AIR QUALITY UPDATE FOR THE VIRGIN ISLANDS Monday, June 2, 2025 Issued : 6:45 am The latest satellite images and ground observations indicate that a significant plume of Sahara dust has drifted over the region. This dust, originating from the Sahara Desert, can impact air quality and visibility. Key Implications of Prolonged Exposure: • Respiratory irritation (e.g., coughing, sore throat) • Allergic reactions and asthma exacerbation • Eye and skin irritation At-Risk Groups: • Children and the elderly • People with asthma or other respiratory conditions • Pregnant women Tips to Stay Safe: ✅ Limit outdoor activities, especially during peak dust hours. ✅ Use face masks or scarves to cover your nose and mouth. ✅ Keep windows and doors closed. ✅ Use air purifiers or ensure your air conditioning has a clean filter. ✅ Stay hydrated and wash your face/eyes frequently. However, by tonight, moisture and instability associated with a weak trough will move into the area, heightening the chances for shower activity across the region. Weather today: Partly sunny skies in general with a 40 percent or moderate chance of a brief passing morning shower. Weather tonight: Partly cloudy skies, with periods of increased cloudiness and a 70 percent or high chance of overnight showers, mainly after midnight. Winds: East-southeast at 15 to 26 km/h or 9 to 16 mph, with lighter spells overnight. Seas: 1.5 to 2.1 meters or 5 to 7 feet. Therefore, small craft operators should continue to exercise caution.
