South Africa has a problem with heart disease, stroke, cancer, lung problems — and diabetes. In fact, over the last 15 years, deaths from these noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) have overtaken those caused by illnesses such as HIV and tuberculosis — and in 2020, diabetes was the biggest killer in the country. Despite a target, set at the same time, to lower early deaths from NCDs by 25% by the end of 2025, no country is on course to hit that goal — including #SA. Why? In SA it’s mostly because we don’t have a grip on how many people have diabetes — which means many people live with blood sugar levels that are far too high for far too long. Find out more on what experts say the country should do to get on track. https://bhekisisa.org/health-news-south-africa/2025-02-17-why-sa-needs-to-get-a-grip-on-diabetes-fast/

When Sarah Stein wrote an op-ed for us about her experiences working in #publichealthcare, she never imagined the impact it would have. Instead of provoking muted conversation among her peers, it attracted national attention. Finance minister Enoch Godongwana mentioned Sarah by name in his budget speech, sympathising with the plight of young medics. “I got such a shock when I found out, I had no idea that it was going to happen”. Doctors say #ADHD meds rules hurt kids more than they help. Making families go to a doctor every 30 days blocks treatment. “It’s time to change that script,” psychiatrist Renata Schoeman argues. https://bhekisisa.org/opinion/2025-06-09-monthly-prescription-rule-blocks-adhd-treatment-for-sa-kids/

Ketamine clinics are on the rise in South Africa, offering a miracle cure for depression. But not all of them follow medical rules. Psychiatrists warn that some clinics offer “treatment” without proper training or supervision. ‘If we're not providing care safely, we’re being irresponsible,’ says Stellenbosch anaesthesiology professor, Sean Chetty. Watch Health Beat this Sunday at 5.30pm on eNCA as we examine the ketamine craze.

Last Wednesday, the CDC told their #Pepfar-funded projects they can restart in full — and reappoint laid off staff and hand out #PrEP, which waivers don’t allow.
