*Cadet Mohit Knathia of GDC Kathua scales Mount Everest* *Kathua, May 18*: In a momentous achievement that has brought pride to the Government Degree College (GDC) Kathua and the 4 J\&K NCC Battalion, Cadet Mohit Knathia has successfully scaled Mount Everest, the world's highest peak at 8,848.86 meters. He reached the summit on May 18, 2025, as a member of the prestigious National Cadet Corps (NCC) Everest Expedition 2025. Cadet Knathia, representing GDC Kathua, was one of only ten cadets selected from across the nation through an intensive selection process. His remarkable endurance, commitment, and rigorous training earned him the distinction of being the sole representative from Jammu & Kashmir on this historic mission. The expedition was officially flagged off by the Raksha Mantri, Rajnath Singh, on April 3, 2025. Prior to the ascent, the team underwent exhaustive training, including a preparatory climb of Mount Abi Gamin and a winter camp at the Siachen Base Camp, under the expert guidance of the Army Mountaineering Institute. Braving extreme conditions and treacherous terrain, Cadet Mohit Knathia reached the summit and proudly unfurled the National Flag alongside the NCC Flag, embodying the spirit of courage, discipline, and patriotism. This marks the third successful Everest summit by an NCC team, following similar triumphs in 2013 and 2016. Principal, GDC Kathua Prof. Seema Mir, expressed immense pride in Mohit's accomplishment, stating, “Cadet Mohit Knathia has become a beacon of inspiration for youth across Jammu & Kashmir. His perseverance and spirit reflect the core values of the NCC and our institution.” She also commended Lt. (Dr.) Daya Ram, Associate NCC Officer at GDC Kathua, for his unwavering guidance and mentorship that significantly contributed to this success. The college also extended sincere gratitude to Col. Kuldeep Kachroo and Subedar Shyam Chand, Training JCO of the 4 J\&K NCC Battalion, for their instrumental role in shaping Cadet Mohit’s journey through their intensive training and support.

*DC Kathua Chairs DAC Meeting on PCPNDT Act* *Kathua records 936 CSR at birth ,surpassing National average* Kathua, May 16: Deputy Commissioner Kathua, Dr. Rakesh Minhas, chaired the District Advisory Committee (DAC) meeting on the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act at the conference hall of the DC Office Complex. The meeting focused on evaluating the implementation of the PCPNDT Act across the district, with detailed discussions on the registration of ultrasound centres, legal provisions concerning offences and penalties, and the district’s monitoring mechanisms. At the outset, Dr. Minhas appreciated the collective efforts of all stakeholders for their role in improving the Child Sex Ratio (CSR) at birth, which has now reached 936—surpassing both State and the national average. He acknowledged the positive trend as a significant achievement for the district and emphasized the need to sustain and build upon this momentum. He further stated that collective and targeted efforts are required to elevate the Child Sex Ratio in health blocks where the CSR at birth remains comparatively low. “We must identify these areas and intensify awareness, enforcement, and community engagement to ensure equitable progress across all blocks,” he added. Earlier, Chief Medical Officer Kathua, Dr. Vijay Raina, briefed the committee on the status of 16 ultrasound clinics in the district, including 13 private centres and 3 government-run facilities. Dr. Minhas highlighted the vital role of the PCPNDT Act in safeguarding the girl child and called for strict enforcement through regular and random inspections of ultrasound clinics. He also emphasized the need for innovative strategies, including decoy operations, to curb illegal sex determination practices and further improve the CSR in the district. The DAC approved the registration of a new private ultrasound centre coming up near Dreamland Park in Kathua. Besides, the meeting also accorded approval for the renewal of the registration of three private Ultrasound centres. The meeting was attended by Medical Superintendent Dr. Sangeeta Ajrawat, along with other DAC members and special invitees.
