If you live or work in Aldermaston or Burghfield, you probably know that there are Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) sites in your locality. Should there be an emergency at either of the sites, it’s important people in the local area can be easily contacted. The quickest and most effective way to do this is through AWE’s new emergency text alert system. Find out more or sign up here: https://www.westberks.gov.uk/awe-text-alert

Throughout the year we're out and about improving our roads. From fixing potholes, resurfacing roads, and making sure our drains flow well, the work we do helps keep you on the move. Last month we fixed 367 potholes, resurfaced 1.545km of road and cleared 1,899 gullies, as well as undertaking other maintenance. We want to deliver services to be proud of - and you can help. If you spot a pothole, or see something else which needs fixing, you can tell us here: https://www.westberks.gov.uk/reportaproblem

Change is coming to the way councils work across the country, and we are taking the opportunity to make sure it’s done in a way that truly benefits our communities. Our proposal is to solve the government’s request by creating two brand new unitary councils that cover Oxfordshire and West Berkshire: ▪️ Ridgeway Council – covering South Oxfordshire, Vale of White Horse, and West Berkshire ▪️ Oxford and Shires Council – covering Cherwell, Oxford City, and West Oxfordshire We want to hear what you think so that residents and businesses stay at the heart of these new councils. This is your chance to influence how future services are shaped and delivered in our area. Have your say here: https://twocouncils.org/get-involved

We've received a number of reports of residents receiving texts about fake Penalty Charge Notices. Please be advised that West Berkshire Council would not send a text message regarding outstanding Penalty Charge Notices. Should you receive a text regarding this, be aware that it is a scam and delete/block the number.

This week is Carers Week! Many caring today wouldn’t identify as being carers, but their care counts. They are often faced with real practical, emotional and financial challenges because they are taking time to care for a family member or friend. By helping someone in your community register as an unpaid carer and get the right support, you’ll be making a real difference. This could be help with wellbeing, assessments, breaks, rights at work, flu jabs, financial aid and protection from discrimination. Everyone’s situation is different, and we can offer tailored support to ease pressures and worries. For more information, email [email protected] or call 01635 503050 Also, don't forget about the activities and events we have planned for this week: https://directory.westberks.gov.uk/directory-search/details/?id=22cf9f09-1071-47bf-b14f-b2df010081dc

Last week we launched our brand new Let’s Talk Community Outreach service! The Let’s Talk West Berkshire hub is all about bringing support closer to you. Whether you need help filling in forms, using technology, finding the right services, or just want a friendly chat, we’re here for you! We've already been out and about across the district, but you can also catch us at these local spots serving as one-stop shops for support and information: Today (Wednesday 28 May) – Newbury Library (12:30-2:30pm) Thursday 29 May – Pangbourne Library (9:30am–12pm) Friday 30 May – Thatcham Market (10:30am–1:30pm – look for the West Berkshire gazebo)

Starting today (19 May), Newbury’s pedestrianisation hours along Northbrook Street, Bridge Street, Bartholomew Street (north), Mansion House Street, Wharf Street, and Market Place will be extended until later in the evening from 10am to 11pm (currently 10am – 5pm) as a trial under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order. We're aiming for pedestrianisation to: ▪️ boost local business for events and outdoor dining, ▪️ improve safety, ▪️ and create a cleaner, more vibrant town centre. Read more and tell us what you think of the trial once you’ve had time to experience it here: https://www.westberks.gov.uk/newbury-town-centre-pedestrianisation
