, the state’s argument against granting him bail highlights the intent to intimidate rather than pursue justice. The equipment involved in the alleged offenses belongs to his employer, AMH, not to Mhlanga personally, suggesting that any liability should lie with the media organisation rather than the journalist. Blessed Mhlanga’s only “wrongdoing” appears to be exercising his rights as a journalist in a politically charged environment. His arrest is symptomatic of broader issues regarding press freedom and the rule of law in Zimbabwe, raising urgent questions about the safety and autonomy of journalists in the country. Are we going back to the Robert Mugabe era or was ED running the show all along. Engineer Jacob Kudzayi Mutisi _*Geza loses case*_ The State yesterday withdrew charges before a plea against former Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (Arda) chairman Basil Nyabadza, who is facing allegations of defrauding Mr Blessed Geza of US$1 362 000 in a land deal. Prosecutor Mr Anesu Chirenje told the court that he would summon back Nyabadza to court when Geza avails himself. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. Nyabadza opposed the withdrawal, saying charges should be read to him and the trial should open. However, the new magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei, who took over from Ms Tilda Mazhande after she recused herself in the morning concurred with the State and withdrew the charges before the plea. The difference is that a withdrawal before plea allows the evidence available to be reused in a subsequent trial, while a withdrawal after plea means an automatic acquittal and the evidence that was to be presented cannot be used again. Last week, Ms Mazhande put the State on notice that she would remove Nyabadza from remand yesterday if the complainant, Mr Geza, failed to appear in court. However, Ms Mazhande went on to recuse herself from the matter, citing personal reasons. It is the State’s case that Mr Geza bought 42,3504 hectares from Nyabadza for US$1 362 000 on October 29, 2020. The court heard that Mr Geza was granted sole authority to subdivide, develop, and sell the land. When the agreement of sale was done, Nyabadza allegedly misrepresented to Mr Geza that the land had title deeds which he would hand over in a month. However, he failed to deliver. It is alleged that while Mr Geza was in the process of obtaining subdivision permits for the land from the Department of Physical Planning in Mashonaland West, he discovered that Nyabadza had allegedly sold the same land to Velda Estates. The court heard that Mr Geza engaged Nyabadza hoping for an amicable solution, only to discover that his agreement of sale had been cancelled without his knowledge. The matter was reported to the police, leading to Nyabadza being summoned to the courts. Mr Geza was prejudiced of US$1 362 000 and nothing was recovered. Herald _*Mnangagwa To Meet War Vets After Dramatic Fallout*_ Details to follow… _*’We can come after you’: Roman Catholic-run St. Peter’s Kubatana Industrial Training College principal threatens anyone who continues to write articles about a messy sexual harassment scandal, allegedly involving learners and teachers*_ AN official at Roman Catholic-run St. Peter’s Kubatana Industrial Training College has threatened to come after anyone who continues to write articles about a messy sexual harassment scandal, alleged to involve learners and teachers. About three cases of sexual harassment are said to have been swept under the carpet in the past year, with the latest raising a storm for a lecturer identified as Kudakwashe Jongwe. A parent who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com narrated saddening exchanges between themselves and the institution’s Principal, a Mr Gatsi, whose institution they allege to be shielding teachers accused of sexually exploiting students. One Mlambo, who is the institution’s Acting Principal told this publication to drop the story as the Roman Catholic Church was too big and could come after the writer. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. “We can come for you, this is a big institution, this is the Roman Catholic,” said Mlambo in a conversation with this publication. “We don’t want to comment on this issue. Why do you want to write an article that is done? “If you were the police we would consider your questions but we do not want to speak about it, this matter is dead.” Jongwe, who politely told this publication that he had been barred from commenting on the issue by the institution, is said to have been sending sleazy messages to students and inviting them home for what he told a local daily were ‘extra lessons.’ The parent said he got wind of the act, confiscated their daughter’s phone and discovered the comments she said bordered on sexual harassment. “Jongwe has been harassing my daughter considering his love comments to her,” said the parent. “After taking our matter to the principal, he defended him and that angered me.” Jongwe is also accused of having taken the daughter for a questionable shopping spree against her parents’ will after they got wind of it. St. Peter’s Kubatana Industrial Training College is run by Roman Catholic Jesuits, a religious order of priests and brothers in the church. _*Such policies turned Zimbabwe into a basket case – Free Market Foundation slams DA over ‘liberal betrayal’ on Expropriation Act*_ South Africa – The Free Market Foundation (FMF) has said that the Democratic Alliance (DA) had only one role to play regarding the new Expropriation Act, which is “unconditional and unrelenting opposition”, but with the formation of the GNU, FMF said the party has allowed itself to be ideologically co-opted and has betrayed liberals. Martin van Staden, Head of Policy at the FMF, said in a statement issued on Tuesday that the DA has charted a different course, skirting around the act’s fundamental constitutional, economic, and moral deficiencies and focusing instead on some peripheral formalities. “This is a weak — and failed — attempt to show its constituency that it is still “against” the Expropriation Act while protecting its position in the government of national unity (GNU). “Liberalism’s value proposition is simple: individuals and communities — society — must chart their course. The state must secure society against coercion directed at people or their property. Beyond this, the state must be severely limited by constitutional law so it cannot utilise its incredible power to deprive society of civil liberty or property. “Since the establishment of the Progressive Party in 1959, followed by the Progressive Reform Party, Progressive Federal Party, the Democratic Party, and finally the DA, the DA has been the foremost representative of this political ideology in SA. However, with the formation of the GNU, the party has allowed itself to be ideologically co-opted.” Van Staden added that co-option does not always mean sharing the precise philosophical imperatives of the co-opted, arguing that the DA is not yet a Marxist-Leninist party such as the ANC. