A Copa Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 flying from Panama City (PTY) to Guayaquil (GYE) in Ecuador had to wait in the air before landing because of heavy rain at Guayaquil Airport. This waiting process is called a holding pattern, where a plane flies in a loop near the airport until it gets clearance to land. While the aircraft was circling, someone on the ground pointed a laser at it for almost 20 minutes. Shining a laser at an airplane is extremely dangerous because the bright light can temporarily blind the pilots, putting the safety of the flight at risk. In the United States, pointing a laser at an aircraft is a serious crime under the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 (Public Law 112-95, Section 311). Anyone caught doing this can face fines of up to $11,000 per incident, and if they do it multiple times, the total fine can reach $30,800.
