The Rs. 12 lakh tax exemption applies only if your income is below Rs. 12 lakh. With the Rs. 75,000 standard deduction, the threshold becomes Rs. 12.75 lakh. If your income exceeds Rs. 12.75 lakh, tax applies from Rs. 4 lakh onwards.