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. “US President Donald Trump, in his usual unrefined fashion, did SA an excellent service by speaking out in favour of property ownership. He pointed out that property confiscation is now law in SA, that a class of people in SA — property owners — is being badly mistreated, and that this amounts to a human rights violation. On all counts, like him or not, Trump is right. “And yet the DA, among the regime’s usual cheerleaders in the media and academia, felt compelled to condemn Trump for speaking the truth rather than condemn Parliament and President Cyril Ramaphosa for adopting the kinds of policies that have turned relatively prosperous societies such as Zimbabwe and Venezuela into humanitarian disasters and basket cases,” he said. The FMF said the DA has been advised repeatedly and in excruciating detail about the constitutional and constitutionalist errors in the Expropriation Act. “Truthfully, this should have been the final “red line” for the GNU… “It is a betrayal that liberals and those who understand the key role property rights play in safeguarding freedom and democracy and creating the conditions for prosperity should not soon forgive the party for. The DA was supposed to be part of the solution, not part of the problem,” read the FMF statement. Approached for comment, the DA dismissed the FMF statement alleging the party has been co-opted by the ANC and betrayed its supporters on the Expropriation Act. The party’s national spokesperson, Karabo Khakhau, said she is unsure what informed the FMF statement before dismissing it as “baseless”. “Anyone with their finger on the pulse of South African politics would know that the DA has submitted court papers challenging the Act. “We are fundamentally opposed to the Act, in principle, because it opens the door to potential abuse through expropriation without compensation, which threatens property rights. Section 12 of the Act is particularly problematic. “Our legal advice is that the best chance of getting a straightforward victory is to tackle the patently unconstitutional process by which it was passed. Khakhau mentioned that even if the FMF had fundamental constitutional objections to a piece of legislation, the best court strategy would provide the best chance of victory. _*ZWG month-on-month inflation rate recedes to 0,5% – ZimStat*_ The month-on-month inflation rate has tumbled to 0,5%, giving strong signals of a positive inflationary outlook in the year ahead, Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) reported Wednesday. The stats agency said the inflation rate for the local unit tumbled to 0.5% in February 2025, shedding 10.0% on the January 2025 rate of 10,5% implying that prices as measured by the all items ZWG CPI, increased by an average of 0.5% from January 2025 to February 2025. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. “The ZWG month-on-month Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages inflation rate was 0.8 percent in February 2025, shedding 6.0 percentage points on the January 2025 rate of 6.8 percent while the month-on-month non-food inflation rate was 0.3 % shedding 4,3% on the January 2025 rate of 4,6%,” said Zimsat. Market watchers have credited the latest recovery to the tight Monetary Policy stance pursued by monetary authorities but warned that such economic trends could be signals of deeper problems in the economy such as reduced productive borrowing, and disposable incomes prompting very slow economic growth. The policy measures, if not well managed, can also choke companies’ capability to invest in new projects. Zimstat said the US$ month-on-month inflation rate for the period stood at 0,2% in February 2025, shedding 11.3% on the January 2025 rate of 11,5% implying that prices as measured by the all items index increased by an average of 0,2% from January 2025 to February 2025. The USD month-on-month Food and NonAlcoholic Beverages inflation rate was 0,2% in February 2025, shedding 16.6% on the January 2025 rate of 16,8%. The February 2025 USD month-on-month non-food inflation rate was 0.2 % shedding 8,9% on the January 2025 rate of 9,1%. The USD year-on-year inflation rate (annual percentage change) for the month of February 2025 as measured by the all-items USD Consumer Price Index (CPI), was 15.1%. _*Govt exchange rate distortions cost market US$4,5bn*_ THE World Bank has revealed that Zimbabwe’s Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion ministry and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) exchange rate policy distortions cost the market US$4,5 billion between 2020 and 2023. During the period, both Treasury and the RBZ implemented policies that controlled the exchange rate, creating a premium that averaged over 50% between itself and the parallel market. These distortions ultimately led to the demise of the Zimbabwe dollar, for the adoption of the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency in April 2024. However, the same hawkish policies from the RBZ and Treasury that caused massive losses from the market are mostly still in place, with some new stringent measures added. Consequently, an exchange rate premium of over 30% has emerged between the official and parallel foreign currency exchange rates. “Policies that stabilise prices and remove exchange rate distortions will significantly and quickly strengthen government revenue. World Bank analysis suggests that between 2020 and 2023, Zimbabwe’s Treasury lost over US$4,5 billion, or 2,5% of GDP [gross domestic product], due to its monetary and exchange rate policy distortions,” the World Bank said in a statement attached to its new Zimbabwe Public Finance Review report. “The biggest loss comes from inflation-related tax losses (US$1,4 billion), informalisation (US$1,2 billion) and customs duty foregone (US$580 million). In absence of such distortions, tax revenue in 2023 could have been as high as 18,9% of GDP, compared to 14,6% of GDP observed.” The global bank said its new report comes at a critical time, as it was seeking to support the government’s task of fiscal consolidation by identifying policy options to help expenditure rationalisation and revenue mobilisation. “This can help to create fiscal space and move Zimbabwe onto a more sustainable fiscal pathway,” the World Bank said. “In turn, prudent fiscal policy will help to stabilise the macroeconomic environment by providing an anchor for price and exchange rate stability, bolstering economic growth and job creation.” The bank commended the government for recently embarking upon an important set of reforms aimed at moving beyond Zimbabwe’s history of macroeconomic instability. _*United Nations Human Rights Council: Zimbabwe hailed for abolishing death penalty*_ COUNTRIES attending the ongoing 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council have saluted Zimbabwe for successfully abolishing the death penalty. Speaking at the high-level convention, Zimbabwe’s Attorney General Virginia Mabiza chronicled the country’s journey in ending the death penalty which was introduced by British colonial powers and remained in place even beyond the attainment of Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980. She said at independence, Zimbabwe inherited a wide array of offences that attracted the death penalty and since then, various legislative and policy interventions have been implemented to gradually reduce the number of crimes attracting the death penalty. In 2013, the number of offences attracting the death penalty had been reduced from nine to only murder committed in aggravating circumstances in sync with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 52 on reducing the number of offences that attract the death penalty. The Death Penalty Abolition Act [Chapter 9:26] outlawed the imposition of the Death Penalty. “It further placed a positive legal obligation on the Minister responsible for Justice, the Prosecutor General and the Commissioner General of Prisons to do everything within their respective competencies to ensure every prisoner under the sentence of death is brought before the High Court for resentencing,” Mabiza told the gathering. Maxime Prevot, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation, speaking on behalf of the core group on the question of the death penalty (Belgium, Benin, Costa Rica, France, Mexico, Mongolia, Republic of Moldova, and Switzerland), hailed the recent decision of Zimbabwe to abolish the death penalty and encouraged other states to follow suit, or, pending its abolition, to impose a moratorium on its