South Africa has a problem with heart disease, stroke, cancer, lung problems — and diabetes. In fact, over the last 15 years, deaths from these noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) have overtaken those caused by illnesses such as HIV and tuberculosis — and in 2020, diabetes was the biggest killer in the country. Despite a target, set at the same time, to lower early deaths from NCDs by 25% by the end of 2025, no country is on course to hit that goal — including #sa. Why? In SA it’s mostly because we don’t have a grip on how many people have diabetes — which means many people live with blood sugar levels that are far too high for far too long. Find out more on what experts say the country should do to get on track. https://bhekisisa.org/health-news-south-africa/2025-02-17-why-sa-needs-to-get-a-grip-on-diabetes-fast/