use. Switzerland welcomed Mabiza’s presence at the Human Rights Council and congratulated Zimbabwe for the major step in the protection of human rights. The High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk observed that 113 countries have abolished the death penalty completely. He commended the Zimbabwean government for joining 26 other countries in Africa that have abolished the death penalty. _*MH370: search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight resumes after 11 years*_ A new search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has been launched more than a decade after the plane went missing in one of aviation’s greatest enduring mysteries. Maritime exploration firm Ocean Infinity has resumed the hunt for the missing plane, Malaysian transport minister Anthony Loke said on Tuesday. Loke told reporters the contract details between Malaysia and the firm were still being finalised but welcomed “the proactiveness of Ocean Infinity to deploy their ships” to begin the search for the plane, which went missing in March 2014. Details about how long the search would last had not been negotiated yet, he said. He also did not provide details about when exactly the British firm had restarted its hunt. MH370’s disappeared from radar shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur airport in March 2014. It was bound for Beijing, with 12 crew and 227 passengers on board. The plane has never been found, and the reason for its disappearance is unknown. “We’re very relieved and pleased that the search is resuming once again after such a long hiatus,” Malaysian Grace Nathan, 36, who lost her mother on the doomed jet, told AFP. Jaquita Gonzales, 62, wife of MH370 flight supervisor Patrick Gomes, said she hoped the resumption of the search would bring her family much-needed closure. “We just want to know where it is and what happened,” she said. “Memories come back like yesterday, it’s fresh in our heads.” Marine tracking website Marinetraffic.com showed that the Ocean Infinity vessel was in the south Indian ocean as of 23 February. Malaysia agreed to resume the search in December 2024, with Ocean Infinity conducting the search on a “no-find-no-fee” basis. Loke said the government would sign a contract for 18 months, in return for which Ocean Infinity would receive $70m if the wreckage was located and verified. The search would cover 15,000 sq km, Loke said. On 8 March 2024, on the tenth anniversary of the disappearance, Australia offered the Malaysian government support for a renewed search. Eight Australians were on board the flight. But on Tuesday a spokesperson for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau said that Australian authorities were not involved in the renewed search. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. Flight MH370, a B777-200 aircraft, departed Kuala Lumpur at 12.41am local time on 8 March 2-14, bound for Beijing. The plane was last seen on military radar at 2.14am, heading west over the strait of Malacca. Half an hour later, the airline announced it had lost contact with the plane, which was due to land at its destination about 6.30am. The families of those on board are still waiting for answers about what happened to their loved ones. Some travelled to Madagascar in 2016 to comb the beaches there for debris: pieces of the plane had been found off the Tanzanian and Mozambican coasts. In January 2017, after nearly three years of searching 120,000 sq km in the southern Indian Ocean, Australian authorities ended the underwater hunt for the wreckage. On 3 October that year, Australian investigators delivered their final report on the disappearance, saying the inability to bring closure for victims’ families was a “great tragedy” and “almost inconceivable” in the modern age. Among the questions that remain is why the plane made a seemingly controlled turn off course towards the Indian ocean and, critically, why two pieces of key communication and tracking equipment on the plane went silent. Theories of what happened have ranged from a pilot “gone rogue” to sabotage and conspiracies that the flight was shot down or “disappeared” by a nefarious government agency and landed at a dark site, either because of sensitive cargo or a politically significant passenger. Data recovered from a home-built flight simulator owned by the pilot, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, showed that someone had plotted a course to the southern Indian Ocean. Ocean Infinity, based in Britain and the United States, carried out an unsuccessful hunt in 2018. _*Four cops convicted for taking US$60 weekly bribe from motorist for two years*_ Two Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) cops stationed at Chinhoyi Traffic have been found guilty of soliciting a weekly US$60 bribe from a transport operator in exchange for free passage. The two are Desire Mangombe (30) and Macdonald Tapesa (32). They however escaped a custodial sentence after they were ordered to perform 490 hours each of community service. “From January 2022, the officers allegedly extorted bribes from Tafadzwa Bvunzawabaya, a manager at Wolfspack Transport Services. On September 15, 2022, a team from Police General Headquarters Harare set up a trap operation using marked US dollar notes. “The officers accepted the bribe at their station, leading to their immediate arrest and recovery of the trap money,” the State proved. Both officers were convicted of contravening Section 174(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act. In a different matter two Mbare police officers Naume Dube (31) and Victoria Shonhiwa (36), both constables, were convicted of criminal abuse of duty after soliciting US$1 from every motorist passing through the police station’s main gate on March 11, 2024. Following a tip-off, officers from the Internal Investigations Department conducted surveillance and observed the two officers accepting bribes. “Dube was found with US$80 in her shirt pockets, and Shonhiwa had US$40. “They also recovered a list of motor vehicle registration numbers. The officers were arrested and handed over to the Police Anti-Corruption Unit. _*Zimbabwe could clear arrears with bold reforms, World Bank says*_ Zimbabwe could clear its arrears and rework $21 billion in debt that’s kept it locked out of international capital markets for more than a quarter of a century if it implements fiscal reforms, the World Bank said. “By adopting a bold set of fiscal reforms, it can turn the page on a prolonged history of macroeconomic instability, and set the foundations for a credible national budget that is efficient, able to manage unforeseen fiscal risks, and can ensure a stable and competitive currency,” the World Bank said in its review of Zimbabwe’s public finances on Wednesday. “In turn, this would open up the historic possibility of arrears’ clearance and debt resolution, which would release major additional resources in concessional multilateral financing for public and private investments.” It would also put Zimbabwe on a high-growth path and a more stable macroeconomic trajectory, the Washington-based lender said. The southern African nation defaulted on debt from lenders such as the World Bank, the Paris Club and the African Development Bank in 1999. In the past three years, it’s made concerted efforts to exit default. It’s enlisted AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina and former Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano to negotiate with creditors, hired Global Sovereign Advisory, a Paris-based consultancy, and started paying reparations to farmers and nations whose land it seized in the 2000s. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. Changes the World Bank recommends include removing monetary and exchange-rate distortions to enable low and stable inflation, reducing the public-service wage bill by eliminating duplicate and redundant roles and doing away with value-added tax exemptions and zero-rating to increase revenues. The nation introduced the ZiG, short for Zimbabwe Gold, in April last year to eventually replace the dollar in local transactions. Multiple previous attempts at creating a local unit have failed and led to spiralling inflation. The central bank has introduced a plethora of steps to support the ZiG including curbing the money supply and forcing companies to price their products in the local currency, favouring the informal sector that sells goods at the higher unofficial exchange rate. The World Bank also urged Zimbabwe to reverse the trend toward informalization by removing macroeconomic obstacles, high compliance burden for small businesses and taxing formal transactions. _*All broadcasting licence holders must be citizens: Minister Muswere*_ Directors of broadcasting entities in Zimbabwe and all broadcasting licence holders will all have to be citizens as under the present law, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere told the National Assembly yesterday. He said this while responding to issues raised by parliamentarians during the Second Reading debate of the Broadcasting Services Amendment Bill. “I will move to the second issue that allows up to 40 percent in terms of foreign ownership in broadcasting licences, which has a lot of impact in terms of local media control. “We have taken note of this, and as I’ve already indicated, that there will not be any changes to the particular section. It will remain as it is to the effect that no person, rather than the citizen of Zimbabwe, shall be director of a licensee. This relates to the territorial integrity in the governance of the nation, in that media sovereignty is very key. What we broadcast relates to what we have. The media sector is a very sensitive security issue, which can create a lot of instability in any nation. So, by virtue of that, there won’t be any amendments to this particular section.” State Media _*Zim’s brick manufacturing industry in crisis as Chinese dominance grows*_ This stark reality was laid bare by Kipson Gundani, Chief Executive Officer of Africa Roundtable, during the National Competitiveness Commission’s Inaugural Competitive Summit held last week in Bulawayo. Gundani lamented the decline of local brick manufacturers, attributing their struggles to outdated technology, lack of investment, and an uncompetitive macroeconomic environment. Zimbabwe was once home to three major local brick manufacturers but the industry has seen one company fold, leaving only two struggling players. These remaining manufacturers are further hamstrung by their inability to operate during the rainy season due to outdated equipment and technologies. In contrast, over ten Chinese-owned brick manufacturers have entered the market, leveraging advanced technology and efficient production methods to dominate the sector. While Chinese companies can produce bricks on demand, local manufacturers often require customers to wait up to three months for their orders to be fulfilled. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. “Competitiveness presupposes that there is efficiency,” Gundani said during his address on industry and business perspectives on competitiveness. “For you to be competitive, you have to be efficient. You have to be producing the right product at the least possible price.” Gundani said local manufacturers are unable to compete due to a lack of investment in retooling and modernisation. Many are still using equipment from the 1970s and 1980s, a legacy of Zimbabwe’s prolonged economic decline and the absence of productive financing in the market. Gundani highlighted the financial challenges facing local manufacturers, noting that some require US$5 million to retool and modernise their operations. However, accessing credit at reasonable interest rates is nearly impossible in Zimbabwe’s current economic climate. With interest rates exceeding 20 percent, borrowing for retooling purposes is simply not viable for most businesses. “You cannot even get margins in terms of profits that can beat that,” Gundani said. “So it defeats the whole purpose of borrowing in the first place.” Gundani explained how the technological gap between Chinese and local manufacturers is another critical factor where Chinese companies have invested heavily in advanced manufacturing techniques, allowing them to produce bricks quickly and efficiently. In contrast, local manufacturers rely on labour-intensive methods that are both slower and more costly, which slow down competitiveness. “It helps significantly leapfrog and be competitive if we use the right technologies,” Gundani said. “No local manufacturer at the moment, brick manufacturers, can compete with the Chinese because they are using top-notch technologies. They can produce whilst you are waiting for your bricks. But if you look at the other brick manufacturers, probably, you pay now and wait for three months for those bricks to be delivered.” According to Gundani, the pricing problem extends beyond the cost of credit while other chief economists like Christopher Mugaga from the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce and Cornelius Dube from the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries said Zimbabwe’s macroeconomic environment is characterised by high inflation, currency instability, and a lack of confidence in the financial system. These factors have created a vicious cycle that undermines competitiveness, with Gundani citing how the high cost of transporting goods due to the dilapidated state of the country’s rail network adds another layer of inefficiency. “It actually costs seven times cheaper to transport goods by rail compared to roads. If you look at the capacity of our NRZ and the lack of investment in that crucial national asset, you discover we are actually incurring more costs in moving goods across the country than we ought to be,” he said. “This can be resolved by simply having a functional rail system in this country.” The decline of local brick manufacturers has broader implications for Zimbabwe’s economy. With local manufacturers struggling to compete, this has led to job losses and a decline in the formal sector, worsening Zimbabwe’s already high levels of unemployment and informalisation. Gundani warned the growth of the informal sector is a symptom of deeper structural issues in the economy. “Informalisation is on the growth, and there’s no debate about that,” he said. “What we are also seeing is a tacit agreement by the Treasury to say the informal sector is growing as evidenced by following them through and trying to extract a few dollars through some taxes that the Treasury is introducing.” However, Gundani argued taxing the informal sector is not a sustainable solution. Instead, he called for a reduction in taxes and a focus on creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. “Cut the cloth, reduce the taxes, allow the private informal sector to grow, and also incentivise those who have the capacity in the informal to form,” he said. By lowering the tax burden and providing access to formal value chains, the government could encourage informal businesses to formalise and contribute to the economy in a meaningful way. Gundani’s address at the summit served as a wake-up call for policymakers and industry stakeholders. “We need to allow the laws of economics to take place,” he said. “That is, allow the market to function. And you can only intervene when there is failure.” This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. _*Siri’s Got Jokes: Apple’s Dictation Thinks “Racist” Means “Trump”*_ You cannot make this up. Apple has acknowledged a bug in its iPhone dictation feature that caused the word “racist” to be transcribed as “Trump.” However, “Trump” did not appear every time you said “racist.” The voice-to-text feature also wrote words like “Reinhold” and “you” when a user said “racist,” as per Fox’s testing. Most of the time, the feature accurately wrote “racist.” Apple’s iPhone dictation bug that transcribed “racist” as “Trump” quickly went viral, and you can’t help but think about AI bias, software glitches, and political symbolism. What’s crazy is that some users on social media found it hilarious, with some jokingly praising Apple for making Siri “smarter.” I’d only add that making Siri smarter is child’s play—that thing is ridiculously dumb. Some people celebrated the glitch as an “accidental truth,” while others wrote things like, “Apple Intelligence is real! No mistakes found here.” I found this one particularly interesting: “‘Bug’… some programmer out there is doing God’s work. This was intentional, and it’s a delight.” Yeah, we can all agree that it’s highly unlikely this is a bug. This has rogue (or maybe not rogue) programmer prank written all over it. Hence, others criticized Apple for what they saw as an example of AI bias, either intentional or unintentional. Apple responded by saying: We are aware of an issue with the speech recognition model that powers dictation, and we are rolling out a fix as soon as possible. Fox adds, “Apple says that the speech recognition models that power dictation may temporarily display words with some phonetic overlap before landing on the correct word. The bug affects other words with an ‘r’ consonant when dictated, Apple says.” I’m not sure I buy the phonetic overlap theory. An expert, John Burkey, the founder of Wonderrush.ai and a former member of Apple’s Siri team, explains what’s likely going on. The New York Times wrote: But he said that it was unlikely that the data Apple has collected for its artificial intelligence offerings was causing the problem, and the word correcting itself was likely an indication that the issue was not just technical. Instead, he said, there was probably software code somewhere on Apple’s systems that caused iPhones to write the word ‘Trump’ when someone said ‘racist.’ This smells like a serious prank,” Mr. Burkey said. “The only question is: Did someone slip this into the data or slip it into the code? This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. Why This Is Bigger Than ‘Just a Prank’ This case highlights concerns about AI neutrality. If a dictation model makes politically charged substitutions like the one above—whether accidental or systemic—it can fuel distrust in tech companies, which is already low, if I may add. It also raises a more important question: What other biases might be present in AI systems that aren’t as immediately noticeable? I think this whole debacle mainly affects trust in AI. Users might question whether tech companies are embedding political biases into their products. To be frank, we have seen too many examples of this kind of bias, and it always swings one way—which is understandable because most Big Tech employees have the same political beliefs and live in areas with the same. It is only natural that some of their biases will make it into the AI products they produce. Apple’s quick response to fix the bug is a positive step, but this incident reveals a larger issue: the responsibility of tech companies to ensure AI remains fair and unbiased. As artificial intelligence becomes part and parcel of our daily lives, ensuring transparency in how these systems are trained and monitored becomes paramount. On the surface, Apple’s dictation bug is an amusing, shareable glitch. But beneath the surface, it’s a reminder that AI—whether through accidental errors or deeper biases—has real-world consequences. The reactions to this incident reveal how people interpret AI mistakes through their own ideological lenses. If it supports my beliefs, whatever the glitch or bias, it’s funny. If it spews what I consider harmful to my way of thinking, then it’s no laughing matter. The ball is in Big Tech’s court to make sure AI is neutral and reliable. It’s going to be a tougher test than we would have imagined. _*Jose Mourinho racism probe: Didier Drogba defends ex-manager*_ Former Chelsea and Galatasaray striker Didier Drogba weighed in on the racism row involving his old coach Jose Mourinho on Wednesday, saying the Portuguese coach "is not a racist and history is there to prove it." Mourinho, who coaches Fenerbahce in Turkey, was accused by Galatasaray of making racist comments after a 0-0 draw between the rivals teams that was refereed by a Slovenian official on Monday. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. Mourinho was asked about a challenge early in the match and said a Turkish referee would have reacted with a yellow card "after the big dive and their [Galatasaray's] bench jumping around like monkeys." Galatasaray said they planned to start criminal proceedings against Mourinho, citing "racist statements," and filed complaints with football's governing bodies. A day later, Fenerbahce rejected the accusation, saying the remarks had nothing to do with racism and were "deliberately taken entirely out of context and distorted in a misleading manner." The club said it was planning to take a legal action "against this baseless accusation." In a post on social media platform X, Drogba -- who played under Mourinho at Chelsea in two separate spells -- said he had seen the comments about his former coach. "Trust me when I tell you I have known Jose for 25 years and he is not a racist and history [past and recent] is there to prove it," Drogba, who is Black, wrote. "Let's focus on our games, support our brilliant lions and let's win the league." Drogba added: "How can my 'Dad' be a racist. Come on guys." The Turkish football federation's disciplinary board is expected to make an announcement on the incident in the coming days. *IGNITE SPORT* _*Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle: League leaders breeze to win to extend lead to 13 points*_ As news of Arsenal's goalless draw with Nottingham Forest filtered through to Anfield, the Kop launched into a rousing rendition of "We're Gonna Win The League." With Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Newcastle United moving the Reds 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table on Wednesday night, it now seems as if it's a matter of when, rather than if, that prophecy is fulfilled. There may still be more than a quarter of the season left to play, but there was already a celebratory atmosphere on Merseyside as goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister helped Arne Slot's side brush aside Eddie Howe's men with all the style and swagger of champions-elect. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. Slot watched the contest from the director's box, having been served with a two-match touchline ban by the Football Association after his red card in the Merseyside derby on Feb. 12. But while there was a change of personnel in the dugout -- assistant coach and former Everton defender John Heitinga deputised in Slot's absence -- there was no drop-off in performance on the pitch. From the first whistle, Liverpool looked in control, with their opponent blunted by the absence of in-form striker Alexander Isak. The hosts took the lead inside 11 minutes when Szoboszlai's tame finish wriggled under Nick Pope after a fine run down the left from the lively Luis Díaz. Callum Wilson, making his first Premier League start of the season for Newcastle, spurned a glorious chance to restore parity after being played through on goal later in the first half, but his effort curled agonisingly wide of the post. It only helped to reinforce the notion that this was Liverpool's night, and so it proved when Mac Allister made sure of the victory after the break. The Argentina international curled brilliantly past Pope after some nifty footwork from Mohamed Salah who, even without scoring, caused plenty of problems for the Newcastle defence. Ahead of the match, Slot had urged supporters to keep their expectations high. "We do not just want you to dream, we need you to dream," the Dutchman wrote in his programme notes. "This is a big part of what makes this club so special because it challenges the players and the staff to do everything that we possibly can to be the best that we can be." Certainly, there could be no denying supporters were in dreamland on Wednesday night as they rattled through the Liverpool songbook, delivering lung-busting choruses of "And Now You're Gonna Believe Us" and "Hand It Over, Manchester." Newcastle's visit to Anfield marked the end of a gruelling run of five games in 15 days for Liverpool. For weeks, this spell has been billed as the stretch in which the title would be won or lost, and, having picked up 11 points from a possible 15, the prospect of Slot's side delivering a record-equaling 20th league title this term now seems likelier than ever. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. And now you're gonna believe us? Surely now, there can be no doubting that this is Liverpool's year. -- Beth Lindop _*Nottingham Forest 0-0 Arsenal: Gunners' title push fizzles out thanks to same old mistakes*_ Arsenal have turned into one of those Christmas toys when the batteries start to run out. They go round and round in circles, doing the same thing over again until they hit the wall and fizzle out completely. That's where Mikel Arteta's Gunners are in this season's Premier League title race. Saturday's 1-0 home defeat against West Ham United was a huge blow to their hopes of catching leaders Liverpool, but after failing to score again in a 0-0 draw against third-place Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, Arsenal can forget about the title for another year -- just as they have had to do every year for the past two decades. Nobody can deny that injuries have bitten hard into Arteta's squad and left them with almost nothing in the attacking department. Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are both out until next season with long-term injuries and Bukayo Saka is unlikely to return from his three-month layoff until after the March international break. But after enjoying 65% possession against Forest, Arsenal managed only one effort on target and it was painful to watch Arteta's side perform like a blunt object as they attempted to keep their faint title hopes alive by winning the game. In the absence of Havertz, Jesus and Saka, Arteta is deploying midfielder Mikel Merino as a false nine, but the Spain international spent enough of the game far enough forward to be classed as a centre-forward. But Arsenal's tactics remained the same: pass, pass, pass, usually sideways, and then hope for a corner from which to exploit their apparent expertise in the set-piece department. Merino's aerial ability is no secret, but Arsenal continued to play the ball on the ground and refused to go direct to find the breakthrough. Their passing wasn't working and Forest comfortably dealt with every one of Arsenal's 11 corners, so where was the variety? This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. Arteta has done an incredible job reviving Arsenal during his five years in charge -- the Gunners were drifting into obscurity when he arrived -- but they seem to have hit an impasse. The Spaniard needs to find a way to make things happen as the top coaches do. He needs to be more pragmatic and more willing to abandon his principles when the circumstances dictate. But there is no sign of that happening and Arsenal are drifting out of the title race and could even be in danger of being dragged into a fight for a UEFA Champions League spot if they are unable to escape their malaise. With the fifth position likely to be enough for a Champions League spot in the Premier League to secure a UCL berth, Arsenal's 10-point cushion should be enough to keep sixth-place Newcastle at bay. But it's the 13-point gap between themselves and leaders Liverpool that should concern them most as Arsenal should never have been so far behind the pacesetters this season. -- Mark Ogden _*Tottenham 0-1 Manchester City: Haaland back on the scoresheet*_ Where there's Haaland, there's hope. It took Erling Haaland just 12 minutes to score on his return to the starting lineup as Manchester City edged past Spurs 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to move back into the top four. The Norway international's 28th goal of the season in all competitions was a typically clinical finish, dispatching Jérémy Doku's cross inside Guglielmo Vicario's near post. It was, in truth, the only sign of clinical finishing on show all evening as City spurned a raft of chances to put this game to bed before half-time with Savinho the biggest culprit -- and Haaland himself could not beat Vicario from six yards with the goal at his mercy at the half-hour mark. Ultimately -- after another nervy second-half showing from City -- it did not matter. Haaland's 20th Premier League goal of the season made him the second player to surpass that figure in his first three seasons. Ruud Van Nistelrooy did so for Manchester United from 2001 to 2004. He also equalled Harry Kane's record of scoring 10 or more goals at home and 10 or more away across three consecutive seasons. Haaland obviously gives City greater potency in their attack but his contribution was still not enough to mask the fragility that has become a feature of their football in recent months. Spurs were dreadful in the first half but gradually roused themselves as the second period wore on with Pep Guardiola reduced to crouching on one knee in the technical area in hope rather than expectation that his team would repel the home side. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. There might come a point when manager Ange Postecoglou -- as much as he would probably not admit it -- will prioritise the Europa League over the Premier League given they are languishing in 13th place -- and perhaps in hindsight, this was it. Starting without Dejan Kulusevski, Son Heung-min and Djed Spence -- their three best players against Ipswich Town last weekend -- was to manage their load for the weeks ahead rather than in a sincere belief the starting lineup he selected was the strongest available. That rotation no doubt contributed to the slow start and, as has often been the case this season, they left it too late to rally. Haaland almost had the final word, scoring in stoppage time with a powerful run and finish only for the officials to rule he had handled in the build-up. There was still time for City to implode. Spurs raced up the field and substitute Pape Matar Sarr headed over from close range with Guardiola almost in disbelief on the sidelines. Instead, Haaland was the match-winner and City were able to solidify their position in the Champions League spots ahead of Saturday's FA Cup fifth-round game against Plymouth Argyle. -- James Olley _*Manchester United 3-2 Ipswich Town: Pressure growing to drop Onana after another chaotic game*_ It was a big win for Manchester United against Ipswich Town, particularly after conceding an early goal and playing for more than 45 minutes with 10 men. But if the pressure on Ruben Amorim has eased ever so slightly, it's ramping up on André Onana. The goalkeeper played his part in Jaden Philogene's opener after only four minutes when his miscommunication with Patrick Dorgu led to the simplest of chances. Ipswich's second goal wasn't much better. Philogene whipped in a hopeful cross from the right and Onana was left stationary as it drifted into the far corner without a touch from anyone. It's a familiar story. Abdoulaye Doucouré was able to score for Everton on Saturday after Onana could only parry a shot into the air. A similar situation led to Everton's penalty -- eventually overturned -- in stoppage time and Tottenham's winner a week earlier. This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production. With United holding on against Ipswich, Onana punted a goal kick straight down the middle of the pitch. As it landed at the feet of an Ipswich defender, inviting another attack, both Amorim and Bruno Fernandes threw their hands into the air. It was another poor decision on a night of poor decisions. There's growing clamour to drop Onana. It will increase further after his performance against Ipswich, but it's unlikely Amorim will act. Second choice Altay Bayindir is injured and hasn't featured in the matchday squad since a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at the beginning of February. Amorim named two young goalkeepers on the bench against Ipswich -- Elyh Harrison and Hubert Graczyk -- but neither of them are ready for first-team football. It's possible Bayindir could be in goal for the FA Cup tie against Fulham on Saturday after being promised he would play in the cup games at the start of the season by former boss Erik ten Hag, but it will depend on the Turkey international proving his fitness in the next three days. The more likely scenario is that Onana continues, and United fans continue to feel nerves anytime the ball goes near him. At least the mood around the club will brighten after just their second home league win of 2025. Fernandes impressed again in midfield and all three United goals came from his set pieces. Two from corners and one from a free kick. United's past six goals have all come from Fernandes set pieces. It's a vital tool, especially when they're struggling to create clear-cut chances from open play. It was another frustrating night for Rasmus Højlund and Dorgu is facing a suspension following his red card. Along with Onana's form, there are still plenty of problems for Amorim to solve. But he will enjoy his drive in Carrington a little more Thursday morning after watching his team come up with a battling performance in a game they had to win. Moving up to 14th in the table isn't much to celebrate, but it's at least a step in the right direction. -- Rob Dawson _*Nunez among Atletico targets*_ Atletico Madrid are on the hunt for a new striker in the summer and one of their transfer targets is Liverpool's Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez, 25 Ignite Media Zimbabwe sports tit bits: *Liverpool will only sell Nunez in the summer if they bring in a replacement, with Brighton's Brazil striker Joao Pedro, 23, one name on their radar* *Brazil forward Vinicius Jr will have the chance to make a £200m move to the Saudi Pro League in the summer when the 24-year-old will have two years left on his Real Madrid contract* *Tottenham could make a move for Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze in the summer after becoming a "concrete option" for the England winger, 26* *Manchester United will have to pay a total of £20m to head coach Ruben Amorim and his backroom staff if the club chooses to sack them* This is an Ignite Media Zimbabwe news production.

Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”* — James 1:22_ _The Bible is the source of some of the most famous quotes in all of literature. “A fool and his money are soon parted” comes from Proverbs 21:20. “A house divided against itself cannot stand,” which was quoted by Abraham Lincoln in a speech on the eve of the Civil War, comes from Matthew 12:25. “Go the extra mile” comes from Matthew 5:41. And “You reap what you sow” comes from Galatians 6:7._ _God’s Word also contains some of the most familiar stories ever written. Even people who have never cracked the spine of a Bible can tell you about Noah’s Ark, David and Goliath, Daniel in the lion’s den, or Hezekiah’s purification of the temple (okay, maybe not that one)._ _There’s a lot to admire in the Bible. But God doesn’t want us to be admirers of His Word. He doesn’t want us to be appreciators or bystanders. He wants us to be active participants. He wants us to apply those famous quotes to the decisions we make every day. He wants us to find common ground with people who were faithful to God in those familiar stories. He wants us to take steps to avoid the fate of the people who weren’t faithful._ _The Bible contains wisdom that can be applied to practically any area of your life. The key is knowing how to make the connection. For instance, in 1 Corinthians 13:4–7, the apostle Paul writes, “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance” (NLT)._ _The way you connect these words to your life will depend on your relationship. You might resolve to learn to tolerate—or maybe even appreciate—certain quirks or habits of your spouse that try your patience. You might take steps to deal with your feelings of jealousy. You might apologize for times when you demanded your own way or brought up things your spouse did in the past._ _Maybe you’re struggling in your relationship. Maybe you and your spouse have even talked about ending it. If you turn the words of 1 Corinthians 13 into a plan of action, you might choose instead not to give up. You might ask God to strengthen your faith—in Him and in one another. You might look for signs of hope that you can build on. You might talk to a Christian counselor to find ways to endure together._ _If you study God’s Word for the purpose of doing what it says, you can change your relationship—and every other area of your life—in ways you can’t imagine._ _*Question for reflection:* How will you apply a specific passage of Scripture to your life this week?_ harvestdirect.org ____________________________ _*NEW BELIEVER'S PRAYER*_ _I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent." ~ *Luke 15:7*_ _Giving your life to Christ is the best decision of your life. Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.”* — James 1:16–17_ _In this passage, James is talking to people who were struggling with temptation. They were looking for scapegoats. Some even had the nerve to suggest that God tempted them to sin. James nips that talk in the bud with three words: “Don’t be misled.”_ _God doesn’t tempt anyone to sin. He is light; sin is darkness. The two can’t coexist. There is no dark side to Him. There’s not even a hint of a shadow._ _God created us with free will. He lets us choose whether we will obey Him or not. And He allows us to experience the consequences of our disobedience. But He doesn’t tempt us. He doesn’t try to get us to do wrong._ _In fact, He gives us every reason not to sin. He warns us in His Word about temptation. In 2 Timothy 2:22, the apostle Paul writes, “Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.”_ _God’s light exposes darkness. It shows us the ugly truth behind the attractive things that tempt us. Not only that, God gives us an escape route from every temptation we face. In 1 Corinthians 10:13, Paul writes, “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.”_ _God isn’t the tempter; He’s the Giver. He’s generous beyond belief, and His goodness is perfect. We never have to question His motives because He wants only what’s best for us—not just in the moment, but forever. And because His wisdom is as reliable as His goodness, we can trust that everything He sends our way is not just beneficial, but perfectly beneficial._ _Everything good—in this world and in your life—is a gift from God. There is certainly some truth to that cooking analogy—husbands can reach their “boiling point” before many wives have even decided what’s on the menu! Why would God make men and women this way? Don’t our different makeups set us up for conflict when our attention turns to physical intimacy?_ _I believe the Lord knew just what He was doing when He established these fundamental differences between us. After all, if women were more like men, we’d all probably spend so much time in the bedroom that we’d never get anything else done. And if men were more like women, we’d enjoy many more meaningful conversations—but the species might just disappear!_ _Our differences are what make life so interesting and invigorating. They force us to reach out, to grow, to appreciate our partner. When a husband is extroverted and the wife is introverted, the husband draws out the wife, while the wife helps the husband take time to reflect. When a wife is spontaneous and her husband is a planner, she brings energy and excitement to his life, while he adds stability to hers._ _So it is with sex. Emotional and physical differences create interest and excitement. We encourage you to celebrate them! After all, when marital partners are joined as “one flesh,” it is more than a physical union. We are merging our whole beings—body, mind, and spirit—in a wonderful and sacred encounter. This is just what your loving God intended. You can enjoy the variety that each of you brings to your marriage—no matter what you’re cooking._ ___________________________ _*’TRAIN THE CHILD THAN REPAIR A MAN’*_ _*Action Over Anger*_ _*Dr James & Shirley Dobson*_ _*”Man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.”* James 1:20_ _As a former schoolteacher, I know how important it is to practice effective discipline in the classroom and at home. One of Jim’s former teaching colleagues had no clue about effective classroom management. When her fifth-grade students got out of hand, she jumped on top of her desk and blew a whistle. The only problem was, her students loved it! They spent their days plotting how to get her back on that desk._ _Angry threats, screams, and whistles are highly inefficient forms of discipline. They actually create disrespect in the minds of kids. Would you respect a superior court judge who presided over his courtroom by waving his arms wildly, shouting out empty threats and warnings? I doubt it. And so it is in our homes. When we try to rule our families by our emotions, we find our kids manipulating us just like the class with the whistling teacher._ _Anger is ineffective in another way; it leads us to say and do things we’ll regret. Scripture repeatedly instructs us to avoid inappropriate anger: “Refrain from anger and turn from wrath” (Psalm 37:8); “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger (Ephesians 4:31); “Everyone should be…slow to become angry” (James 1:19). I’m not suggesting that you hide your feelings from your children. Sometimes your kids should know that you are upset by their actions. But when we try to control the behavior of our children through our anger, it usually ends up controlling us instead._ _How, then, should a parent respond to a son or daughter’s deliberate disobedience? With consistent disciplinary action, administered with a cool head and restrained hand. As we are reminded in Proverbs 29:11, it is the wise man—and the wise parent—who keeps himself or herself under control._ _____________________________ _*CHRISTIAN NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD*_ _*Hardline Muslims stab evangelist after widow gives her life to Christ*_ _*Morning Star News*_ _*Wednesday, February 26, 2025*_ _Robert Kasozi, a 39-year-old evangelist also known as Mulokole, was stabbed in the stomach, and three co-workers also were beaten in the attack in Kiwanga village, Goma Sub-County, Mukono District, a local source said._ _The evangelists led a 75-year-old widow identified only as Hasifa to faith in Christ in a public prayer, infuriating a relative and a shopkeeper, said an area contact whose name is withheld for security reasons._ _“A relative of Hasifa named Jawadi and a shopkeeper saw all that took place — he came out of the shop and started shouting the Islamic slogan, ‘Inna lillahi wa Inna ilayhi raji’un [Indeed to Allah we belong and to him we shall return]’ and [jihadist slogan] ‘Allah akbar [Allah is greater],’” the source told Morning Star News._ _Many Muslims gathered and started insulting the evangelists, she said._ _“A Muslim came and attacked Kasozi, piercing him in the stomach with a knife,” the source said. “While other attackers were shouting, ‘You infidels, why do you come to spread a wrong message into our city — don’t you know that this city belongs to Muslims? It's a full-scale re-telling of David's rise from an overlooked, shepherd boy to Israel's most famous king._ _Actor Michael Iskander leads the cast playing the role of David. He told CBN News how he felt about taking on such a role._ _"Scary. I mean, obviously an offer like this type of story, it's so special when everyone wants it, but it's scary because there's so much pressure being the one person to do this. I like to think that there's plenty of people who could have done it. I'm just a lucky one," he said._ _Iskander shared with CBN News his strong desire to play the role of David and what it has taught him._ _"I think it goes back to the show, The Chosen. I watch the shows. Every single time I watch an episode, I cry. I see the Bible come to life. And not only that, but I see human beings in front of me. I seen some big grand person far away. I've always been inspired by that and I've wanted to be a part of it. So, I thought to myself, man, I'd love to be in a flashback seat, maybe young King David. And that was a long time ago. That was 2021. And so to get the opportunity now to do that on full scale, deeply, the story, such a full circle movement, initial spark."_ _"David has taught me courage and bravery because the one thing that David always does is he doesn't run from his fears. He goes right to them. And I think that's a lesson we all need is to not run away from fears but face our failures. To stand up against the giant and to say, I'm here. Even though we might be scared, terrified, we still choose to stand against giants," he continued._ _The spark behind the epic series is Jon Erwin whose film credits include "Jesus Revolution" and "I Can Only Imagine," and Jon Gunn whose work includes "The Case for Christ" and "I Still Believe." Both Gunn and Erwin described how they found the balance to tell a compelling story with Biblical accuracy._ _"We feel like a great responsibility for the source material, and you want to get it right and you want to honor it. And the way to honor it is to understand the heart of it and then to fill in those gaps in ways that support the truth or the heart of it. Then you get a lot of help from people to go like, 'no, this is great, but this is actually inaccurate,'" Gunn told CBN News._ _"The Bible is kind of like you're flying through a theme park in a jet. It's a historical overview and a high altitude. So, it's wonderful to... I like Ken Burns uses this phrase 'emotional archeology,' which I really like. And to first love the material, learn the material, and then really think about okay, these are real people and if they're in chapter 3, they don't know about chapter 4. Then you read all that David was going through in the Psalms and then you cross reference them to life that he was living... and it really comes to life," Erwin said._ _Body builder, actor, and Mortal Combat star Martyn Ford brings the role of Goliath to life. He shared why Goliath's story was important._ _"I think the power of and allowing us to tell the story with the backstory allows you to see more that you don't as a human. And if we can have that relatability to the fact that he is half human, he does have a family, he has brothers, and a mother, and there's a driving force, there's a motivation for his actions."_ ___________________________ _*"Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is ruth."* John 17:17_
